The Broccoli-Factor
A Small Lexicon of Modern Medicine
Fitness and health in the 21 st century – the latest in medical know-how
Every day doctors all over the world make fresh discoveries – medicines and methods of treatment that are
meant to improve our quality of life and keep us healthy. Were you aware that chocolate can help prevent cardiovascular
diseases? That broccoli can be used to treat certain types of cancer and even prevent a recurrence?
Do you know why coffee is the latest health-drink? In an informative and entertaining manner Hartmut
Wewetzer reports on the latest findings in medicinal research.
Hartmut Wewetzer, born in 1961, studied medicine in Berlin and contributed to various medical
journals and daily newspapers. After graduating, he joined the Tagesspiegel, where he has been head of the
science section since 1995. He has a particular interest in the field of medicine and genetic engineering. In
1998 he was awarded the Georg-von-Holtzbrinck-Prize for science journalism.
Sex – Don’t Kick the Habit!
How Women Can Get More Out of Sex
No sex in the city?
You probably know the scenario. The washing machine has flooded, the kids are fighting, your husband forgot
to do the shopping, and you still need to go through your lecture notes … You flop into bed exhausted.
And now sex as well? No thanks, no desire whatsoever…
There’s a broad spectrum of passion-killers: the stress of daily life, arguments with your partner, psychological
problems, and medication or physical conditions being the most common causes. But there’s no need for
women to accept these assaults on their libido or to let them spoil their fun. With candour and sensitivity,
as well as the odd witty aside thrown in for good measure, the knowledgeable team of authors encourages
women to take a close look at their sex-lives and perhaps explore new avenues. So that for women sex can
become the most wonderful source of enjoyment in the world once again.
Birgit Frohn, a biologist and science journalist, has written several books on medicine, nutrition, alternative
medicine and psychology.
Claudia Praxmayer, a biologist, has spent 12 years working as a public relations consultant in the field
of medicine, pharmacology and health.
Johann Sievers, a gynaecologist and specialist in sexual health, runs the first gynaecological practice
to focus on women’s sexual disorders in Hamburg.
