Introduction to Caché Objects 1.4.2 Caché RoseLink Caché RoseLink is an add-in for the popular Rational Rose modeling tool that creates Caché class definitions from and displays existing classes as UML diagrams. This allows developers to take advantage of the object-oriented power of UML without the headache of mapping to relational tables. 1.4.3 SQL-based Development It is possible to develop Caché applications using SQL-based tools, since Caché automatically creates a class definition from any relational tables defined using SQL DDL statements. This approach does not exploit the full power of objects because you are limited by what DDL can express; however, it is useful for migrating legacy applications. 1.4.4 XML-based Development It is possible to develop class definitions as XML documents and load them into Caché. You can do this using either Caché's specific XML format for class definitions or you can use an XML schema representation. 1.5 Client Interoperability Caché Objects can communicate with a variety of environments: 1.5.1 Java Caché gives you the ability to use Caché objects within a Java environment as native Java classes. This gives Java-based applications direct, high-performance access to object and relational data stored within Caché. It also provides Caché applications with the ability to easily interoperate with Java. Caché supports the following connectivity with Java: • The Caché Java Binding—automatically exposes Caché classes as Java classes, complete with automatically generated accessor methods and sophisticated data caching. The full spectrum of object features are supported including custom data types, streams, collections, queries, and relationships. 6 Using Caché Objects
• The Caché EJB Binding—a version of the Java Binding that automatically creates Enterprise Java Bean components from Caché class definitions. • The Caché JDBC Driver—a high performance, native JDBC driver that provides relational access to data stored within a Caché database. For more information, see Using Java with Caché. 1.5.2 ActiveX / COM / .net Caché gives you the ability to use Caché objects within a COM-enabled environment such as Windows or the .net framework. Caché objects are automatically projected as standard COM components. This gives COM-based applications (such as Visual Basic) direct, highperformance access to object and relational data stored within Caché. It also provides Caché applications with the ability to easily interoperate with COM. Caché supports the following connectivity with COM: For more information, see Using ActiveX with Caché. Client Interoperability • The Caché ActiveX Binding—automatically exposes Caché classes as COM components, complete with sophisticated data caching. The full spectrum of object features are supported including custom data types, streams, collections, queries, and relationships. • The Caché ODBC Driver—a high performance, ODBC driver that provides relational access to data stored within a Caché database. This can be used with third-party control that only support relational access. 1.5.3 Caché Server Pages Using Caché Server Pages (CSP) you can easily create high-performance, object-based, web applications. For more information, see the Using Caché Server Pages (CSP). 1.5.4 C++ Caché gives you the ability to use Caché objects within C++-based applications. Caché objects are projected as standard C++ components. The resulting C++ classes are portable across a variety of operating systems and make use of the C++ standard library. This gives C++-based applications direct, high-performance access to object and relational data stored within Caché.
