SWIMMING LESSONS (ZWEMLESSEN)
In the Netherlands most children learn to swim when they turn 5 or 6 and they can pass 3
certificates, Swim ABC, which include diploma A, B and C. Children are not allowed to swim in
a public pool without some sort of floatation device unless they have achieved the minimum
qualification, the A Diploma.
Maastricht has two indoor pools, De Dousberg (Dousbergweg 10) and Zwembad Heer (Laan in
den Drink 8). These swimming pools will be replaced by a new swimming pool "zwembad
Geusseltbad" near the new UWC Campus and should open sometime in 2012.
The Maastricht swimming pools and Sports & Recreation Centre Polfermolen (Plenkertstraat 50,
6301 GM Valkenburg), Mosaqua (Landsraderweg 11, 6271 NT Gulpen), swimming pool De
Otterveurdt Hoensbroek (Gravin van Schonbornlaan 2, 6442 AX Hoensbroek) and Sauna Vilt
(Rijksweg 164, 6325 AH Berg & Terblijt) do offer swimming lessons too. Several UWC children
follow lessons (in English) at Sauna Vilt. Also, zwemschool Aquarijntje is another swim school
where children have the option to be taught in English and can have private lessons. They
practice in swimming pools all over town, incl. the indoor pool at Cortile Ceramique.
TAKE-AWAY MEALS (AFHAAL- EN THUISBEZORGMAALTIJDEN)
Several Maastricht restaurants do offer take-away meals. You can either ring, place an order
and collect meal at a certain time or have it home delivered. Through "thuisbezorgd" and "thuis
uiteten gids" you can check to see which restaurants do home deliveries in your area. Also,
Thai take-away Maastricht has an outlet at Emmaplein and one in Heer district. An UWC family
can recommend www.justeat.nl which is a website of restaurants that also do home deliveries.
TAXI (TAXI)
Taxis are expensive and not allowed to pick up people on the street except by reservation or at
a taxi rank. There are taxi ranks at the main railway station, the Markt and at the Vrijthof. Look
for the 'standplaats taxis' sign. The taxi sector has been decentralised, although there are still
main taxi organisations (Taxi Centrale). 'Official' taxis have a blue number plate. For

From some train stations “treintaxis” operate, these are shared taxis that shuttle people back
and forth to the station for a fixed fee per ride (EUR 4.30 each or six for the cost of five in the
automatic ticket machines). Tickets can be purchased from the ticket counter or machine in any
NS station. You will pay more if you buy tickets from the driver.
