UPPER HEYFORDMemorial Web SiteGUEST BOOK ARCHIVE 2008www.raf-upper-heyford.org¡¢£¤¡¤¥¦§Your Entry: One of the most exciting tours I had in my career. Mind you, all of my assignmentswere quite good. A good grounding for the return to civilianlife.Thursday 08/07/2008 8:39:25pmName: Kerry PfoorE-Mail: kpfoor@hansonbridgett.comCity/Country: San Francisco, CAYour Entry: My Dad was stationed at UH from 1983 until he retired in 1992. I have to say as a kidgrowing up it was the best place ever. I moved there in 5th grade and went to schoolon UH (the year before the new school opened up on Croughton) I graduated aHadite in 1991 and I am so proud of that.I remember when I turned 18 I made my dad go get me a club card so I could get inthe club "legally" I could always get in since I knew so many folks that worked therebut it was nice not to have to worry about it. I remember my senior year of high schoolgoing to a few all-nighters at the club (always on the 3 day weekends) and then afterthe club closed going and standing in line and waiting for a kebab those things werethe best and I have never had anything like it since. My dad was SP he started out as flight leader for "B" flight I think then "C" flight theneventually a desk job which I know he stressed about but liked the hours better.I remember as a kid my dad getting the call in the middle of the night to go in thatthere was an alert and he had to get in there he would be gone for a few days thencome home and crash then back at it again. My Dad is semi-retired now and still works for the Govt. up in Wyoming. He just leftEngland 3 years ago I thought he was a british citizen as long as he lived there.I loved UH those were the best times. My junior & Senior prom was at the Officer'sclub we hated it then but what a great memory now. I remember as a kid we wouldwalk that base like nobody's business back and forth just hanging out and then goingto work at the commissary bagging groceries.Fun times. I just had to share. Thanks for all the memories Upper Heyford!Tuesday 08/05/2008 12:29:55amName: Kris LandrusE-Mail: Kris.Landrus@zurichna.comCity/Country: Vancouver/USYour Entry: I was enjoying all the memories that others have taken the time to share and Iremember one time when I was doing a maintenance run on the Bravo hardstands(outside the Tab-V's) and we were doing a check of the Environmental systems, whenall of sudden I got a face full of white debris (not the "snow" you can sometimes getwhen it's cooling a little too well at sea level, but some type of white material came outPage 21 of 55

Jack Quick (our maintenanceNCOIC for the whole squadron, mind you!)asking me if I was alright... I was, but it wasa little embarrassing having an "audience" of that level. One of the many memorabletimes on swing shift! How many of us remember the white knuckle engine runs in thehush house and playing musical fuel tanks to keep the ever emptying jet balanced onfuel while trying to get the thing to trim out?? I really enjoyed those nights, though. The endless wing sweeps to stack jets nose to tail in the Tab-V's.... ahhhh, thosewere the days! We had to live off base for the first three years, because thehousing list was so long. First lived in Merton, then Chesterton. I remember our busesto Heyford (for school) were luxury buses! Very nice. Remember the school buildingswith big chunks of wall missing, TAPS being played at midnight, all lights andtelevisions off for air raid practices, doing the duck-and-cover practices at school, seeing all the armed men protecting the school from any possible problems, crossingthe curved/slippery rock bridge so you didn't have to walk "all the way around" to getto the school and if you fell, well, too bad for you! Remember going to the dances atthe Teen Center, having ice cream at the Brown Derby, just able to walk around baseas a little girl without a care in the world. I believe we lived on Randolph Place oncewe moved on base. Love the site...haven't seen many people who were there whenwe were. Only on page 46, so will have to keep looking!Oh, my best friends were Briarlee Brandon and Lucille Lengel. One year our teacherMrs. Binghamtom (I think) was choking Steve Divibliss, because he couldn't sit still inhis chair. Steve Divibliss was good friends with Steve Hansen. Iremember the swing shift shuffle just hoping that no tools we missing as we turnedthem in at the end of the shift...carefully counting each chit to make sure they were allthere...Hoping that the jack screw in the rollout kit would survive another day forinevitable engine rollout or removal. Only to get home, collapse into bed for 20minutes and then be rudely awoken for a recall!! Seriously, though, my tours at RAFUH and RAFL were some of the best times of my life, I spent 10 years in total in theUK and still miss everything about it to this day. UPPER HEYFORDMemorial Web SiteGUEST BOOK ARCHIVE 2008www.raf-upper-heyford.org¡¢£¤¡¤¥¦§Your Entry: Born on RAF Upper Heyford 03-07-1987.Tuesday 05/13/2008 12:46:09amName: Brian BrockE-Mail: bkmbrock@yahoo.comCity/Country: Springboro, OhioYour Entry: I had the priviledge of serving with the 2130th Communications Squadron inCroughton, England from 1984-1986. An important mission at the time no doubt. Some will probably never realize just how important Croughton was, and that it playedsuch an important role in keeping the peace during the Cold War. We were young andready to do what was necessary if called upon. Most of our work was passiveaggressive, except in April 86 when Reagan unleashed the might of the USAF andUSN on Libya. I'm proud to have served my country there. That said, I miss a lot from that time. The eighties were an exciting time to be inEngland. Reagan, Thatcher, punk rock, etc. I recall meeting many interesting peoplethere too, both Americans and British. I will mention a few veterans: J. Frisbee, S.Burke, C. Smith, M. Galeano. I recall many more, but won't mention them all here. Itwas an honor to serve with them and be part of their lives for awhile.I still miss the beautiful English countryside. I enjoyed the routine trips to Brackley,Banbury, Bicester, Oxford, and London too. I only wish I had taken a few morepictures. A drive or train ride through the countryside could be mesmorizing. Weathernot withstanding, most would probably agree we were so lucky to live in centralEngland for awhile. The pubs. Some of the Pubs I'm recalling are the Crewe Arms in Hinton In TheHedges, and the Whitmore Arms in Hethe. Both were great places to relax, eat, anddrink a pint. Of course, the NCO clubs at Croughton and Heyford were cool too, but Ialways preferred to party off base.Overall, what a fantastic experience. Seems like another lifetime now. My bestregards go out to anyone that might recognize my name. It is hard to believe that I still miss that place so much. I lookback and know that my time at Heyford was the best time of my life. We were all soclose, like family. I still miss my very best friend, Eric Rolefson. We had so much funpub crawling together. We spent a lot of time at the Plow drinking beer. Weintroduced our British friends to a little drinking game we Americans play calledquarters. I will never forget the yearly TDYs to Turkey. I got my incentive ride in 006my last trip there. That was the best!! I would love to hear from anyone that was atHeyford the same time as me. It would just be nice to talk about the old days. I wentto the Air Museum in Warner Robins and found 055, the pride of the 55th, it broke myheart to see it looking so warn and uncared for. I climbed into the wheel well and saton the speed brake and just thought about what a great experience it was to be atHeyford when that jet was still flying. I still remember all the good times with DaveVenable, the crew chief of 055. I miss all of those incredible people I worked with.Man, those were the days.Page 37 of 55

I was with the 20th SPS fromJune 1982 until November 1985. I arrived as a E-4 Sgt and made E-5 SSgt inNovember 1982. I worked A Flight Security for 18 months and then ran the Armoryuntil I left. My wife, Deb, worked at Civilian Payroll. I lived on base (three differentdorms - 2 on Heyford and 1 on Croughton) the first year in the UK and then lived offbasein Woodstock. We lived right on the main road (Oxford Street) in a flat in an oldhouse - called Hope House. One of my favorite memories is of the "Crazy Gang" - agroup of Brits that maintained the hangar doors. They ran around base in an old LandRover and just thrived on giving the cops fits. Great guys. I worked for TSgt Al Dorne,"the Prince" when I was in the Armory. We had a Sgt who had gone native - he wasreferred to as Radar and had married an English girl. He used to ride a scooter towork. Bill Thomas started an Honor Guard, don't know if it lasted, but was a goodgroup of guys. My best experience was an incentive ride in an F-111 when I wasselected as Wing NCO of the Quarter. What a tremendous flight. Captain Miller fromthe 55th TFS was the pilot. I remember the great burger and fries from the bowlingalley. Alerts, the Chow Bus, "Peace Campers, St. Aldates in Oxford, the West Endshows in London. Great place, great times.Page 50 of 55
