May 2011 Kangaroo Valley Voice www.kangaroovalley.nsw.au Page 35 Two odd couples Northholm Grammar is to bring two Odd Couples to Kangaroo Valley After the success of last year’s production of ‘A Few Good Men’ at the Kangaroo Valley Hall, Northholm Grammar school is bringing it’s all new 2011 production of Neil Simon’s classic comedy ‘The Odd Couple’ to the Valley. ‘The Odd Couple’ first became a hit on the Broadway stage, and a hugely successful film (starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau) and a long running television series. What many people don’t know is that Neil Simon has actually written two versions of the play- a male version and a female version. In a theatrical first, Northholm is presenting both of Simon’s versions in the same run. Jackson MacDonald (Felix) and Alex Flatman (Oscar) Valley residents will have the choice to see either the Male or Female version of the show at the Kangaroo Valley Community Hall on May 27 and 28. See exact times see below. The play follows the story of two room mates (both recently divorced) trying to live together in one apartment. One is a horrendously lazy slob (‘Oscar Madison’ in male version, ‘Olive’ in the female version) the other is an extremely fussy neat-freak (‘Felix Ungar’ in the male version, ‘Florence’ in the female version). Though the plot of both versions is similar; the dialogue, characters and some of Simon’s trademark comedic lines are very different. Brad Turbott, Northholm’s Drama Co-Ordinator and director of both versions of the play in a Kangaroo Valley regular. “The Kangaroo Valley community is so welcoming and the students really love coming down here. It would have been the most asked questions at auditions- ‘Are we going to Kangaroo Valley again’” he said. Student Alex Flatman, who plays Oscar in the male version said, “When we came down to the valley last year, it was so amazing to see so many people supporting our show. Everyone in the Valley is so nice.” The students have been working on the shows now for five months, and have been having a blast throughout the rehearsal process. The cast have been honing their comic timing and the crew has been busily building sets and finding props. “It’s been really interesting trying to design ‘mess’ in a guys apartment and a ‘mess’ in a girls apartment,” said production manager Georgia Love. Once again, the production will be making a donation from its proceeds to the Kangaroo Valley/ East Timor Partnership. “It is so great to have so much fun working on a show and coming to such a great place, plus being able to help others as well,” said Anja Bless (Florence Ungar) about helping the partnership. The cast, crew, teachers and the many families who are coming down for the weekend are looking forward to coming down with ‘The Odd Couple’ on tour in the Valley.
