• 22 June 1965<br />

CEB was renamed “Lembaga Letrik Negara (LLN)” Tanah<br />

Melayu (National Electricity Board or NEB) of the States of<br />

Malaya.<br />

• 1966<br />

NEB commissioned the first computer system in the country<br />

– an IBM 1440 main frame with 8000 KB memory – envisioned<br />

as the bedrock of the nerve centre of the Company’s new HQ<br />

building in Jalan Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.<br />

• 1968<br />

Malaysianisation of the NEB was completed with more than<br />

80 expatriate officers in key positions replaced by qualified<br />

Malaysians within a decade.<br />

• 1974<br />

Tan Sri Abu Zarim Haji Omar became General Manager of the<br />

NEB (1974-1984).<br />

• 1976<br />

The Board under the leadership of Tan Sri Dato’ Abu Zarim Bin<br />

Haji Omar, set up a training institute in 1976 known as the<br />

Institut Latihan Sultan Ahmad Shah (ILSAS).<br />

• 1976<br />

First Grid connection from the West Coast to the East Coast<br />

when both Kuantan and Pekan received electricity supply<br />

from the Grid.<br />

• 1976<br />

The NEB took over the installations of the Penang City Council<br />

at a cost of some $22 million. During the same year, the<br />

Central Government gained control of the Perak River<br />

Hydroelectric Power (PRHEP) company and its subsidiary, the<br />

Kinta Electrical Distribution Company. In 1978, the PRHEP<br />

system was integrated with that of the NEB.<br />

• 15 February 1976<br />

Pelitawanis was formed to promote goodwill and spirit of<br />

cooperation among the wives of employees and women<br />

employees of LLN/TNB. It was registered and approved by the<br />

Registrar of Societies of the Federal Territories on 1 June<br />

1978.<br />

• 1979<br />

The National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC) was officially<br />

opened by Prime Minister Tun Hussein Onn. It was established<br />

in 1978.<br />

• 1980<br />

The start of construction of the Kenyir hydro project. The 150<br />

meter high dam and its works constituted the largest<br />

hydroelectric scheme constructed in the Peninsular and on the<br />

East coast then. During its construction, the Company was<br />

involved in an operation known as “Operation Jumbo” to<br />

relocate a herd of elephants trapped by rising waters on the<br />

man-made islands in the lake. The Kenyir project was<br />

completed in December 1985.
