MIDWEST PEREGRINE SOCIETY
In October 2007, the Midwest Peregrine Society was formed as a non-profit 501(c3) fund-raising
organization. Its purpose is to ensure the long-term maintenance of the monitoring, data
collection, and reporting on the status of the peregrine falcon in the Midwestern states and
Canadian provinces that has been established. Redig is the President and CEO, Juli Ponder the
secretary/treasurer, Peifer the operations vice-president, and Fallon the VP for Minnesota field
operations. The Board of Directors consists of: Harrison B. Tordoff, Robert Berry, Wick Corwin,
Frank Gill, Walter Pratt and Pat Redig. The business address is 1920 Fitch Avenue St. Paul,
Minnesota 56308.
MIDWEST PEREGRINE FALCON WEBSITE
A peregrine website for the Midwest is open to the public at http://midwestperegrine.org.
Richard Peifer, Mark Decker, Bruce Fall, and Kyle Hammond from the Biology Program,
University of Minnesota, developed the web site. Peifer designed the website, Decker and
Hammond adapted the database to the website and made it searchable, and Fall designed the
database at its start in 1992. In addition to general information about the peregrine program, the
site presents the Midwest peregrine database in a searchable format, making it useful for research
as well as for locating specific records or groups of records.
Many features were added to the database during 2006. The additional refinement and
programming was done by the partnership of Rick Peifer and Kyle Hammond, IT specialist for
the Biology Program. The first new element was a temporary database that can be accessed by
authorized individuals allowing them to submit data. When fully tested and operational, this
feature will permit direct data entry. Once the entire dataset for a season has been collected, it
will be checked for errors and then added permanently to the main database. The second
element was addition of exact GPS lat/long coordinates for each site, a work still in progress.
This function in the database has been linked to Google Maps, allowing operators to obtain
1

actual 3D views of peregrine nest sites. The third element is a section of the database where
detailed reports submitted by state and area coordinators are posted in toto as received. These
detailed reports contain more information than what is summarized in this annual report, along
with many excellent photographs taken at the various sites. Lastly, the detailed work by Josep
Segura in preparing the map of known peregrine territories (Figure 1) for 2007 is gratefully
acknowledged.
BACKGROUND
All peregrines banded in the U.S. Midwest (ND, MN, WI, MI, SD, NE, IA, IL, IN, OH, KS, MO,
KY) in 2006 wear a bicolored project band, black over green on the left leg. Wild-produced birds
have a purple anodized USFWS band on the right leg; hacked birds have a gold anodized
USFWS band on the right leg. In Canada (SE MB, NW ON), hacked birds receive a red band
and wild-produced birds get a black band, in addition to a silver USFWS band. Project bands are
intended to be readable in the field, given the right circumstances and appropriate optics (see
article by Tordoff included in 2006 report).
Many of the black/green and black/red bands (from earlier years) have the upper or lower
character (or both) tipped to the left on its side; these we show by using a star (*) to indicate the
tipped-over letter or number, for example, *2/E or H/*4. It is essential to include the star because
all combinations are in use (H/4, *H/4, H/*4, *H/*4 for example). It is also important to put all
bands on right side up, to make them easier to read in the field. To avoid confusion, numerals
take precedence over letters; that is, numerals 1 and 0 are used on the project color bands, letters
I and O are not used.
We cannot change names of localities in the peregrine database when the names of buildings or
companies change. The original names are entered in the database in too many places.
Incomplete corrections would confuse searches for data. The same goes for individual birds—
once named and entered, the name sticks.
Users may download the contents of the database into an Excel spreadsheet. This is
accomplished by clicking on the “submit data” link, then at the top of the banding information
table, click on “Output birds for FileMaker "Peremain" import.” This will generate a transition
file that you should save. Then open this file with Excel, and select the “delimited with
comma’s”option, click “finish”, and you will have the file in a spreadsheet format.
INTRODUCTION
Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) egg laying began in March in the southern Midwest (Ohio)
and progressively later to the north. Known territorial pairs were reported at 223 compared to
210 in 2006. However, several sites, especially on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, lacked data
this year because of lack of access to nest sites. A minimum estimate of the number of young
produced was 443 compared to 435 in 2006. Table 1 is a nesting summary for ten years by state
and province (sequence here and in the main list below is north tier of states first, west to east;
second tier, etc., then NW Ontario and SE Manitoba).
constitutes a countable pair. Production of young per territorial pair was 2.0 in 2002, 2.2 in 2003,
2.2 in 2004, 2.1 in 2005, 2.0 in 2006, and 1.9 in 2007.
SUMMARY OF PEREGRINE NESTING IN 2007
In the Midwestern United States, southeastern Manitoba, and the Lake Superior basin of Ontario
in 2007, 226 pairs, up from 211 pairs in 2006, were known to be on territories (although we are
lacking information on several sites reported on in previous years), 186 pairs (82%) laid eggs,
163 pairs (89% of the nesting pairs) were successful in fledging 443 young, 2.72 young per
successful pair, 2.4 per nesting pair, 1.9 per territorial pair. Of the 186 pairs that laid eggs, 88
(47%) were on buildings, 28 (15%) were on smokestacks, 16 (9%) on bridges, and 54 (29%) on
cliffs.
Comparing this year with 2006, the total number of known pairs was larger (226 compared to
211 in 2006), however, with some sites not visited or unreported, it is not an entirely informed
comparison; percentage-wise, fewer nested (82% vs. 90%), and percentage of successful nesting
pairs was the same (89% this year vs. 89% in 2006). Ten more pairs fledged young this year than
last (163 vs. 153) resulting in more young fledged (443 vs. 435).
Three captive-bred young were hacked at a new site in Missouri in 2007.
TOTALS FOR REGION:
2007 POPULATION STATUS
• 163 known successful pairs fledged 443 young (SP in list below), some of which
were not banded
• 23 pairs laid eggs but failed to fledge young (LE)
• 40 pairs, non-breeding (NB)
• 226 territorial pairs (SP, LE, NB)
• For each state, province, or area, successful pairs (SP) are listed first, followed by
pairs laying eggs (LE), then non-breeding pairs (NB).
NORTH DAKOTA
1. SP-Community First Bank, Fargo (currently known as Bank of the West), Cass County,
North Dakota. Wick Corwin reports that six-year-old female Frieda b/g 24/A, 2001 hatch
from Dairyland Cooperative in Alma, WI, here for the fifth year, paired again with ten-yearold
male Dakota Ace b/r *H/D, 1997 hack in Sioux Falls, SD, here for the eighth year. Four
eggs were laid in the box, all hatched and four young fledged, two males and two females.
First year nesting attempted: 2000 Total young produced: 21
2. NB-Smiley Tower, Grand Forks, Grand Forks County, North Dakota. David Lampert
reported that a trio of peregrines was on territory this spring. Two-year-old male Bear b/g
K/06, 2005 hatch from the Community First Bank, Fargo, ND was observed on territory with
an adult unbanded female. The pair showed typical courtship behavior but did not lay eggs or
raise any young. A third bird, a female, was seen in the area sporadically throughout the
6

spring, but did not show as much “ownership” of the site. We hope that the pair will survive
through migration and return in 2008. The male remained on territory throughout the
summer, with the females both gone by late May.
MINNESOTA
3. SP-Colonnade Building, Hwy. 100 and I-394, Golden Valley, Hennepin County, Minnesota.
For the second year, seven-year-old male Malik b/g 5/*9, fledged in 2000 from North Central
Life building, was paired with four-year-old female Loree b/g 49/E, here for the third year.
Malik had previously nested for three seasons at the NSP Riverside Plant in Minneapolis.
Four eggs were laid in an open gravel tray, all hatched and four young fledged, two males
and two females. Shortly after fledging, one of the female chicks was brought to The Raptor
Center with a severe spinal injury and was euthanized.
First year nesting attempted: 1991 Total young produced: 55
4. SP-Multifoods Tower (currently called City Center), Minneapolis, Hennepin County,
Minnesota. The male here for his third season is four-year-old Younger b/g 04/N, fledged in
2003 at Maiden Rock, Wisconsin. The female at this site is once again an unbanded female,
most likely the same female here since 2003 from photograph identification. In late February,
a different female, ten-year-old Mendota b/r *4/C was observed at the nest tray and making a
scrape with Younger. On March 19, Bud Tordoff observed a territorial battle in the box
between Mendota and the unbanded adult female. Both birds received significant injuries
before flying from the box and out of view. On March 20, Fallon made a trip to the next box
and observed the unbanded adult female fly to the site box, but she appeared to be somewhat
lethargic and was found to have some significant scalp lacerations. Within the week she
appeared to recover and begin egg laying. Five eggs were laid and three young hatched and
fledged, one male and two females.
Special Note: 2007 was the 20th Anniversary of the fledging of the first peregrine in the
wild in the Midwest since DDT wiped out the original population. Many people that were
involved in that significant banding in 1987 were also at the banding this year, here at the
City Center site, celebrating the recovery of a species through the effort of many people and
organizations.
First year nesting attempted: 1987 Total young produced: 42 (plus 21 hacked)
5. SP-City Hall, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. An adult female peregrine wearing
only a silver USFWS band on her left leg (1807-348??), origin unknown, was first reported
at this site in 2000. She once again was paired with four-year-old Bor b/g 03/N, fledged in
2003 at NSP Monticello, Minnesota. In mid-February, Fallon and John Arent placed a
nesting tray in a cubbyhole on the east side of the 5th Street Tower of the century old City
Hall, where observations can be made from a nearby parking garage. The pair, closely
watched by Barbara Hendrickson, nested in the tray and laid 3 eggs. One egg hatched and
one male fledged in late June. Jim Mussell and Joel Sniejowski climbed at this site.
7

First year nesting attempted: 2000 Total young produced: 8
6. SP-Riverside Plaza/I-94 Mississippi River Bridge, Minneapolis, Hennepin County,
Minnesota. Thirteen-year-old Phoebe, after nesting six years on the river bridge, in 2004
moved a mile to a box at Riverside Plaza, where she first attempted to nest in 1997. She had
paired for the fourth year with seven-year-old Rocket b/g L/M. This year, three eggs were
laid, all hatched and three young fledged, one male and two females. Phoebe is an escaped
falconry bird from Kansas in 1994 and is still identifiable by her breeder band and leather
anklet. Rocket b/g L/M fledged in 2000 from a smokestack at Xcel Energy Riverside,
Minneapolis, Minnesota.
First year nesting attempted: 1997 Total young produced: 14
7. SP-Lock and Dam 1/Ford Parkway Bridge, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. A
new male, three-year-old Survivor b/g 42/N, a 2004 hatch from the NSP High Bridge in St.
Paul, Minnesota was paired with seven year-old female Amelia b/g 0/*G, here for her sixth
season. The pair once again nested in the nest box installed in 2003 by Mike DeRusha, Jim
Ryan, Nate Johnson, and others of the Lock and Dam 1 staff on a man-altered cliff at the
west end of Lock and Dam 1, about 250 yards downstream from the bridge. Four eggs were
laid in the box, four hatched and fledged, one male and three females.
We have observed four different males on territory this past year, which shows how many
“floaters” there may be in the population. In early October 2006, Tordoff identified a new
male, Survivor b/g 42/N, in residence with Amelia. This same pair was present until late
February 2007, when Tordoff again identified a third bird on territory, male MPR2 b/g D/32,
2004 fledge from the Multifoods Tower in Minneapolis, MN. On March 18, Survivor was
again seen back at the box and copulating with Amelia. In late June, a fourth male was at the
nest box with the recently fledged four young chicks and Amelia. This male turned out to be
one-year-old Skippy b/g W/34, a 2006 hatch from Cedar Riverside Apartments in
Minneapolis, MN. On August 10, Tordoff identified male Scotty b/g P/T, breeding male
here in 2006, back on territory with Amelia and several of the juvenile chicks. Within two
weeks, male Skippy b/g W/34 was seen back on territory and remains on territory with
female Amelia at the time of this report. The activity at this single site shows how important
it is to identify any bird on territory, when possible.
This site offers some of the best public viewing of a peregrine nest and post-fledging
behavior from the observation platform. In the fall 2007, a new web cam will be installed
that will give the public an improved view into the life of the birds at this territory.
First year nesting attempted: 2000 Total young produced: 25
8. SP-Norwest Financial Center (currently called Wells Fargo), Xerxes and I-494,
Bloomington, Hennepin County, Minnesota. For the eleventh year, a pair nested in an open
tray on the east side of the building. Throughout the winter, Jackie Fallon observed a pair of
peregrines, ten-year-old Mendota b/r *4/C and eight-year-old male Nero b/g V/D, here for
his seventh season. In late February, Fallon observed Mendota to be on territory with
8

Younger at the Multifoods site (see site #4). On March 20, Fallon observed Mendota on
territory at this site, looking no worse for the wear after the territorial battle at Multifoods
Tower the previous day. That same day, Fallon identified the new adult male, which turned
out to be MPR2 b/g D/32, who had been at site #7 for the previous month. The pair laid three
eggs; all hatched and fledged, two males and a female. Mendota hatched in 1997 at the
Mendota Bridge in Fort Snelling State Park and MPR2 hatched in 2004 at the Multifoods
Tower in Minneapolis, MN. As noted above, he had previously spent several weeks at the
Lock and Dam #1 site.
First year nesting attempted: 1997 Total young produced: 30
9. SP-North Central Life Tower (currently called Bremer Tower), St. Paul, Ramsey County,
Minnesota. For the third year, five-year-old Jill b/g 50/B, fledged in 2002 from a cliff at
Castle Rock, Wisconsin was paired with thirteen-year-old Sota b/r 8/*E, fledged in 1994
from the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. The pair laid four eggs, three hatched, two males and
one female fledged in late June from the original box, installed in 1988. As noted in previous
years, the male at this site has partially missing digits or stunted talons on two of the four
toes on each foot. Even so, and despite his age and disability, he seems able to provide food
for his mate and young.
First year nesting attempted: 1988 Total young produced: 49
10. SP-North Star Bridge, Highway 169, Mankato, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. New Site. In
December 2006, it was reported to Jackie Fallon by a reliable Mankato resident that a pair of
peregrines had been on territory throughout the summer. However, it was recently reported to
Fallon that the pair present in 2006 produced at least 2 young that were observed in October
of that season. This season, Fallon observed a pair of peregrines on territory at the Highway
169 Bridge over the Minnesota River that separates North Mankato and Mankato. Threeyear-old
female Betsy b/g 31/D, 2004 fledge from NSP Prairie Island, MN and an unbanded
adult male nested on the northern tier of the bridge, center of the deck. Four eggs were laid
and three young males hatched and were banded on June 18. A 40’ ladder was used to reach
the site. The three young fledged successfully and were closely monitored by Mankato
resident Merrill Frydendall and DOT staff Larry Cooper and his bridge staff through the
summer months. Dr. Luis Cruz and Karla Anderson scaled the ladder to reach the nesting
ledge for banding.
First year nesting attempted: 2006 Total young produced: 5
11. SP-Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Olmsted County, Minnesota. Tom Behrens report that a pair of
peregrines nested successfully here for the third year, after seven unproductive years between
1997-2004. An unbanded adult male and an unbanded adult female produced four eggs and
fledged four young, two males and two females. One of the female chicks was found in July
with a severe case of trichimoniasis and was euthanized. As in the past, the entire banding
process was televised throughout the clinic. The pair and young were videoed through the
season for patients, visitors and staff to view in the lobby of the clinic, offering all a unique
9

view of peregrine behavior. A special presentation at this year’s banding event celebrated 20
years of participation in peregrine recovery.
First year nesting attempted: 1991 Total young produced: 27 (plus 32 hacked)
12. SP-NSP Black Dog Plant, Eagan, Dakota County, Minnesota (aka Xcel Energy Blackdog
Plant). Bob Anderson, Rob MacIntyre and Amie Ries reported that eleven-year-old female
Nora b/r G/*V, here for at least the seventh year, paired with an unidentified male. Four eggs
were laid, three hatched, and two females and a male were banded in June 2007.
First year nesting attempted: 1993 Total young produced: 38.
13. SP-NSP King Plant, Bayport, Washington County, Minnesota (aka: Xcel Energy King Plant,
Oak Park Heights, Washington County MN). Occupied since 1990. Bob Anderson reports
that 8-year-old female Belinda b/g W/E, here for the fourth year, paired with 12-year-old
young were banded, three females and a male.
First year nesting attempted: 1990 Total young produced: 45.
14. SP-NSP Prairie Island, Goodhue County, Minnesota (aka Xcel Energy Prairie Island Plant,
Goodhue County, MN). Bob Anderson reports that 14-year-old female b/r 7/1, nesting here
since 1997, and an unidentified male, produced, two male young. At fourteen years of age in
2007, 7/1 is the oldest of the cliff-nesting females along the Mississippi.
First year nesting attempted: 1997 Total young produced: 33
15. SP-NSP Monticello Plant, Monticello, Wright County, Minnesota (aka Xcel Energy
Monticello Plant Wright County, MN). Dan Orr (NSP) and Bob Anderson report that at least
one young was produced at this site in 2007. Owing to equipment issues, no attempt was
made to band. It was not reported whether Camilla E/B was still present at this site.
First year nesting attempted: 1995 Total young produced: 41
16. SP-Great River Energy, Elk River, Sherburne County, Minnesota. New Site. Bob Anderson
reported that adult female 30/B; a 2002 fledge from Cleveland, Ohio paired with an
unidentified adult male. Three young, one female and two males were produced and banded
in 2007. The female had been grounded with a head injury in 2002 and was treated at The
Raptor Center. She was released at Mayo in Rochester, MN in October of 2002, attempted to
nest at Xcel Energy’s Sherco Plant in a lightening-destroyed nest box in early spring 2007,
and after failing there due to a washout in a rain storm, appeared at Great River Energy
where she succeeded.
First year nesting attempted: 2007 Total young produced: 3
17. SP-Minnesota Power and Light Boswell Energy Center, Cohasset, Itasca County, Minnesota.
As reported by Bob Anderson, similar to 2006, a pair of unidentified adults, female unbanded
and male banded b/g, were present. They produced four eggs, two hatched, and two male
young were banded.
First year nesting attempted: 1993 Total young produced: 46.
18. SP- Cargill Elevator, Red Wing, Goodhue County, Minnesota (aka Red Wing Grain Stack
House Red Wing, Goodhue County, MN). Bob Anderson reports that nine-year-old female
Husker b/r *M/D, here for at least the seventh year, paired with and unbanded male. Two
female young were banded.
First year nesting attempted: 2001 Total young produced: 18
19. SP-Greysolon Plaza (aka Duluth Hotel), Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota. Bob Anderson
and Julie O’Connor reported that female Amy b/g 82/C paired with an unbanded male. Four
young, three females and a male hatched from the four eggs that were laid. One of the
females, Kelly 96/C was found dead on the street at the end of July.
First year nesting attempted: 2003 Total young fledged from this site: 14.
20. SP-NSP High Bridge, St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota (aka: Xcel Energy Highbridge
Plant). Bob Anderson, Raptor Resource Project, reports that four-year-old female Athena b/g
01/D, paired with an unbanded male. They laid four eggs, hatched and fledged four young,
one male and three females. They were banded on June 26, 2007.
First year nesting attempted: 2000 Total young produced: 22
21. SP-Cargill Elevator, Lake City, Wabasha County, Minnesota (aka: Horizon Milling, Lake
City). Bob Anderson reports that peregrines nested here for the sixth year. Seven-year-old
male Gretch K/U, back for the sixth year, paired with six-year-old female Lolo 29/A, here for
the fifth year. Four eggs were laid, four hatched, and one male and three females were
banded.
First year nesting attempted: 2002 Total young produced: 19
22. SP-State Prison/University Bridge, St. Cloud, Stearns County, Minnesota. For the sixth year,
a pair of peregrines nested in a box on the water tower at the state prison. The female is sixyear-old
Rayne b/g 1/*W, fledged in 2001 at Norwest Financial, Bloomington, Minnesota
and the male is six-year-old Rocky b/g 84/H, fledged in 2001 at NSP King, Bayport,
Minnesota. Three young fledged, one male and two females, unbanded due to access
restrictions.
First year nesting attempted: 1994 Total young produced: 16
23. SP-Champion International Paper Mill, Sartell, Stearns County, Minnesota. For the fifth year,
Rick Fern, plant safety supervisor, watched the peregrines at this site. Returning for the third
11

year was six-year-old female Copper b/g *7/C, fledged in 2001 at Fargo, North Dakota, and
her half-brother, four-year-old Dakotah b/g 78/P, fledged at Fargo in 2003. On May 25, three
young were banded, all female. The adult female at this site is extremely defensive, striking
pedestrians at a bridge about 3 blocks from the nest box. Signs were once again posted on the
bridge to inform the public about this behavior, and a notice was published in the local
newspaper.
First year nesting attempted: 1999 Total young produced: 9
24. SP-Homer Cliff, Homer, Winona County, Minnesota. New site. Non-breeding falcons had
been observed at this site in 2005 and 2006. In 2007, unidentified adults produced three
young, two females and a male. On June 15, 2007, Bob Anderson banded the young.
First year nesting attempted: 2007 Total young produced: 3
25. SP-Charity Bluff, John Latsch State Park, Winona County, Minnesota. An unidentified adult
male with only a b/g band on the left leg and an unbanded adult female nested in a new ledge
on the cliff face of this bluff. Observations by Fallon from February through May indicated
that the birds were nesting on the center bluff, Hope, but this was incorrect. Climbers Joel
Sniewolski and Jim Mussell climbed Hope Bluff in mid-June but the adults were not
observed in the area and it was believed that the pair had failed. When Fallon made a visit to
the cliff 10 days later, she discovered the pair on territory on the northernmost cliff Charity,
with a recently fledged female young in hot pursuit of the adult female, who had fresh prey in
her talons.
First year nesting attempted: 1986 Total young produced: 14
26. SP-Great Spirit Bluff, La Crescent, Houston County, Minnesota. In 2007, unidentified adults
produced three young, one female and two males, that were banded on June 13, 2007 by Bob
Anderson.
First year nesting attempted: 2005 Total young produced: 10
27. SP-Blatnik Bridge, Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota/Superior, Douglas County,
Wisconsin. Dave Evans reports that an unbanded adult male was paired with a new female,
black *B/8, fledged in 2004 from Mount McRae, Ontario. The pair fledged at least one
young, unbanded due to traffic safety considerations.
First year nesting attempted: 1995 Total young produced: 7
Special Note: Each year, Minnesota North Shore peregrines are banded with the essential and
much appreciated help of expert climbers from the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center,
Finland, Minnesota. This year, the climbers and others that helped at the North Shore sites were
(alphabetically): Dave Evans, Dave Graf, Peter Harris, Brad Johnson, Jim Mussell, Peter
Smerud, Joel Sneiwolski, Mike Steffes, Tom Wahlstrom, Joe Walewski, and Lori Walewski.
12

28. SP-Crow Creek, Lake County, Minnesota. This site, was occupied regularly by the pre-DDT
peregrines and again since 2003. Seven-year-old Wally b/g P/R, fledged at Palisade Head in
2000, paired with an unbanded female. Two young, a male and female, were banded on June
8 and fledged successfully by the end of the month. Dave Evans identified male Wally b/g
P/R in 2002 at Silver Cliff, about two miles from Crow Creek.
First year nesting attempted: 2003 Total young produced: 8
29. SP-Corundum Point cliff, Split Rock State Park, Lake County, Minnesota. As in former
years, the adults are very cautious, usually soaring high above when disturbed. Dave Evans
again spend many hours trying to identify the pair and was able to determine that an
unknown adult male and female were using the usual nest ledge on the southeast face of the
cliff. Four young were banded in early June, and one male and three females fledged in late
June.
First year nesting attempted: 1997 Total young produced: 24
30. SP-Gold Rock Point, Split Rock State Park, Lake County, Minnesota. New site. In late
October 2007, a report from a scuba dive charter captain of a pair that had been observed for
most of the summer was relayed to Jackie Fallon. At least one young was reported to have
reached fledging age.
First year nesting attempted: 2007 Total young produced: 1
31. SP-North Shore Mining, Silver Bay, Lake County, Minnesota. Dave Evans report that a new
male, six-year-old Jean b/g 7/*L, fledged in 2001 from Corundum Point cliff was paired with
an unbanded adult female. The pair nested in an old raven’s nest on an old loader unit, as the
original pair did in 1999-2003. Two young fledged in early July, one male and one female.
Male Jean had previously nested in 2006 just a few miles north at the Pink Cove territory.
First year nesting attempted: 1999 Total young produced: 23
32. SP-Palisade Head cliff, Tettegouche State Park, Lake County, Minnesota. According to Dave
Evans, a pair of adults, most likely the same pair as in 2005, nested on a ledge that was the
original ledge used in 1988. The male is banded with a silver USFWS band only and the
adult female was unbanded. Three eggs were laid and one female hatched and fledged
successfully in late June. State park DNR staff continue to post the area to prevent
disturbances to the nesting birds at this popular rock climbing site throughout the nesting and
fledging season. This site has the highest natural production of any site in Minnesota.
First year nesting attempted: 1988 Total young produced: 53
33. SP-Birch Bay, Lake County, Minnesota. Peter Harris reported a pair of birds nesting on a
cliff in a raven nest. For the second year, the male was black band *5/4, a 2002 fledge from
Squaw Bay, Ontario and the female was black band *X/7, 2003 fledge from Squaw Bay,
Ontario. Three young were banded as female at ~ 14 days of age, and all three fledged
13

successfully in early July. Over 20 Wolf Ridge ELC staff and friends observed the banding at
this site on a perfect summer day on the North Shore, as we continued the education efforts
of the project.
First year nesting attempted: 2006 Total young produced: 6
34. SP-Kennedy Creek cliff, Lake County, Minnesota. Dave Evans helped keep track of this site.
The male is six-year-old Chris b/g P/V, fledged in 2001 at Castle Cliff, Castle Danger,
Minnesota, here for the fourth year, and an unbanded adult female. Four eggs were laid; three
male and one female young were banded in late June. The four young fledged in early July
and were observed by Fallon to be in the area in mid-August.
First year nesting attempted: 1995 Total young produced: 15
35. SP-Manitou cliff, northeast of Little Marais, Lake County, Minnesota. Dave Evans reports
that five-year-old female Susan b/g 9/*2, fledged in 2002 at Corundum Point, is once again
paired with an unknown adult male. The property owners once again permitted access to the
site, but the pair had moved to a new location on the cliff face. On banding day, it was
determined that the cliff face was too fragile and the risk too great for both climber and
chicks. Fallon returned to the site on July 16 and saw 2 young flying in the sky.
First year nesting attempted: 1999 Total young produced: 16
36. SP-1 mile NE of Grand Marais, Intersection of Highway 61 and Highway 7, Lake County,
Minnesota. New Site. Melissa Groves reported to Fallon in mid-July about a sighting of one
adult and two juvenile peregrines. Exact location of the eyrie was not made, but the area is
one that will be closely monitored in 2008.
First year nesting attempted: 2007 Total young produced: 2
37. SP-Hat Point Cliff, northeast of Grand Portage, Cook County, Minnesota. In mid-August,
Fallon observed an adult unbanded male in the general location of the cliff. Two young were
seen to be flying in the same bay. No further information is currently available on the
identification of another adult or other possible young produced.
First year nesting attempted: 1996 Total young produced: 14
38. LE-Minnesota Power Hibbard Plant, Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota. New Site. An
unidentified pair of falcons laid four eggs. These eggs failed to hatch.
First year nesting attempted: 2007 Total young produced: 0
39. LE-Space Tower, State Fairgrounds, St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. Fallon identified
two-year-old male Sena b/g 94/N, 2005 hatch from StoraEnso Kimberly Mill, Kimberly,
Wisconsin and five-year-old female Marcia b/g 42/B, 2002 hatch from NSP Monticello, MN
14

in March. Three eggs were laid at the Space Tower but did not hatch. Pairs have occupied
this site sporadically since 1988, but no pair has produced any live young to date.
First year nesting attempted: 1998 Total young produced: 0
40. LE-I-494 Dakota Bridge, South St. Paul, Washington County, Minnesota. Fallon and Pedar
Thompson observed a pair of birds present at the bridge in early February. For the second
year, ten-year-old male MNDOT b/r *D/C, 1997 fledged from Mendota Bridge in Ft.
Snelling State Park and five-year-old female, Trudy b/g 41/B, 2002 fledge from NSP
Monticello, Monticello, MN were present. The pair attempted to nest in a center alcove on
the east side of the bridge but failed shortly after incubation began. The alcoves were only
~5-6 feet above the ground and the nest was most likely lost to predation. Even though the
failure was early in the incubation period, the pair did not appear to re-nest. The pair
remained on territory through the summer. Plans are to place a box on the eastbound bridge
section when construction of the bridge is completed in the future.
First year nesting attempted: 2003 Total young produced: 1
41. LE-NSP SHERCO Plant, Becker, Sherburne County, Minnesota (aka Xcel Energy Plant
Becker, Sherburne County, MN). Dan Orr, Xcel biologist, and Bob Anderson report that
lightening destroyed the next box and killed the incubating female. Another falcon, 30/B,
attempted to nest in the detritus of the destroyed next box and failed when the site was
washed out in a heavy rain. This female turned up and nested successfully at the Great River
Energy site.
First year nesting attempted: 1992 Total young produced: 38
42. LE-Milwaukee Railroad Bridge/Hastings Cliff/Highway 61 Bridge, Hastings, Dakota
County, Minnesota. For the second year, six-year-old female, Penny b/g 27/A, fledged in
2001 from NSP Sherco, Becker, Minnesota and four-year-old male, Charlie b/g 64/P, fledged
in 2003 from the Cargill Elevator, Red Wing, Minnesota attempted to nest in the area. This
season, the pair attempted to nest in a nest box that was installed on a cliff in 1988 by Pat
Redig, Bud Tordoff, and several MFA members. The pair appeared to lose the clutch when
the young were expected to hatch. The pair did not re-nest and remained on territory
throughout the summer. The box in which the pair laid the eggs had only been used once
before, in 2001. Todd Haarstick and Tordoff assisted with valuable observations throughout
the season.
First year nesting attempted: 2001 Total young produced: 5
43. LE-Wacouta Bluff, 5 miles south of Red Wing,Goodhue County, Red Wing, Minnesota.
New Site. From February through June, an unidentified pair of adult peregrines was on
territory. Early observations indicated that the pair was incubating, but by early May it
appeared that the pair had failed. The adult male was on territory through July, but the female
was not seen after early June.
15

First year nesting attempted: 2007 Total young produced: 0
44. LE- Mendota Bridge, Fort Snelling State Park, Dakota County, Minnesota. For the ninth
year, ten-year-old female P.W. b/r *5/V, fledged in 1997 from the Ford Parkway bridge,
Minneapolis, was observed on territory, paired for the first year with three-year-old Chandler
b/g D/28, 2004 hatch from the Norwest Financial Center, Bloomington. The pair was seen to
be nesting on a new arch on the bridge, and feeding of young in late May, plus the discovery
of one un-hatched egg below the eyrie arch. However, behavior of the pair dramatically
changed by the first week in June and a visit to the nest site by Mark Martell of Audubon of
Minnesota and MNDOT crewmembers indicated that young had hatched but were no longer
present at the nest site. The pair remained on territory throughout the summer.
First year nesting attempted: 1996 Total young produced: 26
45. LE-Superior Shores, Rocky Point, Two Harbors, Lake County, Minnesota. Dave Evans
reported nesting activity at this site. For the second year, an adult unbanded male was present
with an adult female, banded b/g ?/E (last year’s female was Phoenix b/g 96/E, fledged in
2003 from North Shore Mining, Silver Bay, Minnesota). The first nest failed in late May,
with all three eggs disappearing over a two-week period. Jim Mussell and Joel Sniewolski
climbed the cliff in June to remove the sharp rocks that most likely caused failure at this site
the past two seasons. We hope the changes to the eyrie will result in live chicks in 2008.
First year nesting attempted: 2006 Total young produced: 2
46. LE-Taconite Harbor, Lake County, Minnesota. A pair of peregrines were observed nesting
on the harbor side on an island that is ~200 meters from land. An adult b/g female and a yearold
unbanded SY male nested and three eggs were found in late May. By mid July, when the
banding team arrived, a single egg was found and removed since it was past any possible
hatching date. The pair stayed on territory throughout the summer months, but remained very
elusive, preventing reading of the female’s band. Discussions are underway with staff from
the Taconite Harbor Electric Plant to put a nest box up on a tower to assist with the
monitoring of this site. Tom Wahlstrom, MN DNR helped us with access to the island for
banding and monitoring activities.
First year nesting attempted: 2004 Total young produced: 5
47. NB-Midwest Plaza, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Adult female b/r *E/X,
fledged in 1998 in Des Moines, Iowa was found on territory in downtown Minneapolis in
early February. Observations indicated that the female was occasionally visited by male
Younger b/g 04/N, currently nesting on the Multifoods Tower. No indication of the bigamous
behavior present in 2006 appeared to occur and the behavior of the female indicated that
there were no eggs or young in the immediate area. The sole female was on territory
throughout the summer.
It was reported by Herb Kistler of the site that an adult peregrine was extremely defensive to
his presence on the rooftop on August 13-14. A complete survey of the building resulted in
16

no eggs or evidence of young, but we are continuing to observe the site and to try to
determine what is causing the defensive behavior so late in the season. Observations were
made possible by access granted to the adjoining Medical Arts roof where observations
could be done of the Multifoods Tower and Midwest Plaza sites simultaneously.
First year nesting attempted: 2004 Total young produced: 5
48. NB-3M Water Tower, Arcade and East 7th Street, St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota.
From February through May, the breeding pair of adult peregrines from site #10 used this
site in addition to the Bremer Tower. In late May, two-year-old Rick b/g 45/N, 2005 hatch
from NSP Prairie Island, MN was seen on territory with an unknown adult female for a
two-week time period. No birds were seen on territory through the summer months, despite
regular observations by various 3M employees. Melissa Babich and Bud Tordoff also
watched this site throughout the nesting season.
First year nesting attempted: 2006 Total young produced: 2
49. NB-Flint Hills Refinery, Rosemount, Dakota County, Minnesota. For the third year, an
unknown pair of adult peregrines was on territory at the refinery. In late July, refinery
employee Don Kern notified us of extremely defensive behavior by the pair towards the staff
throughout the summer. Observations began but clear banding status or age of the pair was
not made and no eggs or evidence of hatching was found. We are continuing with
observations at the time of this report. We are working with a nearby facility to install a
nesting box to encourage the falcons to nest in the area.
First year nesting attempted: 2005 Total young produced: 0
50. NB-Queens Bluff, Great River Bluffs State Park, Winona County, Minnesota. An unbanded
adult female and three-year-old Cranberry b/g 17/N, a 2004 fledge from Dairyland
Cooperative, Genoa, Wisconsin, nested in a cave eyrie that has been used since 2000. When
the banding team climbed into the eyrie, it was discovered that the pair had a fresh scrape but
no evidence of eggs or chicks. Further observations did not produce evidence of incubation
51. NB-Bong Bridge, Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota/Superior, Douglas County,
Wisconsin. Dave Evans reports that twelve-year-old male Trevor b/r K/*A, fledged in 1995
from a cliff at Kennedy Creek, Minnesota, was paired with four-year-old female black *Y/6,
fledged in 2003 from Caribou Island, Ontario. The pair of birds were seen at the bridge in the
late winter and early spring, but appeared to move to a nearby box that was placed on a
smokestack at the nearby Hibbard Plant. (See # 31 above).
First year nesting attempted: 1994 Total young produced: 8
52. NB-Castle Cliff, Castle Danger, Lake County, Minnesota. Mike Steffes and Dave Evans
reported on this pair for the sixth season. The pair remained very elusive during the typical
nesting months of April and May and did not exhibit any nesting behavior. No juveniles were
observed in the area through the fledging season, and it is believed that the pair was on
territory but not successful.
First year nesting attempted: 2001 Total young produced: 20
53. NB-Pink Cove, Beaver Bay, Lake County, Minnesota. Dave Evans reports that a secondyear
unbanded male was on territory with an unbanded adult female. The pair was seen
investigating the usual nesting sites on the cliff face, but did not appear to lay eggs or raise
any young. The pair remained on territory throughout the summer.
First year nesting attempted: 1996 Total young produced: 12
54. NB-Finn Church, two miles northeast of Tofte, Cook County, Minnesota. Fallon saw a pair
of birds at the site in late April. The adult female is unbanded, and the male is four-year-old
Chuck b/g 81/P, fledged in 2003 from North Shore Mining, Silver Bay. This is the third year
at this site for the male. The pair remained on territory through the summer but behavior by
the adults indicated that nesting did not occur. This cliff face is very fragile and failures often
occur, sometimes with the entire eyrie collapsing into Lake Superior during incubation or
brooding.
First year nesting attempted: 1993 Total young produced: 17
WISCONSIN
Peregrines along the eastern Lake Michigan lakefront, in the vicinity of Milwaukee, are
diligently monitored and managed by Greg Septon who provided the following information
about peregrine success in 2007.
55. SP-Miller Brewery, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. An unbanded adult female,
believed to be the same female as last year, paired with Herbert (b/g) 80/N produced at the
WE Energies Valley Power Plant in Milwaukee in 2004 and here for the second year. Four
eggs were laid and two young of each sex were banded on May 25, 2007.
56. SP-Froedtert Malt, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin (Now International Malting
Co.). Greg Septon reported that the adult male here appeared to be fifteen-year-old Leopold
b/r C/D, a captive-produced peregrine released at Pleasant Prairie, WI in 1992, and present
here since 1994. The adult female was Raynie b/r A/*H, a 1995 fledge from Chicago. This
was Raynie’s 10th year at this site. From three eggs, two females hatched on May 24 and
were banded on June 1, 2007.
57. SP-Firstar Center, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin (Now US Bank – Milwaukee).
Greg Septon reported that this site had remained unproductive since Sibella (20V) ended her
15-year presence here in ‘03. Peregrines have been observed here regularly but no nesting
18

attempt was made in ‘06. After an absence of three years, peregrines returned to the US Bank
building. Replacing Sibella was Jean (b/g) 19/C. Jean hatched on June 3, 2005 at the
Evanston Library nest site in Evanston, IL. Her adult mate is banded but has not yet been
identified. Four eggs were laid, four hatched, and two of each sex were banded on May 31,
2007.
58. SP-We Energies Oak Creek Power Plant, Oak Creek, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Greg
Septon & Rose Dehli reported that Atlanta (b/r) L/*C, a female produced in 1996 at the
Pulliam site in Green Bay was here for her 9th year paired with male Scott (b/g) M/Y, a
falcon produced in 2000 at the Froedtert Malt Complex, here for his second year. Three eggs
were laid, two hatched, and one of each sex was banded on May 31, 2007.
59. SP-We Energies Port Washington Generating Station, Port Washington, Ozaukee County,
Wisconsin. “Flaps” b/r 8/*T, a 1998 Green Bay wild-produced male that nested here from
2000 – 06, was injured in a territorial battle this spring. After the first battle, he was rehabbed
and released to the wild, only to be injured again. He was returned for additional rehab and
later died. On March 22nd, Greg Septon was able to read the band on the new adult male. He
is “Ives” (b/g) 78/N, produced in 2004 at the Edgewater site in Sheboygan, WI. The adult
female is once again “Icon” (b/g) 50/D here for her second year. Icon was produced in 2004
at the LTV Steel site in Cleveland, OH. On May 24, contractors at this site found the
desiccated remains of “Diane” (b/g) 79/D on the plant roof. Diane was a female peregrine
produced in 2004 at the Kewaunee, WI site. With all the territorial skirmishes at PWGS this
spring, she was likely the loser in one of these battles. Four eggs were laid, yielding two of
each sex that were banded on June 14, 2007.
60. SP-WPL Edgewater Generating Station, Sheboygan, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. Greg
Septon and Joe McClurg report the adult female Liberty b/r E/*D was found dead in late June
of 2006. An adult female wearing a silver USFWS band on her right leg replaced Liberty.
There was no information on the adult male; he was not identified last year either but was
known to wear a b/g band. Three eggs were laid between April 6 – 10 and one female was
banded on May 31, 2007
61. SP-Busch Agricultural Resources Complex, Manitowoc, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin.
Greg Septon and Rise’ Sieben reported the adult female here was six-year-old b/g 7/*U
produced in 2001 at the New Center in Detroit, MI. This was her third year at this site. The
adult male was seen to be unbanded. Five eggs were laid, five hatched and five young, three
females and two males were banded on May 29th, 2007. One female young, Lucy b/g N/29,
was found on June 19th with an injured wing; she later died at a rehabilitation facility.
62. SP-WPS Pulliam Power Plant, Green Bay, Brown County, Wisconsin. Greg Septon reported
that the adult female here is once again four-year old Beth b/g 25/B. She was wild-produced
in 2003 at the Midwest Generation Power Plant in Waukegan, IL. The adult male has been
identified as b/g 45/H a 2001 wild-produced bird from the Grand Haven Lake, Sims Plant
site in Grand Haven, MI. Band numbers of both adults were read this year from the new web
cam at this site. Four eggs were laid and four males were banded on May 29, 2007.
19

63. SP-We Energies Pleasant Prairie Power Plant, Pleasant Prairie, Kenosha County, Wisconsin.
Greg Septon and Bob Reske reported that the adult female here was nine-year-old Breezer b/r
*R/*2 produced in 1998 at the U.S. Steel site in Gary, IN. This was Breezer’s 9th year at P4.
The adult male was Duke b/r 1/*P produced in 1998 at Milwaukee’s Landmark on the Lake
apartment building. Four eggs were laid between March 13 -20 and two female young were
banded on May 14, 2007. Female Breezer laid two eggs at age one, four her second year,
five in 2001, 2002, 2003, four in 2004, five in 2005, five again in 2006 and four in 2007.
64. SP-Racine County Courthouse, Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin. Greg Septon reported
that the adult female here was once again six-year-old Lily b/g 56/A hatched in 2001 at the
Firstar Bank in Cedar Rapids, IA. The b/g banded male was not identified. They laid four
eggs and two females and one male were banded on May 25, 2007.
65. SP-Cargill Malt Complex, Jefferson County, Jefferson, Wisconsin (now Renew Energy LLC
Complex). Greg Septon reported that Pete Dempseys, a plant employee, first reported a pair
of peregrines here on March 13th. On May 3rd, Greg visited the site and found Smokey (b/g)
82/A, in 2003 from the Edgewater site in Sheboygan, WI. This is her 4th year at this site. The
adult male is Ceptyn (b/g) N/Y, a 2002 wild-produced bird from We Energies Port
Washington Generating Station. This is only the second time Greg has found a clutch of 6
eggs. The last time was in 2006 when 6 eggs were laid at the Edgewater Generating Station
site in Sheboygan, WI. Interestingly, they were laid by “Liberty” (b/r) E/*D -- Smokey’s
mother! Four females and 1 male were banded on June 16, 2007.
66. SP-WPS Weston Power Plant Rothschild, Marathon County, Wisconsin. Greg Septon and
Tom McLean reported an unbanded female paired with a b/g adult male, same as last year.
Four eggs were laid and one female and two males were banded on May 29, 2007. On June
11th, Dave Polster, a Weston employee, found the adult male, with a projectile injury to his
right wing, on the ground. He was identified as Ozzy b/g K/Z and was permanently disabled.
67. SP-StoraEnso Kimberly Mill, Kimberly, Outagamie County, Wisconsin. Greg Septon and
Bob Vanthiel reported that five-year-old Louise b/g V/U hatched in 2002 at the Ameren UE
Labadie Power Station in St. Louis, MO paired with an unidentified male. The pair at this
site lost their clutch last year when a rainstorm flooded their nest site. Four eggs were laid in
the new nest box placed there last summer. Four young, one female and three males, were
banded on June 5, 2007.
68. SP-Thilmany Mill, Kaukauana, Outagamie County, Wisconsin. New Site. Last spring an
unidentified adult male and an immature female identified as “Nora” (b/g) P/76 were present
at this site but no eggs were laid. Nora was wild-produced in 2005 at the Graysolon Plaza in
Duluth, MN. This year a pair of falcons arrived on site during the first week of March
according to Tony Giordano and egg laying was documented in April by Greg Schuh. During
banding, Greg Septon set up his scope on the roof near the nest box and was able to ID the
adult male as Ian b/g 71/N, a falcon produced at We Energies Port Washington Generating
Station in 2004. Four eggs were laid, three hatched and two females and one male were
banded on June 14, 2007.
20

69. SP-Kewaunee Nuclear Power Plant, Kewaunee, Kewaunee County, Wisconsin. Craig Long
reported that falcons were present at this site in 2007, and in late June were observed to be
tending a single fledged youngster. Adults were never identified and the juvenile was not
banded.
70. SP-Alliant Columbia Generating Station, Pacific Township, Columbia County, Wisconsin.
Scott Wilson reported that on July 6th he witnessed two adult falcons with five young. Two
of the young were being fed a pigeon on the boiler roof. When Greg Septon visited this site
on July 19th he observed at least 3 young at one time and 2 others tucked away on the other
side of the plant about 10 minutes later so its likely all five young were still around. The
adults were observed, but not identified.
71. SP-Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad Bridge, Prescottk, Pierce County, Wisconsin. Jenn
Veith first observed peregrines at this site in 2006. Jackie Fallon and Bud Tordoff who
monitored the site this year documented nesting at the site. This nest site is situated on the
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad lift bridge that crosses the Mississippi River at
Prescott, WI. In 2007, the peregrines nested on the east portion of the bridge so they are
being counted as a Wisconsin pair. Two young fledged here but because of dangers
associated with accessing the nest site, they were not banded. Bud Tordoff identified the
adult male as Butler (b/g) 19/N who was produced in 2004 at the Cargill Elevator nest site in
Red Wing, MN.
Special note: Peregrine nest sites on cliffs and powerplant stacks along the section of the
Mississippi River between Monticello, Minnesota and LaCrosse, Wisconsin, as well as sites
on both side of the river in Iowa are monitored and managed by Bob Anderson and the
to the personnel at the Shedd Aquarium, USFWS, Lincoln Park Zoo, Flint Creek, and SOAR.
They have provided assistance to the program by helping monitor sites, band & take blood
samples from eyasses, and treat injured birds. The web cams at the Midwest Generation Plant
and Evanston Public Library were great successes this year as always.
108. SP-Jackson Street Prison, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. This is the tenth year for a nest
here, again in an inaccessible area. Both adults were identified this year, the male being sevenyear-old
from Minneapolis (1997). Note on adult id: Names not confused, the male was banded as a
female.
This year, two young were visible. One female was grounded on 6/21, banded and released. S/14
was grounded later the same day and retrieved by Animal Control and went into rehab with
SOAR. She was released on 8/14 in Lockport, IL.
Kelli was observed perching on the building. Kelli was present on March 25th during the early
hours but later in the day Ballistic (b/g 69/C) was present. Periodically after that Ballistic and/or
Hops were seen on the building but no more eggs were laid. The initial egg was retrieved on
April 24th. Later during the nesting season, Ballistic and Hops were observed on the church but
no attempt to renest was made. Kelliwatt was found dead on a nearby rooftop in July though she
had clearly been dead for some time.
118. LE-Belmont / Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, Cook County, llinois. This is a new site for
2006/2007. The fall of 2006, a pair of peregrines began using the ledges of a building near
Belmont and Lake Shore Drive. On November 21 2006 the female was identified as Ballistic b/g
69/C (Cleveland OH 2005). The male was identified only as far as having a b/g band. No reports
were given of this pair again until then end of April (2007). Apparently 2 eggs were laid in a
gutter and lost during a rainstorm on 4/2/07. Ballistic was reported at the end of March over at
St. Michael’s.
119. NB-Lawndale, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Mary Hennen reported that two b/g banded
adults have been present and defensive of an old tower in the Lawndale neighborhood for the
adults were identified as male Dave b/g 14/K (Chicago, IL 2001) and female Nitz b/g s/*Y
(Milwaukee, WI 2001).
120. NB-Lakeview, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. The ledge used by the peregrines at this site
is not accessible or visible other than from watching from the street. A pair of peregrines was
observed during April and May of 2007. No evidence suggestive of chicks was obtained.
121. NB-Hyde Park, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Mary Hennen reports that two adults were
present, Magnolia (bl 22R) here for fourteen years. The male was not identified. As in previous
years (2005, 2006) they nested in a gutter. Examination of the gutter or available nest boxes did
not reveal eggs or chicks.
28

122. NB-Fermilab, Batavia, IL. New site. A pair of peregrines is utilizing the ledges on the main
building at Fermilab. No nesting is confirmed but both adults have been identified. The female is
Chicago 2005.)
123. NB-Field Museum. New site. A pair of peregrines has been seen this year using the ledges
on the Field Museum. The ledges thought to be the nest ledge is inaccessible and without an
avenue for viewing. Copulation was observed in late March and again in May. The peregrines
were absent from the site throughout the majority of April and returned near the end of the
month. Nesting was not confirmed. The adult male is unbanded and the female has been
identified partially as b/g 73/?.
[Bloomington, IL. A single bird was observed throughout the winter of 2006/2007. A nest box is
available but not used. The single bird was last observed in early March 2007.]
[96th Street and Skyway Bridge, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Location of eyrie not known.
One unbanded immature was picked up by Animal Control on 6/19/07 but died during the night.
The bird was found in the neighborhood that we believe this pair frequents and it was too early
for it to be a migrant. No information about the adults]
INDIANA
John Castrale, IN DNR, collected the Indiana peregrine information. Banding of 23
chicks occurred at 7 sites in 2007. Comparatively, during 2006, 13 sites were active in Indiana
and 12 sites were successful in producing 30 young falcons; 25 chicks were banded. Falcon cams
can be viewed at: http://www.aep.com/go/FalconCam (Fort Wayne),
http://blogs.indystar.com/falconblog/ (Indianapolis) and
http://www.nisource.com/enviro/falcon.asp (Wheatfield).
124. SP-One Summit Square, Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana. Thirteen -year-old female
Freedom U/*8, twelfth year nesting at this site, paired again with twelve-year-old male
Roosevelt R/*4, his eleventh year here. One young of each sex was banded on June 15, 2007.
125. SP-Cargill, Portage, Indiana. The pair that nests at nearby Bethlehem Steel and the Bailly
Power Plant used the nest box at this site in 2003. However, this year, a new pair consisting of an
unbanded female paired with 2-year-old male b/g C/02 from Wheatfiled, IN and produced three
female and one male young. Banding occurred on June 6, 2007.
126. SP-Market Tower, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. John Castrale reported that
fourteen-year-old male Kinney 7/*3, here for the thirteenth year, paired for the sixth year with
29

nine-year-old Chantal *B/*C (aka KathyQ). This site is under camera surveillance. Four young,
2 male s and two females were banded on May 21st. Both female young died in building
collisions in the first weeks after fledging. Over the 13 years of nesting here, 46 young have
fledged, a remarkable 3.5 per year, all sired by Kinney 7/*3.
127. SP-Tower Building, South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana. John Castrale reported that
female Guinevere 79/E, banded here in 2003 as an adult, paired with eight-year-old male Zephyr
b/r *9/*A, here since 2003. Three females and one male were banded here on May 23, 2007.
128. SP-U.S. Steel (sinter plant), Gary, Lake County, Indiana. Eight-year-old female Crystal
X/*K, here for the seventh year, paired with a new, unbanded male. Three females and one male
chick were banded on June 6, 2007.
129. SP-BP Amoco, Whiting, Lake County, Indiana. This is the fourth year for this site, but the
old box was moved due to construction activities. John Castrale reported that four-year-old
female Nancy b/g 5/*4 wild-produced in Waukegon, IL in 2002, paired with an unidentified b/g
male, as in previous years. One female and two male chicks were banded on June 19, 2007.
130. SP-US Steel (old coke plant), Gary, Lake County, Indiana. A pair of unidentified adults laid
three eggs in a gutter at this site in 2006 and a nest box was erected in the fall. The following
spring, it was not used, but a pair was found nesting nearby on an I-beam of a building being
demolished. The 2-year-old female b/g 65/A paired with a male wearing a purple band. Two
female young were produced and banded on June 19, 2007.
131. SP-Inland Steel (aka Mittal Steel – Indiana Harbor East), East Chicago, Lake County,
Indiana. For probably the 13th year, a pair has nested at this site, but the nest box is now
inaccessible. This year’s pair is likely the same birds as in 2006, a b/g (on the left leg) banded
female and male b/g 40/P, a four-year-old from Michigan City, IN, was positively identified for
the first time. On June 19, three nearly fledged young were wing-flapping at the box opening.
132. SP-Inland Steel (aka Mittal Steel – Indiana Harbor East), lime plant, East Chicago, Lake
County, Indiana. New Site. Plant workers indicated that a pair laid three eggs and fledged one
chick here in 2006. John Castrale visited the nest site that consisted of an inaccessible outside
building ledge covered with several inches of powdery lime dust. The adults consisted of an
unbanded female and three-year-old male b/g 58/N from Whiting, IN. Four eggs were laid, three
hatched, and two fledged in mid-June.
133. SP-NIPSCO Schahfer Plant, Wheatfield, Jasper County, Indiana. A pair, not identified this
year, has nested here for ten years, but in 2007 they chose a site other than the smokestack nest
box. At least three chicks were produced, but one fell from the nest box on June 1, prior to
fledging. Two others were observed being tended by the adults on June 6 away from the nest
box.
134. LE-NIPSCO Bailly Plant / Mittal Bethlehem Steel / Cargill, Porter, Porter County, Indiana.
A pair consisting of Barb b/r E/*L and Bailly b/r 4/9 has been nesting for the previous 11 years
at several locations in this area. They were not identified in 2007, but nesting activity was
30

suggested on a blast furnace at Bethlehem Steel in early April and 2 recently abandoned eggs
were discovered on April 11.
135. LE-NIPSCO Plant, Michigan City, LaPorte County, Indiana. Twelve-year-old male Uncle
Billy b/r 3/*B, here for the twelfth year, paired again with nine-year-old Cloud Dancer b/r
*B/*G, eight years at this site. Four eggs were laid but none were known to have hatched.
136. NB-Southside Landfill / IPL Stout (Harding St.) Plant, Indianapolis, Marion County,
Indiana. Although the adults, an unbanded female and eleven-year-old Orion b/r L/*8, appear to
be the same as in 2006 and were present at or near the nest box through June, no evidence of
nesting was found.
137. NB-Cline Avenue at Lake Michigan, East Chicago, Lake County, Indiana. Nesting has
occurred under this roadway for the previous 18 years. This year, twelve-year-old Laurie b/r
E/*H, here since 2000, and an unbanded male were observed sporadically throughout the season.
A strong-flying juvenile was perched near the nest site on June 19, but it could have fledged
from an adjacent territory.
No activity was reported for the following Indiana sites in 2007:
[Mittal Steel - Indiana Harbor West, East Chicago, Lake County, Indiana]
OHIO
Dave Scott, Ohio DNR, collected the Ohio peregrine information.
In summary: Division of Wildlife staff and volunteers monitored 23 territorial pairs of
peregrine falcons around Ohio during 2007. Eggs were produced at 22 sites and during 24
nesting attempts (2 attempts each at the Hilliard Road Bridge & I-480 Bridge sites). In 2007, 19
nesting attempts were successful, both in terms of hatching young and fledging young falcons.
All nesting attempts at Columbus (State Office Tower), Lakewood (Hilliard Road Bridge), and
Springfield (Tecumseh Building) were unsuccessful. More than 76 eggs were produced in Ohio
this year; however, please note that actual counts or estimates were unavailable for 4 nesting
attempts. We believe 57 eggs hatched in 2007; we were able to access and band 53 young
falcons from these nests. Assuming the late nests fledge successfully, Ohio falcon nests will have
fledged 56 young in 2007 (~2.95 young per successful nest), down slightly from last year’s 3.33
young per successful nest.
138. SP-Commodore Perry Motor Inn, Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. Dave Scott and Bill Roshak,
are in the works to trap this bird and remove him from the site, permanently.
MISSOURI
162. SP-Commerce Tower, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. Debra Burns, Missouri
Department of Conservation, reports on Commerce Tower, Kansas City, MO. Adults appeared to
be the same birds as previous years based on behavior, an unbanded male (this is his 3rd year)
and the same adult female (she has to be 9 years old now, still unable to see if banded). The pair
produced two chicks hatched sometime around May 11th. At least one chick fledged on June 8th,
ending up on the street below. The chick was placed back on the roof by a good Samaritan. A
visit by Debra Burns on June 15th revealed no activity. No other reports of birds on the ground
were received.
163. SP- Kansas City Power and Light, Hawthorn Plant, Kansas City, Jackson County. For the
past 2 years adult falcons (identity unknown) have been seen around a falcon box located on a
smoke stack (250 ft up), but we were unable to confirm nesting activity as reported by Deb
Burns. This year the adults exhibited aggressive behavior towards nearby workers and a juvenile
falcon was found on the ground below the smoke stake on June 11th. It was taken to a local
wildlife rehabilitation center where it died from its injuries. The center reported that the juvenile
was paralyzed when brought in. No other chicks were found in the box. Since we now know that
the pair is actively nesting, we are hoping to monitor the nest more frequently next year or set up
a camera.
164. SP-Interco Building, St. Louis County, Missouri. Mike Cooke reported that female M/27, a
2005-hacked bird from New Madrid Power Plant occupied this site in 2006 in juvenile plumage,
34

paired with an unidentified male (banding status uncertain). Three young were produced and
banded on May 14, 2007.
165. SP-AmerenUE, Labadie Power Station, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri. Mike Cooke
reported that, for the sixth year, a pair nested in a box on a catwalk 450 feet up on a smokestack.
Neither adult was identified. Two young, a male and a female, were banded on May 17, 2007.
166. SP-Washington University Medical School, St.Louis, Missouri. This site was first occupied
in 2006. Mike Cooke reported two female young banded on June 11, 2007. Adults were not
identified. Three young were produced, but the site was not accessible for banding. The two
banded young were captured when they grounded on their first flights.
167. SP-Ameren UE Sioux Power Plant, Portage de Sioux. New Site. One young male was
banded on June 14, 2007 after fledging. Site was unknown prior to that event and it is not known
how many young may have been present.
168. SP-AT&T (previously SWB) Downtown St. Louis. Mike Cooke reports three females were
banded at this site on July 11, 2007. The adults were unidentified. The female was unbanded.
Mike speculates that this was the downtown nest site that they have been unable to locate for the
previous 4 years. The nest box was last used in 2003.
KENTUCKY
Eight active pairs were monitored at 7 sites (the female at the Ghent Power Station was killed
and replaced after egg laying). Thirteen nestlings were banded at 5 sites, with nestlings fledged
from all 7 sites.
169. SP-KU Ghent Power Station, Ghent, Carroll Co., Kentucky. Shawchyi Vorisek and Budd
Veverka report that 7-year-old female, T.C. b/g 7/*8, fledged in 2000 from the LG&E Power
Plant in Bedford, paired with an unidentified adult male, laid 5 eggs in early April, but was killed
in the nest box in late April, and replaced by the subadult female, JoJo b/g 75/C, fledged in 2006
from the LG&E Power Plant in Bedford. The new pair produced 3 eggs, hatched one chick on
June 6, and fledged one female around July 17. This female was banded on July 2.
170. SP-LG&E (Trimble Co) Power Station, Bedford, Trimble Co., Kentucky. Shawchyi
Vorisek and Budd Veverka report that the 10-year-old breeding male, Greyfire b/r *K/V, hacked
at the Calloway Nuclear Plant in Fulton, MO in 1997, paired with a two-year-old unbanded
female, after the 9-year-old female, Natasha b/r *6/Y, was found dead last year. This pair
produced four eggs, hatched three young on April 22, and fledged two females and one male
around June 2. The young were banded on May 17. A new nest box was installed at the end of
the nesting season to accommodate construction at the site.
171. SP-LG&E Millcreek Power Station, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. Shawchyi Vorisek and Budd
Veverka report that an unidentified adult male paired with an unbanded female and are believed
to be the same territorial pair from 2006. This pair used the nest box installed last year, produced
35

three eggs, hatched two young on April 20, and fledged one male and one female around June 1.
The young were banded on May 17.
172. SP-EKPC Spurlock Power Station, Maysville, Mason Co., Kentucky. Shawchyi Vorisek
and Budd Veverka report that 3-year-old female, Cootes b/b 92/H, fledged in 2004 from the
Sheraton Hotel in Hamilton, Ontario, paired with a 3-year-old male, A.J. b/g 48/P, fledged from
the Miami Ft. Power Station in Cleves, OH in 2004. This pair was territorial to this site in 2006.
They used the nest box installed last year, produced 4 eggs, hatched all four eggs around May 4,
and fledged three males and one female around June 13. The young were banded on May 29.
173. SP-Combs-Hehl (I-275) Bridge, Campbell Co., Kentucky. Shawchyi Vorisek and Budd
Veverka report that for the second year, the 4-year-old female, Princess b/g 74/E, fledged in
2003 from the IPL Stout Plant in Indianapolis, IN, was paired with an adult male with a greenanodized
band on the right leg and a crippled left leg. They produced a clutch inside the top
beam of the westbound bridge, hatched at least two nestlings around May 8, and had at least one
nestling reach fledgling age and was observed outside of the nest on a beam, prior to fledging.
However, It is unknown if any of the young fledged or dispersed successfully, and no young
were banded at this site.
174. SP-Ohio River (Big 4 / Kennedy) Bridges, Jeffersonville, Indiana / Louisville, Jefferson
Co., Kentucky. Shawchyi Vorisek and Budd Veverka report that the adult female, Asha b/g
18/D, fledged in 2005 from the KU Ghent Power Station, was paired with an unbanded adult
male. This pair established a nest in a beam on the Big 4 railroad bridge, produced a clutch, and
hatched four young about April 27. Four nestlings attempted to fledge around June 7, but one
female nestling was injured, recovered from the shore, and euthanized by a rehabilitator. The
other three young fledged successfully.
175. SP-Milton-Madison (US 421) Bridge, Madison, Indiana/Milton, Trimble Co., Kentucky.
Shawchyi Vorisek and Budd Veverka report that the 10-year-old male, Asa Crane b/r *D/D,
hacked from the KU Ghent Power Station, was paired with an unbanded adult female. This pair
nested on a beam under the bridge deck, produced a clutch, and hatched four young around May
2. All four nestlings attempted to fledge around June 9, but three fledglings were recovered from
the Indiana shore of the Ohio River and were taken to a rehabilitator. Two fledglings were
treated for mild trichomoniasis, and all three were banded and released at the Leslie Morris Park
in Frankfort, KY on June 15. The fate of the fourth fledgling remains unknown.
176. NB-Jefferson Co., KY: LG&E Cane Run Station. In Early September, reports of a falcon at
the Cane Run Plant were confirmed. In fact, a pair was observed perched on the Unit 6
smokestack, and they exhibited territorial behavior at the site. KDFWR worked with plant
personnel to install a nest box at this site in 2007.
177. NB-Fayette Co., KY: Lexington Downtown (World Trade Center Building). Peregrine
falcons are often spotted in Lexington during the winter, but have not attempted to establish a
nest. This past winter (’06-’07), a subadult male Nimbus b/g B/01, from Dayton, OH, and a
banded female were seen loafing and feeding near the old nest box on the Central Bank Building.
Due to plans to install a new sign, the nest box was removed. A refurbished nest box was
36

installed on the roof of the World Trade Center Building in May 2007, with the hopes that this
pair will nest in 2008.
178. NB-Boone Co., KY: Duke Energy East Bend Station. Throughout the summer, East Bend
Station employee Mike Laytart reported a single peregrine falcon at this site. The bird was seen
loafing on plant structures and hunting in the vicinity of the plant. This bird may be banded, but
its identity remains unknown. In September, Laytart reported a pair of falcons at the station.
[Matthew E. Welsh Bridge Brandenburg, Kentucky / Mauchport, Harrison Co., Indiana. This site
was monitored by the Indiana DNR in 2007. John Castrale, IN DNR, reports that no peregrine
falcons were observed during two visits to the site during the breeding season.]
ONTARIO
2007 was the twelfth year that Project Peregrine has been intensively monitoring peregrine
falcons (Falco peregrinus) within the Ontario side of the Lake Superior Basin, and west to
Atikokan. The forty-four confirmed territories equals the highest number (same as in 2006) ever
recorded by Project Peregrine. Of the 44 territories, there were 37 territorial pairs, and 7 single
birds on territory. The 37 territorial pairs consisted of 30 breeding pairs, 26 successful pairs, and
56 young were assumed to have fledged. The number of chicks assumed to have fledged would
be higher, but a number of the nesting sites were not visited a second time to confirm breeding
success. Eleven of the nest sites were climbed to and the banding team banded 29 chicks (19
males and 10 females). There have now been 383 young peregrines banded at cliff sites over the
past 12 years. Banding started on June 11, which is the earliest date (6 days earlier than in 2006)
that chicks have been ready to band. Banding was completed on July 1, 2007.
There were 16 species of birds identified from the prey remains collected from 8 nests. There
have now been 74 species of bird and mammals that have been identified, and one new species
(Bank Swallow) was confirmed this year.
Project Peregrine is indebted to the many volunteers and OMNR staff who took time to survey
known cliff sites and new cliff sites for peregrine activity in 2007. With a large number of
territories to monitor each year, their time and efforts are greatly appreciated. A special thank
you to the climbers Frank Pianka, Leo Tardiff and Rod Swatton for their expertise and continued
interest in this project.
Funding to continue the monitoring and banding of peregrine falcons was provided by the
Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Species at Risk Fund, Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources Community Fisheries/Wildlife Involvement Program, and Parks Canada.
MANITOBA
Tracy Maconachie, Manitoba Wildlife Branch, supplied the following information on Manitoba
falcons.
223. SP-Radisson Hotel / Delta Winnipeg Hotel, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Tracy Maconachie
reported that five-year-old female Princess, fledged in 2002 at NSP Riverside, Minneapolis,
Minnesota, and her third year at this site, paired again with eleven-year-old male Trey bl 2/8,
fledged at this site in Winnipeg in 1996. A new ledge on the building was used that was difficult
to find and observe. Three chicks were produced and banded on June 19th with the help of a
crane. A webcam was placed. One of the males (Bandit) was killed in a collision with a building
shortly after fledging.
224. SP-McKenzie Seed Building, Brandon, Manitoba. Twelve-year-old male Zeus black *7/9,
fledged in Brandon in 1995, was here for the fifth year, paired with for the third year with fouryear-old
female Holly 31/B, fledged in 2003 at Community First Bank, Fargo, North Dakota.
The pair produced two eggs, hatched and fledged two young, both females, by mid-July,
according to Tracy Maconachie.
225. NB-Water Tower, Brandon Mental Health Centre, Brandon, Manitoba. Tracy Maconachie
reports that for the third year a pair of unidentified adults was here but did not nest.
226. NB-Condominium block in southwest Winnipeg. This is a possible new site. Tracy
Maconachie reported that a pair of birds in juvenile plumage was in residence for the entire
summer. They were Lucy black *7/M, a 2005 fledge from the Radisson, and Obi-Wan Kenobi
black B /*Y, a 2005 fledge from McKenzie Seeds. No sign of nesting activity was observed. Six
CWS-produced peregrines were at this site in 1991.
PEREGRINE RELEASES IN 2007
MISSOURI
Hack Site: Thomas Hill Energy Center, Clifton Hill, Missouri. New Site. Mike Cooke reported
three birds were hacked from this site in June of 2007. Eyasses were acquired from Brad Wood
and were of the Peales subspecies.
OVERALL SUMMARY
In sum for 2007, 443 young were known to have hatched and in most cases fledged by wild pairs
occupying 185 successful nests in the Midwestern U.S. and adjacent provinces of Canada,
exclusive of Toronto, and three young were released from captive pairs, for a total of 447, up
from 439 in 2006. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to access all of the sites and
there were most certainly more active territories, successful nests and young produced than
reflected in this report. All numbers continue to increase yearly, and while the rate of increase
may be showing indication of slowing, the growth of this population continues at a steady rate. It
is only by the concerted and diligent effort of everyone involved that we will be able to
determine with certainty when the growth of the population will plateau.
BLOOD SAMPLES
We continued collecting blood in 2007 from all wild young banded in the U.S., and from
whatever wild breeders were handled. The goal is to provide the research base for measuring
inbreeding, outbreeding, genetic variation, changes in occupancy of territories, dispersal of
adults and young, success of the different genetic stocks introduced, development of genetic
structure in the new Midwestern population, and other topics yet to be determined.
The peregrine blood samples collected over the years uniquely represent the history of the
Midwest population. Only a handful of eggs, study skins and skeletons, acquired randomly, have
been preserved, in contrast to the nearly full coverage of blood samples saved. Sophisticated as
current techniques of blood analysis may seem today, they will be considered primitive in a few
years. The blood specimens are in the permanent tissue collections at the Bell Museum of
Natural History, University of Minnesota, where they are available for study now and in the
future.
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
We need to continue to try to:
-Identify all breeders.
-Band all wild young produced
-Collect blood from all young and any adults handled
-Appropriately manage pairs nesting on man-made structures
-Maintain good working relationships with building owners and personnel responsible for
public structures used as nest site
-Monitor the peregrines on the river cliffs, North Shore of Lake Superior and on suitable
cliffs elsewhere in the region
-Collect, coordinate, and circulate information among Midwest peregrine workers
through reports and regular informal contacts
-Develop permanent names and obtain accurate lat/long information for each nesting site
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The Midwest Peregrine Project is a cooperative effort involving many people and organizations.
The University of Minnesota provides the overall coordination of the project through Pat Redig
and Jane Goggin of The Raptor Center with continuing advice, encouragement and unbounded
enthusiasm from Bud Tordoff (retired) of the Bell Museum of Natural History and the
Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior. We are able to maintain our database on
peregrines, which is the basis of the various reports you receive, through the enthusiastic
cooperation of people interested in peregrines in the 13 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces
in our area. The database is available online to anyone interested at
http://midwestperegrine.org. Richard Peifer, Kyle Hammond, and Bruce Fall make the online
database possible. We thank all of you who have sent us information. We are grateful to those
who read parts of an early draft of this report for help in detecting errors and omissions. Please
let us know about mistakes that were missed.
