TRIDENT, FEBRUARY 23, 2009
Base Divisions well turned out
By Mike Bonin
BPAO
Amilitary parade that included
a visit by Santa Claus and
marches that sounded more like
Christmas carols were part of the
less formal side of Base Divisions
held December 9.
Capt(N) John Newton, Base Commander
decide that a parade to hone
military skills, pass out awards and
address the military personnel on
the base was warranted. The Base
Chief Petty Officer’s office organized
the parade.
Once all the participants were in
their place, the Base Commander
arrived and inspected the personnel
on parade and the Stadacona Band.
In his prayer, Cdr Robert Humble,
Formation Chaplain, asked to give
the base personnel strength through a
time of intense operations and a
reduction of resources. As well, he
asked for special prayers to remember
those recently deceased.
In his address to the parade
participants, guests and spectators
Capt(N) Newton stated the fleet gets
a lot of credit for the work that is
accomplished, but it is the combined
efforts of all the base units that
ensures the fleet actually makes it to
sea and is successful.
He noted that there are busy times
ahead, requiring all of us to be more
resourceful and take each challenge
as we are faced with it. “I tell the
Admiral all the time that I am proud
of our service to him and making
the Fleet second to none,” stated
Capt(N) Newton. “The tempo will
only increase as we look towards a
bigger naval presence in Afghanistan,
support to the Dockyard’s
250th Anniversary, the trooping of
the Queen’s Colours, Navy’s Centennial
and the Vancouver Olympics,
while not forgetting the other priority
work that cannot be left undone.”
He said everybody’s leadership will
be required throughout these very
exciting years.
Special awards were presented to
many base personnel during the
parade. The Canadian Forces Decoration,
(CD) signifying 12 years of
loyal and dedicated service was
awarded to LS Leah-Ann Walker, MS
Capt(N) John Newton was the reviewing officer during Base Divisions on
December 9, 2008.
Helene Coggins, SLt Marie-Eve
Brisson, SLt Byron Kendell, Capt
Stuart Whittaker and LCdr Rob Francis.
Cpl Guy Martin, MCpl Fred Corbett,
PO1 Patty Bouthat and Capt
Chris Quillan all received their first
clasp (22 years) to their CD. For 32
years of dedication, MS Eva Donovan
was awarded her second clasp to
her CD. MS Christine Nicholson was
given a certificate and pin to honour
her 12 years of dedicated service to
the Primary Reserve. MCpl Shawn
Sperling was awarded the Canadian
Forces ISAF medal for his service
with Task Force Afghanistan Kandahar
Military Police Company. OS
Krysti Deschane from Formation
Military Police was promoted to
Able Seaman.
A Base Commander’s Commendation
was awarded to LS Ian Chandler
and Cpl Robert Williamson for
their rescue effort following a report
that a person had jumped off the
Angus L Macdonald Bridge. Their
quick reaction, compassion and first
aid skills saved the person from any
further injury.
The Base Commander thanked
everybody for their part in seeing
the base’s GCWCC campaign beat
their targeted goal of $490,000. He
stressed it was not entirely about the
money as he cited different examples
where our kindness in other ways has
made a huge difference in the lives of
those less fortunate than we are.
Before the final tally, the campaign
went well beyond its target and had a
very successful drive.
As the parade was about to come
to a close, Santa and his elves
arrived, letting the Base Chief Petty
Office, CPO1 Ian Ronaldson know
that he was a naughty boy this year
and had forgotten to do something.
With a friendly reminder from
the man in red, the Base Chief
announced to the Base Commander
that as Christmas tradition states,
there would be a new Base Commander
for the day. The youngest
person on the base changes position
with the commander. This
year’s recipient was OS Brooke
Tucker, who is waiting to attend
training to become a boatswain.
After the ceremonial exchange of
uniforms, Capt(N) Tucker authorised
a march past, General Salute
and parade dismissal.
