I am proud to be the part
of this special day.
The whole village
recognizes the importance
of ANZAC day and it is
heart warming to see so
many past students
attending the Service and
participating in the
March.
The number of wreaths
laid by family and friends
as tributes to servicemen
and women is an
indication of how much
we care and our
Liz Aitken delivered a well researched and
emotional commemoration address, which
drew heavily on her New Zealand heritage.
Those privileged to hear her might now have
newly informed views about ANZAC day
while a complete copy of the Liz Aitken’s
address will be printed in our June issue.
All in the family
Pictured above: Kangaroo Valley resident Phillip Scott (second
Jacob (far right) at the Valley ANZAC service.
Phillip and Leonie Scott have a shared affiltiation with the special day
through their fathers, who both served in the Second World War albeit
in different hemispheres.
Leonie’s father was Harry Mervyn Eagle born 21/3/1922 who enlisted
in September 1940, aged 18 , for the duration of hostilities and was
demobilised in February 1946.
He served on many naval vessels as a stoker including, HMAS
Waterhen, Stuart, Vendetta, Napier, Nizam, Nepal, Quiberon and
others.
Most notable service was on the HMAS Waterhen from 3/2/41 until it
was attacked by enemy aircraft and sunk in action 29/6/41.
He continued to serve in the middle east and Mediterranean until 1943
on the above mentioned ships, when he was given sick leave for four
months for various skin conditions and returned to Sydney.
He then returned to service and served on the HMAS Lismore,
Wollongong and finally the Maryborough mostly in tropical areas
such as Colombo, and New Guinea until after V.P. day.
HMAS Waterhen listing to port prior to being taken in tow and later
sinking at Tobruk. Waterhen left Alexandria, Egypt, laden with troops
for Tobruk on 28 June 1941. During the evening of 29 June
both Waterhen and her 10th Flotilla companion, HMS Defender, were
attacked by German dive-bombers. Waterhen was crippled and holed
but fortunately without casualties and Defender was able to go
alongside and take off the troops and the ship’s company. Despite
attempts to save ‘the old chook’ as she was known, Waterhen rolled
