HRM to recognize military community volunteers
By LCdr Pat Jessup
CFB Halifax Community
Relations Officer
On June 3, 1992, Her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth
II sanctioned the modern
version of Mention in Dispatches
(MID) to recognize
valiant conduct, devotion to
duty or other distinguished
service while in combat
or near-combat conditions.
Recipients wear a bronze oak
leaf on the appropriate campaign
or service medal ribbon.
In February 2009 and in
conjunction with the Canadian
Naval Centennial, His
Worship Mayor Peter Kelly
of Halifax Regional Municipality
(HRM) initiated a project
to recognize the significant
contribution that volunteers
within the military family
make to the HRM. “Volunteers
from the Canadian
Forces are our unsung heroes
and form the backbone of
a multitude of community
activities. I believe that their
contribution to the wellbeing
of the HRM should be formally
recognized and the
Navy’s centennial is the perfect
time to do this.” Mayor
Kelly decided that the city’s
appreciation be in the form of
a lapel pin consisting of a
naval crown superimposed
on an silver oak leaf and
asked the Nova Scotia College
of Art and Design University
(NSCADU) to develop
the concept. Bridget Turner,
a recent NSCADU graduate in
Jewellery Design and Metalsmithing
was the winner.
Turner said she is honoured
to have won the commission
and to be part of recognition
of “something extraordinary.”
What is truly extraordinary
is she is part of the military
family with her brother
Gunner Barton James (BJ)
Turner, a member of 1st Field
Artillery Regiment (RCA).
Mayor Peter Kelly congratulates Bridget Turner, who won the design competition at NSCADU.
She said Gunner Turner has
set the standard for her. “BJ
has a strong motivation to
serve and I am proud to play
a small role by designing this
special memento of community
service.”
The Mayor’s Pin will recognize
community service
and will be awarded to members
of the military family,
DND employees and retirees
who complete 100 hours of
community service during the
Navy's centennial year. The
LCDR PAT JESSUP, CFB HALIFAX COMMUNITY RELATIONS OFFICER
project will be coordinated
through the Military Family
Resource Centre (MFRC).
Colleen Calvert, Executive
Director of the Halifax and
region MFRC, is delighted
with the project. “The defence
team and their families make
significant sacrifices and contributions
on behalf of our
nation and also make a huge
difference right here in HRM
by volunteering countless
hours as coaches, at charities
and at schools etc. This civic
recognition from the HRM is a
great honour.”
Jill Clarke, MFRC Volunteer
Coordinator, will oversee
the project. In the fall, CF
members, DND employees
and their families will be
encouraged to register to
record their volunteer hours
through the MFRC web site at
www.halifaxmfrc.ca. For further
information on the Mayor’s
Pin, please contact LCdr
Pat Jessup at 721-1252.
