Cologne, just after midnight. A deserted urban railway station. A driver – stabbed to death. Soon
after, a young woman is discovered nearby, unconscious; she had evidently been coerced into prostitution.
During long, abnormally warm January nights Judith Krieger and her colleague Manni
Korzilius try to make sense of these events. With great psychological insight, Gisa Klönne’s third
novel transports us to a nightmarish world where violence against women is commonplace.
It is a wet night when Judith Krieger is called to the scene of a murder: the driver of an urban
train is lying next to his train; he has been stabbed to death. Her search for evidence or witnesses
produces nothing whatsoever. Moreover, she’s worried about a young woman. She was found
lying near the railway line and is in a coma. Who is she? The victim of human traffickers, a prostitute?
Is she from Eastern Europe? What happened to her?
When Judith pursues her investigations with Manni Korzilius in the red light district, unresolved
conflicts come to the surface: from her past, when, as a student, she worked in a women’s refuge.
Deeply engrained beliefs, her own fears. And while Manni is increasingly perplexed by Judith’s
behaviour, someone else has sensed her fragility: someone who tortures women and doesn’t shy
away from murder. Someone who will become extremely dangerous for Judith.
Gisa Klönne, born in 1964, has an MA in English language and literature. She is a writer
and journalist and also lectures in creative writing and journalism. Her debut novel Der Wald ist
Schweigen (Silent Is the Forest) was a great hit with the media as well as the public. With her second
novel featuring Detective Judith Krieger, Unter dem Eis (Under the Ice), she attracted an even wider
fan base. Both novels are currently being translated into several languages. Gisa Klönne lives in
Cologne. www.gisa-kloenne.de
Renate Kampmann
The Pain of Others
The pathologist Leonie Simon fears for her life: the Gotthardts, a married couple she worked
with following the 2004 Tsunami, has been killed. This prompts old memories of Khao Lak and
the brutal murder of a German doctor to resurface. Could the motivation be the same? And will
Leonie be the next victim?
Dr. Frank Gotthardt and his wife have perished in a fire which engulfed their villa in Berlin.
There is no evidence to suggest a crime has been committed and the police are working on the
assumption that it was suicide. But Leonie Simon, a pathologist at the Berlin Charité hospital, has
her own suspicions. Three years ago, in December 2004, she was in Khao Lak with the Gotthardts,
helping to identify the victims of the Tsunami. The memories still haunt her, particularly the shocking
discovery that not everyone was helping out of a sense of compassion and social responsibility.
When a dentist, who had identified several German victims, is found murdered with evidence
of torture, Leonie decides to carry out her own investigation.
Renate Kampmann, born in 1953, studied German and history; she worked as a theatrical
assistant in Bochum, then as a journalist, radio-play editor and TV-producer in Hamburg.
Petra Durst-Benning
The Flower Oracle
2 million copies of
Petra Durst-Benning’s
historical novels sold!
Baden-Baden, 1871
The great new historical novel by Petra Durst-Benning
The setting is Baden-Baden as the 19th century draws to a close. Ever since she managed to make
her family’s floristry business flourish once more, Flora has been living out her dream. The elegant
clientele who comes from all over the world is delighted with her tasteful flower arrangements.
But Flora tempts providence when she falls madly in love.
In 1871 the great concern in Baden-Baden is whether Europe’s “summer capital” will be able
to recover its former splendour after the war. It is in the midst of all this upheaval that young
Flora, the daughter of seed merchant Hannah Kerner, arrives in the town. For her it is a dream
come true, as she has been taken on as an apprentice in a small flower shop belonging to the
Sonnenschein family. With her cheerful and warm-hearted disposition she has soon won a place
in the family’s affections, and particularly in those of their son Friedrich; and her new ideas breathe
life into the fusty old shop. Before long she becomes Friedrich’s wife and serves the elegant
clients, including members of Europe’s aristocracy. But with success comes discord, the couple no
longer sees eye to eye, and Flora begins to yearn for real passion. She’s playing a dangerous game,
all in the pursuit of happiness.
Petra Durst-Benning, born in 1965, lives just south of Stuttgart with her husband and
their dog. Her historical novels made her into a best-selling author; her greatest successes to date
are The Glass Blower, The American Lady, Paradise of Glass, The Lady Confectioner, and the novel The
Seed Merchant, which describes the love story of Flora’s parents.
Revolution and Crab Lice
Lice don’t care about the revolution
The GDR, “the first time”, or the cup final between FC Union Berlin and Carl Zeiss Jena in 1968 – everything
comes to an end at some point and is relegated to a distant memory. Torsten Schulz writes about the
conditions, emotions and events that were once considered revolutionary and which must now be passed on
to the next generation.
What do you do if your ‘first time’ was with a Vietnamese prostitute and you fell in love with her afterwards?
What do you do about the crab lice giving you an itch down there? What do you do if this woman seems
to have vanished into thin air? The revolution comes from the East, at least as far as Thomas is concerned.
Whereas his beloved Nicole has hooked up with some American guy who looks like an elderly version of
Che Guevara. Memories of a time when people hoped to rock the world to its very foundations through sex
and politics. But, instead, it changed literally of its own accord. So, for instance, in the 50’s the narrator’s father
used to hang around with his mates by a fire alarm on the street outside a pub in East Berlin because the
owner refused to let the youngsters inside. In the 90’s the Fire Alarm is a trendy bar. One of many memories
that have been transformed into extraordinary stories rich in ambiguity.
Torsten Schulz, born in 1959 in East Berlin, is professor of applied performing arts at the Film &
Television Academy (HFF) at Babelsberg. He has written the scripts of several films that have won international
awards and has directed a number of documentaries. 2004 saw the appearance of his debut novel
Boxhagen Square; a version as a radio play has won numerous prizes.
Frank Ochmann
Emotional Ethics
Why We Distinguish Good from Evil
The new definition of good and evil
Recent neurobiological research has made a striking discovery of far-reaching social significance:
Moral action is not a product of reason, but part of evolution. There is no such thing as universal
morality. But if that is the case, on what are our values based?
Ever since Freud we have known that the subconscious has a significant impact on our actions.
Current neurological research has prompted a revolution similar to that triggered by Copernicus.
Everything we do or don’t do is determined by complex processes in the brain before entering
our consciousness. We judge and act based on our feelings, which are explained and justified in
retrospect, if at all, by our sense of reason. By a process of continuous interaction with our biological
nature, our cultural conditioning guides us either towards good or evil. But what does that
mean for our value system and our sense of right and wrong?
Referring to the latest research findings, Frank Ochmann explores the crisis neurobiology has
created in the field of morality and its significance for philosophy and religion. He shows the
risks society faces when its moral fabric collapses, and discusses what foundations are required to
underpin our system of values in order to avert this danger.
Frank Ochmann was born in Marl, Germany, in 1956. After obtaining his doctorate in physics
he turned his attention to theology and was ordained as a priest in Muenster. As a journalist
he now combines his interests in natural sciences and the humanities; he has been writing for
Stern magazine for many years.
the evidence for an ethics grounded in biology.”
The Bio-Pirates
Billion-Dollar Business Exploiting Nature’s Blueprint
Boris Grundl
Get Up!
Confessions of an Optimist
The plundering of nature and knowledge by international corporations
Pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies are constantly on the look-out for new effective substances. Their
billion-dollar businesses are increasingly based on products found in the tropics and the jungle. Western
corporations are exploiting the know-how of indigenous peoples, patenting the “genetic green gold”, and
securing exclusive exploitation rights on these resources for themselves. With a single cancer drug, derived
from the active ingredients of a tropical plant, a major American pharmaceutical company netted 88 million
dollars clear profit in a single year. The countries of origin were left empty-handed – a clear case of bio-piracy.
Using concrete examples, the authors expose the exploitation of third world countries by pharmaceutical
multinationals.
The Goulash-Girl
Hungary for Beginners
“I can count from one to ten in Hungarian and say hello, and I know what ‘Cheers’ means. That’s all I need to know.
Or, so I thought.”
The fact that she ends up working as a trainee in the editorial office of a paper in Budapest is something that
25-year-old Lynn accepts quite philosophically. Hungarian can’t be that hard, surely. Big mistake! But she
sticks it out and learns all sorts of fascinating things: that Hungarians really do eat goulash but refer to it as
“Oh, you’re so lucky …” is the general reaction from their friends when they hear that the Ulrich family’s
dream of la dolce vita in bella Italia has finally come true. But life in the Eternal City proves anything
but “dolce”: on their arrival, their flat is in a state of utter chaos and the landlord mistakes their daughter
Franziska’s guinea-pig for a rat. Essential information for these newcomers to Rome: a palazzo is just a very
ordinary house subdivided into flats, children’s birthday parties in Rome are something else entirely, and
Italians complain constantly about the weather, even when the sun is blazing down from a clear blue sky.
Still, the Ulrichs are determined to make the best of it. And finally they discover that life there can indeed
be sweet after all.
Stefan Ulrich, born in 1963, studied law and went on to work as an editor in the news and foreign
affairs office of the Süddeutsche Zeitung. In August 2005 he moved with his family from Munich to Rome,
from where he reports on life in the Eternal City, Italy and the Vatican.
Martina Wimmer
Men
The Return of a Redundant Species
A double-edged declaration of love to all husbands, colleagues, mates and mechanics. Because
they tend to have firmer buttocks than us and always have to pretend to be the superior in every
way. Martina Wimmer approaches the never-ending task of researching the male of the species
with friendly concern – but not without taking a secret delight in twisting the knife where sensitive
subjects are concerned.
Men – poor darlings! Defied, dragooned, derided, deceived. Fighting a losing battle on the equal
opportunities front, confused, not knowing which way to turn, caught midway between machohood
and mousedom. So a review of male idiosyncrasies based on female field research is long
overdue. The author interweaves her personal experience and observations with factual information,
images of men in the media, and statistical investigations. A book about men viewed from a
female perspective, avoiding any clichés or one-upmanship.
Martina Wimmer, born in 1965, is a journalist who lives in Berlin. She writes features and
profiles for magazines such as Brigitte, Geo Saison, and Merian. Her books Der Bettseller (The Bed
Seller) and Champagner für Alle (Champagne for Everyone!), which capture the essence of her adolescent
years in book form, were published by Marion von Schröder.
Eliette von Karajan
My Life at His Side
Autobiography
Eliette Mouet was eighteen years old when she first met Herbert von Karajan. After their wedding
he was appointed artistic director of the Vienna State Opera; he was already director of
the Salzburg Festival and chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The couple’s
initial meeting had been in Saint Tropez, followed by another in London, where the young
Frenchwoman was taking language classes and attending an art school. From this time until his
death in 1989 she was the love of his life. At his side Eliette von Karajan immersed herself in the
world of music. She accompanied the great maestro on his tours, enjoyed a life jet-setting round
the world in the circle of his friends and admirers, protecting him from the public when necessary
and, over the years, became a public institution in her own right.
For the first time ever and to mark the occasion of Herbert von Karajan’s hundredth birthday,
Eliette von Karajan breaks her silence and gives a first-hand account of her life at his side. Though
she paints a vivid picture of the brilliant musician, whose pronounced perfectionism had a major
influence on the world of music in the 20 th century, her emphasis is on Herbert von Karajan as
a person. Her love and respect for her husband remain the focus of her life even today, almost
twenty years after his death.
Eliette von Karajan grew up in Nice, France. After a brief spell modelling for Christian
Dior and other designers she attended painting classes at a London art school. She married
Herbert von Karajan in 1958 and they had two daughters. Since Karajan’s death in 1989, Eliette
von Karajan has been the honorary director of the Salzburg Festival, which was the project closest
to her husband’s heart. On her initiative, the Herbert von Karajan Centre was built opposite the
State Opera House in Vienna to house archives containing all his audio and video recordings.
Wolfgang Stresemann
“A Most Peculiar Man… ”
My Memories of Herbert von Karajan
As director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Wolfgang Stresemann worked closely with Herbert von
Karajan for many years. In his recollections he examines the personality and artistic work of the man who is
arguably the most important conductor of the 20 th century; he also describes the tensions and conflicts that
existed between the maestro and his orchestra – as they were experienced at first hand during many years
of close collaboration.
Kirsten Jüngling
Nelly Mann: “I’m Not All Bad”
The Biography
“Frau Kröger tells stories that have a curious ring of truth.” Heinrich Mann
She was the disgrace of the Mann family; while Thomas called her “the terrible trollop”, to Katia she was
simply “the creature”. She came from the humblest of backgrounds – her mother was a servant, and her
father’s identity was unknown – and managed to scrape together a living working in a seedy bar in Berlin. It
was in this milieu that Heinrich Mann, thirty years her senior, came to know and fall in love with her in 1929.
She became his companion and remained with him until she committed suicide in 1944. Initially they lived
in exile in the South of France, where they married in 1939, then in California, in the same neighbourhood
as Heinrich’s reclusive brother and fellow-writer.
Virtually every member of the Mann family has been the subject of a biography, with the exception of Nelly,
Heinrich’s disreputable wife. Kirsten Jüngling, who has been writing highly-esteemed biographies for many
years, including one of Katia, Nelly’s diametrically opposed counterpart, has broken the family taboo. With
considerable empathy and little respect for the Manns’ mythological status, she describes the life of Emmy
Johanna Westphal, who became Kröger following her adoption, tracing the path of one who was dealt a cruel
hand by fate and ended up taking a seat beside the famous author. Ultimately the constant strain of trying
to live up to her own expectations, let alone those of her brother-in-law and the rest of the clan, was too
much for Nelly to bear and she cracked under the pressure. In a deeply moving account, this long overdue
biography traces her escape from roles she despised, from Germany, from France, and the refuge she sought
in alcohol and drugs, and, finally, suicide.
Hans-Peter Schwarz
Axel Springer
The Biography
He was Germany’s most successful newspaper publisher. He founded one of the largest media
empires in Europe. He was a political visionary who steadfastly believed that Germany would
be reunified one day. When his papers, with the BILD-Zeitung taking the lead, took a firm line
against the student riots of ’68, he and his group became the target of a nationwide campaign
including bomb attacks. Without question Axel Springer divided opinions: while to some he was
a beacon of conservative values, to others he was a reactionary hate figure.
Hans-Peter Schwarz is the first biographer to be have been granted free access to the archives of
the Springer publishing house, including the private papers of the publisher who passed away in
1985. For the very first time it is possible to assess the “mammoth publisher”, as he ironically referred
to himself, from a knowledgeable and critical perspective. Whether it is his meteoric ascent
from the rubble and ruins of the Second World War or his sensational meeting with Khrushchev
in Moscow, his plan to sell his papers at the height of the ’68 revolt, or his extremely turbulent
private life, which included 5 wives and countless mistresses and courtesans – Springer’s life is the
stuff of which great biographies are made.
Hans-Peter Schwarz, born in 1934, was Professor of Political Science and Contemporary
History at Bonn University up until his retirement. He was the chairman of the executive board
of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) for many years. He has written numerous
books on contemporary German history, among others the definitive biography on Konrad
Adenauer.
Boris Reitschuster
The New Ruler of the Kremlin
Frank Sieren
The China Shock
How Beijing is Conquering the World
The first biography of the new Russian president
At the beginning of March 2008 Russia’s new president will be elected. According to the Russian constitution
Vladimir Putin is precluded from running for a third term. But there is no doubt that in Russia’s ‘controlled
democracy’ Putin’s successor will have to be one of his close associates. In an informative and lively
manner Boris Reitschuster, a renowned expert on Russia, profiles the new master of the Kremlin: will he
increase the power of the secret service still further and maintain the current president’s grip on power? Or
will he break away from his predecessor’s political legacy and pursue another course entirely? In this highly
topical biography, Reitschuster describes the new Russian president’s career to date, as well as his network of
associates, indicating the political direction the West can expect Russia to take in the years to come.
Boris Reitschuster, born in 1971, developed an interest in Russia as a teenager. He has worked as an
interpreter and translator, and as the editor of various German newspapers, including the AFP and German
news agency dpa. He was appointed director of the Moscow office of Focus in 1999. In 2006 his book Putin’s
Democracy was published by Econ.
The Chinese Century has already begun
China is in the process of turning the world upside-down. To keep the Chinese economy booming, raw
materials are urgently required. Money is no object as lucrative trade deals have landed China with foreign
currency reserves worth over 1000 billion US dollars, allowing China to outbid its western rivals. But the
acquisition of raw materials goes hand in hand with political strategy and China is using valuable trade contracts
to secure the support of states in Central Asia, the Near East and Africa, thereby diminishing western
influence in these regions. At the same time the gulf between rich and poor is narrowing: never before have
so many people risen from poverty in such a short space of time.
What we are seeing in China is the beginning of a new global trend. For the first time in history the West
has a serious rival – and that alters everything, not least our economic power, political clout and sense of
identity in the world.
Frank Sieren, born in 1967, is a “foremost expert on China” (Die Zeit) and China correspondent for
various newspapers and journals including WirtschaftsWoche, Capital and Vanity Fair. He has lived in Beijing
since 1994. He is the author of the bestseller The China Code: What’s Left for Us (Econ, 2005) and China:
Stalin’s Plans to Wage War Against the West
What were they really like, the rulers of the Vatican? The book accompanying the television series reveals
hitherto unknown aspects of Christ’s representatives on earth. It shows them not only as power politicians
and warlords, but also as family men and passionate lovers – of the arts and sciences.
The history of Christ’s representatives is synonymous with the history of the Western world. The book covers
a vast expanse of time from the legendary beginnings of the papacy to its establishment at the heart of the
Western world. The struggle for power between emperors, kings and popes is described in detail – from the
humble pilgrimage to Canossa, covering the dramatic pillaging of Rome by German mercenaries, all the way
to the triumphant construction of St. Peter’s Basilica. The authors present the latest findings of archaeological
research on the legendary St. Peters sepulchre. With the skills of a detective they explain the role Pope Sixtus
IV played in the conspiracy to murder Lorenzo Medici. They enable us to experience at first-hand Leo X’s
machinations following Luther’s denunciation of the papacy. The players of the Holy See appear as people of
flesh and blood, who have to strike a balance between their spiritual vocation and their secular legacy.
Hans-Christian Huf has created numerous prime-time series for ZDF German public television.
The tie-in books have all become bestsellers. His most recent publications at Econ are Mit Gottes Segen in
die Hölle? Der Dreißigjährige Krieg (Into Hell with God’s Blessing? The Thirty-Year War) and Vom Aufstieg und Fall
großer Reiche (The Rise and Fall of Great Empires).
“If it is the will of the Party, we shall conquer Berlin.” General Wassili Tshujkov in November 1939
Hitler’s campaign against the Soviet Union was not intended to be a pre-emptive strike, as Goebbels claimed
in his propaganda and as is often alleged even now. In point of fact it was a war of aggression par excellence.
But it is equally true that from the 1920’s onwards, the Soviet Union was, under Stalin, pursuing a policy of
military expansion on an immense scale, and this was intensified still further in the ‘30s as they prepared to
wage war against Western Europe. Such plans were concealed by the state propaganda images of the USSR
as the “peace-loving” fatherland of the workers.
What went on within the walls of the Kremlin during those turbulent years has remained largely unexplored
by historians until now. Bogdan Musial is one of the few western historians to have had largely unrestricted
access to the archives in Moscow. He is the first to analyse systematically the relevant records and special
files of the Soviet regime, in particular those of the polit bureau and the highly secret defence committee.
He provides conclusive evidence that the Party and the military leadership were manifestly planning a major
offensive against the West. For the first time ever, the brutal campaigns of industrialisation and the Stalinist
terror of the ‘30s, which resulted in the loss of millions of lives, are placed in context and shown to be directly
connected to the plans to wage war. Musial’s book sheds new light on the background to the Second World
War, which can only now be recounted in full.
Bogdan Musial was born in 1960 in southern Poland. In 1985 he was granted political asylum in
Germany. He studied history, political science and sociology in Hanover and Manchester. From 1999 to 2004
he was a research assistant at the Warsaw Institute of National Remembrance (IPN).
Consumers – Conned Again
Neuro-Marketing – Messing With Our Minds
We are exposed to a constant stream of ambient music, a haze of fragrances, and the synthetic
aroma of freshly baked ‘pizza’ – the advertising industry ruthlessly exploits the latest findings in
neuroscientific research in order to manipulate us and influence our buying behaviour. If we think
we are making a conscious decision, we are deluding ourselves: 95 percent of our purchasing
decisions are made at a subconscious level, triggered by our emotions. Neuro-marketing is the
name of the latest technique used to persuade consumers, using a frontal attack on all our senses
to appeal directly to the emotional centre in the brain.
The consumer researcher Werner Warmbier explains the relevant insights gained from neuroscience
and the physiology of the senses. He presents numerous examples to illustrate the subtle
and insidious ways the marketing industry has devised to exploit this knowledge, as well as
demonstrating how consumers can escape this constant onslaught on their senses.
Werner Warmbier is an authority on consumer-based marketing, and environmental and
And now sex as well? No thanks, no desire whatsoever…
There’s a broad spectrum of passion-killers: the stress of daily life, arguments with your partner, psychological
problems, and medication or physical conditions being the most common causes. But there’s no need for
women to accept these assaults on their libido or to let them spoil their fun. With candour and sensitivity,
as well as the odd witty aside thrown in for good measure, the knowledgeable team of authors encourages
women to take a close look at their sex-lives and perhaps explore new avenues. So that for women sex can
The Garden of the Druids
The Celtic Healers Secret Knowledge of Herbs
The sources and uses of Celtic herbal lore in a comprehensive account of the principles of the Druid art of
healing based on authentic historical sources.
Based on many decades of research by the Breton doctor and druid Le Scouëzec, this book introduces us to the
Celtic belief system and world view, explains the culture and the teachings of historical druidhood, and reveals the
sources of Celtic herbal remedies, which can be used to this day. The Druid medicinal herbs, how to cultivate and
prepare them today, as well as their many applications are described in detail. An appendix explains the vital role
played by medicinal herbs in Celtic seasonal celebrations and the Druid moon-calendar.
After completing her PhD, Dr. Claudia Urbanovsky spent several years working in industry and
for international organizations. Today she lives on her farm in Normandy, where she grows medicinal herbs
organically and passes on her knowledge of their healing powers. Her book was written in close collaboration
with Dr.Gwenc’hlan Le Scouëzec, a physician and authority on the Celts, who wrote the first scientific study
of Druid cures, assessing them from a medical perspective.
Gwenc’hlan Le Scouëzec has been the 5 th Archdruid of modern-day Brittany since 1980. The
“Brotherhood of Druids, Bards and Ovates”, the Breton “Gorsedd”, represents traditional druidhood in its
