Your Entry: Hi,
I just found this site 12/30/06. I was stationed at RAF Upper Heyford from Feb 1983 to
Feb 1985. It was so much fun. There were a lot of great people. I worked for the
Deputy Commander for Operations, and I learned so much during those years. I'm
sorry that I didn't know about the Aug 06 reunion - I would have come.
Your Entry: Merry Christmas to all! Wow, it as been over three years since I first contributed to
this guestbook (10/11/03, about page 207 by now). I have been lucky to have had
contact with James Stewart (a special shout out) and Jim Becktold. For some history I
was at Heyford in roughly '72 and '73 in MMS. I am still looking for Steve Fortelka, Ric
Gill, Jim Engelbrecht, Bob Barth, Jerry Fuson, Jim Thiele, Gary LePine, that other
Gary ()(and James Stewart told me the last name too, yikes) and any others. I would
like those that were at Nellis AFB with me in '71 to know I have also found Richard
"Craig" Corbett, our old friend who never made it to Heyford, but had a few stops in
Bentwaters, I hope to see him soon. So if any of you guys are lurking out there drop
me a line. I am also trying to contact Maureen Gowing or her daughter Michelle
Osborne from Cheltenaham, any info would be greatly appreciated, I would just like to
know thier well being and I hope it is good. I think of you both all the time. Again
Merry Christmas to all Heyfordites and all others!
having transferred in from Nellis. My wife JoAnn worked in the Base Exchange office
with Jan Allen (English), Linda Lorr (Ohio), and others; many names are long gone,
unfortunately. I remember how tough it was to find a place to live off-base within
commuting distance, how tough the Alerts were during the Oil War. We were outside
Banbury and Whitney at various times. Remember how the fog banks would roll in
and shut down operations The only way to get home was to follow the cats eyes
embedded down the centerline. I found google-earth to be a fun way to revisit. Best to
been in contact w/ all I've listed (except Thompson) in the past year. Many great
memories! I honeymooned in England in 1995 & went by to see the base. Odd feeling
it being empty. It was a great tour of duty and as a young man (18) going there was
wonderful opportunity. I've always been grateful to have gone there. I now serve as
Mayor of my hometown and a retired USAF F111 piolt, Col. Joe Narsavage, lives
here! Of course, I didn't know him there, but what a small world! Upper Heyford still
Attended the reunion in August at Heyford and had a great time. There was a nice
turnout but I think that the terrorist events of the Thursday just before that Saturday
may have made it difficult for some to attend, perhaps. I was able to meet (after
almost 23 years) a wonderful person from my Acct & Finance days, Audrey Flowers.
But in all the events of that day I failed to get an address or e mail from her. Can
anyone help me with that (she still lives in the Upper Heyford area I believe). Can't
believe I made such an oversight! The bus tour of the base was super. Thanks to
everyone who made the reunion happen. Nice job well done! And we sure missed
Duane Parks. But he did get some recognition at the reunion so that was well
deserved. Has anyone heard when they might post the group photos from the
reunion Keep up the good work Duane.
Name: Charles (Bud) Small Jr.
E-Mail: maukabud@hotmail.com
City/Country: Bend OR USA
Your Entry: My dad, Ssgt Charles(Chuck/Bud)Small (ret.,d), worked on the 111's from 1970 to
1973 (avionics,TFR)... we lived off base in Deddington, I went to kindergarten on
base! We had a funky English "Standard 10" and our swanky American luxury car: a
yellow 1966 AMC Rambler that seemed too big for the town roads! My dad loved the
Red Lion pub in Deddington, hehheh. I remember sitting in a 111 cockpit in my
miniature fatigues (complete w/ nametag and ssgt rank!), RAF Vulcan bomber flybys,
fish n chips wrapped in newspaper, sitting up front up top in the old double decker
busses! I was so young and culture shocked 3X over...born on Kadena AFB,
Okinawa, then to Nellis AFB NV, then to England!
If anyone is wondering, after Chuck returned stateside and retired from the Air Force,
he returned to his other and first love: the ocean...working as a civilian on the Coast
Guards boats electronics!! (in Atlantic City, NJ)
Chuck finally retired around 1986, bought a big RV and lived the dream of "full time
rv'ing" for awhile...he passed away far too early in 1998 from cancer, too stubborn to
be hospitalized. Gone, but most definitely NOT forgotten, his month old grandson
bears the name he had picked me to have: Jesse Thomas Small. I will be adding his
name to the roster here. We miss our "daddy" very much, those England days made
my family and I into the unique people we are today.
Guestbook Entry: Ahh, the fond memories of being stationed at "Upper Hemorrhoids". I recall spending
an extensive amount of time out on the North End of the runway in a cammy-covered
DP during a NATO TAC Eval... after being in alarm black for more than three hours, I
decided to heat up some Campbells Soup on my sterno stove. Had my masked pulled
back and about ready to eat my soup when out of the corner of my eye I spotted
some rather shiny boots. Looking out from my cammy netting, there stood a NATO IG
Team Member. The inspector asked me a few questions about my position, ROEs,
entry requirements, etc.... once he was satisified I knew my stuff, he told me to put the
stove out and put my mask back on... he never reported me! Just one of my many
fond memories of Upper Heyford.
Glad to see the home page! Thanks for giving us a method to reach out and touch
that i lived in and around Oxford for something like 30 yrs, seeing a lot of the aircraft
from Brize Norton,Fairford,Greenham Common and Upper Heyford, mainly in the 50s
60s & 70s,and its been good reading!
Nowadays i often go to a Saturday market held at Bovingdon,Hertfordshire (disused
WW2 american base)where Clark Gable and Glen miller and Jimmy Stewart and, i
believe, Eisenhower were among some of the famous visitors during the war,it still
has the main concrete runway in place, thats where the market stalls go!
Guestbook Entry: My dad was stationed at Upper Heyford from 1972 to 1975 he was with the 20th AMS
support. I spent the best years of my childhood walking around that base and
exploring Lower Heford. Many a Saturday was spent at the bowling alley and the
gym. The pictures of the old elementary school bring back fond memories, of walking
down that long sidewalk from base housing past the football field in the fog. I can still
remember all the hustle and bustle of being on alert. We lived on Portal drive, I swear
I can still visualize the roads right up to the house. I was fortunate enough to be in the
Boy Scout program there, I recall the Monday night meetings at the youth center and
the great support from the base in providing us with tents and of course some great
leaders. I hope to take my family back one day so they can taste the great fish and
chips from the market in Biecster. I look forward to more pictures, unfortunately I do
not have any from our time there. Thanks for the memories.
Team (CAT) 1981-1983.
Guestbook Entry: Was at Heyford Mar 76 to Mar 78. Assigned to "C" Flight Security. MSgt Edwin
Woody was the Flight Chief, Capt Mike Arnold was the Shift Commander(As a riffed
C-5 pilot he wasn't to fond of being a cop). I can remember the first day getting of the
bus and hearing ny name being yelled out. With out thinking I yelled back over here
and when I turned around and I was face to face with a Bird Colonel, who I later
learned was Col Tom Foley the Base Commander. It seems my sponsor was on leave
and the SPS orderly room had forgotten to send over someone to meet me. Col.
Foley grabbed my bags, threw them in his staff car and proceeded to give the VIP
tour of Heyford and then delivered me to Bldg#446(SPS barracks). I later learned that
Col Foley had been my dad's commander when he was in the service (He was also a
SP). I can remember playing tag with the ART pickups in the WSA when it was foggy,
working the VA/WSA Safe Nest Towers, good old Security 9 (Chow Bus, the old 67
piece of junk, before the new one), working the ECP at the WSA as an alarm monitor.
Some of the old guys were Gary Ficken, Karl Preuss, Jim Mantay, Ricky Secondo,
Bubba Hope (crazy @#%$! dog handler), Lyle Smith, Ma Fetner (man he loved those
scooter pies in the box nasties), Jim Shy, Mac Owens, Jim Turnage, Jim Huber, Jim
Porter (Flight Clerk), Ray Musselman, Lennie Martin, Alan Bogart, Frank Patrician,
Bob Brown, Andy Goldstein, Ron Kircher (worked in the Armory), Ray Lempa, T.C.
Millsaps, Amn. Oneishia( before they kicked him out for shooting the clearing barrel),
Duane Parks, Cloudy Fairweather, Joe Flanino, Mert Laney, and so many more that
my poor brain can't remember. Duane, I can not believe how much I have thought of
those days, almost 30 years ago, and how much they meant to me, the days and
friends of my youth. Thank You so much.
Guestbook Entry: I'm glad you guys are so proud of your old base and have such a detailed and
interesting web site. I'm working my way through it.
To us Brits, there was something fascinating about the F-111: I think the noise was
pretty unique, and back in the bad (and pretty frightening) old days of the Cold War,
there was something reasuring about the knowledge that we were being protected.
My only personal experience of UH was one Sunday night back in the mid-80's. My
girlfriend (now wife) and I were stuck in heavy traffic north of Oxford and diverted
through the back roads and through The Heyfords. It was around 7 pm and we saw
an attractive pub (the name escapes me) and stopped for a drink. The walls were
covered in pictures of US airplanes and it was clearly a placed used by airmen. The
place started to fill up with guys, and to a man, everyone greeted us and we even
ended up talking to some of them. You wouldn't usually get that from English locals!
I still drive past the old place when the M40 is blocked; it's a bit sad nowdays.
You were (and still are) a credit to your nation and clear evidence of the 'Special
Relationship'.
Best wishes,
Paul
I worked with some great guys, they had to be - to keep from sneaking into my room
Jefferson, if you read this PLEASE give me a call. I had your baby and named it after
you! I remember long nights getting Schlitz out of the beer machine at $0.25 each and
playing spades all night long. Getting a room accross from the NCO club. What a
mistake they made putting me there! I had a couple of great suite-mates there. Hey
Jose Rodrigues and Kevin "Boner" Morrow! Remeber that crazy video with Boner
eating the marshmallow Thanks for always flying and buying the pizza Kevin. You
always had the guts to go up and talk to the cutest girls in The King's Arms in Oxford,
but never the guts to answer their follow up questions. It has been mentioned here
before, but man, I would love to get my lips around just one more Kebab from the little
I don't have a lot of pictures from then so it is nice to see. Being young and having a
some good friends while I was there and as I look back at it I did have some good
times.
My first ORI there I spent 22 hours on a close boundry post with a radio that did not
work improper clothing for a British spring and once we got off post we had to be back
in 5 hours just to do it all over again. I look back at it and laugh now.
Air Force career. 20TFW Headquarters. Worked with Col. Thompson; Col. Neff; SSgt.
David Sowers; Capt. Cindy Grindell-Sowers; Capt. David Varner; Capt. Rick Welch
and his future wife Tracy who was the nurse that helped me have my son
Michael(now an evanglist); and others I don't remember ranks..Becky Ritchie;
Marquarite Napier; Jerry Molina; Chuck (Metz) ;and my favorite friend- Marilyn
Bussell; my old roomate Joan Berhernd; and the two people who mean alot to me;
Doug and Linda Angle. We all worked at the 20TFW Headquarters and were like
family.
I married one of the best WSO's; Captain (at that time, now retired Col.) James
Patterson. We moved to RAF Lakenheath in 1988. We now live 3 minutes apart near
Wichita, Kansas and raised both our boys(mike; 20 an evangelist); (anthony now
18..headed for ROTC Air Force, wants to negoitiate between countries during war
and peacetime)both in college despite our divorce.
James remarried right away while I spent 13yrs before finding the true love of my life
and becoming an instant Grandma. I loved RAF UH and adore coming to this site. My
new husband and I will be having a honeymoon in England in 2007 and I know I will
cry when I go to the now closed base. I promise to take pictures.
at Headquarters and at the time was a very busy pregnant (still single) mom to be and
then mom.
My office supplied me with not just the items to help have my baby; but the support I
didn't receive from my family. I'll never forget that kindness and I even still have their
cards. What great young men I have as children now!
As you can see, UH didn't only mean 15-17hr. days in Chem gear stuck in the mission
command vaults until getting blown up and moving over to the "alert" building hoping
someone would "kill you off" accidently, (but they couldn't because of my level 4 top
the enlisted and O clubs and the girls who waited outside of them and the first
McDonalds that came to the village I lived in...Banbury. LOVED IT.
RAF Upper Heyford was a place that bonded so many people together..it was for the
Guestbook Entry: A shout out to all that were at Heyford from 1988-90 (especially all who lived or
partied at 440). Looking to hear from anyone who remembers the busride to RAF
Molesworth for M-60 Qual. when no one on the bus was above the rank of Sgt. That
never happened again!!! We got lost several times and also took a detour into a major
British city so someone could check on his girl. Also, Brice Sabin, please email me as
I have tried on numerous occasions to contact you by email but to no evail. I always
get an undelivered message.
Until next time---great site. Adios
Guestbook Entry: It was nice to find this website. I was in the 20th SPS from 78-80 and have some
pretty fond memorys. Tracy Scarbrough was one of my best friends. I also have some
bad memorys, like being left out at the end of the "27" runway, in a bunker, with just a
m-60, a 45 and a flare for 36 hours...{only use the flare in an emergency!} and no
radieo during the Iran Hostage {due to the fact that we ran out}. I ended up getting
Honorably Discharged after I got into a car wreck with the daughter of some high up
guy that worked with British Leyland. We were both hammered But she was driving
and She crashed the car into a ditch and i was trying to get the car out of the ditch
when the Bobbies arrived, and since i was in the drivers seat, i was the driver, and i
was busted!!!!I also was not a model airman, so out i went....I have to admit that i also
did not have the best attitude either due to the fact that i signed up to be a jet
mechanic and due to the fact that i was 16 years old and homeless { due to beating
up a counsler at my foster home} my recruter fed me, clothed me, and as i was
getting on the plane at Oakland he told me that the only way i could go in at that time
was as an SP, and i could change back to what i wanted to be after i got to Lackland,
so not wanting to be homeless anymore i went along with the program, and much to
my dismay, when I talked to my DI, He laughed and said i could do that when i reupped......boy
did i feel screwed. Anyway that had alot to do with my bad additude
along with some other incidents, but dont get me wrong, i will still fight to the death for
my country, but i got screwed by our Government.....go figure....
Guestbook Entry: Great job on this website Duane! It saddens me to see the state of Upper Heyford. I
was stationed there from September 1970 to January 1974. I watched from the
weather observer shack on the control tower as the first F-111s arrived and the again
as the last F-100s left there. Had some of the best times of my life there as it was my
first assignment out of tech school. I was in one of the lesser known tenant units
there...Det 17, 28th (later 31st) Weather Squadron. I was also one of only two guys
(later the only guy)that were part of the cheerleaders squad in 1973 when we won the
USAFE football championship. What a party!!! I still have my SKYKING potatoman
patch. The jacket has long since worn out.
