foreign rights spring 08 memoir/biography Hans-Peter Schwarz Axel Springer The Biography He was Germany’s most successful newspaper publisher. He founded one of the largest media empires in Europe. He was a political visionary who steadfastly believed that Germany would be reunified one day. When his papers, with the BILD-Zeitung taking the lead, took a firm line against the student riots of ’68, he and his group became the target of a nationwide campaign including bomb attacks. Without question Axel Springer divided opinions: while to some he was a beacon of conservative values, to others he was a reactionary hate figure. Hans-Peter Schwarz is the first biographer to be have been granted free access to the archives of the Springer publishing house, including the private papers of the publisher who passed away in 1985. For the very first time it is possible to assess the “mammoth publisher”, as he ironically referred to himself, from a knowledgeable and critical perspective. Hans-Peter Schwarz, born in 1934, was Professor of Political Science and Contemporary History at Bonn University up until his retirement. He was the chairman of the executive board of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) for many years. He has written numerous books on contemporary German history, among others the definitive biography on Konrad Adenauer.
