A New Leaf 2011-2012 Annual Report
2013 Calendar

Front cover: La Mesita Affordable Housing rendering.
The Journey
The journey of life isn’t black and white. It is colored with the emotions and diversity of thousands who
find their way to A New Leaf each year. Through engagement, endurance and empowerment, men, women
and children discover their personal strengths and move forward. As adults, the passage often requires
additional services for those who have achieved their highest level of independence without being fully-able
to support themselves.
Challenges
To help meet the challenges of the homeless who transition from our domestic violence and homeless shelters, as
well as those of low-wealth in the community, A New Leaf has moved into the affordable housing arena.
Initiatives
A New Leaf Cottages’ Desert Leaf Apartments in Mesa will accept residents by the end
of the year. This 18-unit apartment complex will become home to the chronically-challenged and shelter residents in
transition, affording the benefit of A New Leaf and State and County services nearby at The Pat Gilbert Center.
2011 – 2012 A NEW LEAF BOARDS
Thank you to our Boards of Directors for their volunteer service to the
community through A New Leaf.
By the end of next year, our La Mesita Campus will be completely rebuilt to include 80 new, affordable
workforce apartments and 16 new units for family emergency shelter. Both facilities will benefit from daycare,
counseling and a multitude of community services onsite.
Commitments
Thanks to commitments from the AZ Dept. of Housing, City of Mesa, individuals, corporations and the community,
this united effort is determined to help strengthen vulnerable lives for countless years to come.
Vision
Vision is not meant to end but continue unceasingly. A New Leaf’s initiative to provide the low-wealth workforce
with opportunities for safe, affordable housing and access to support services is a catalyst for growth and change for
the entire community. With your help, these critical services will meet the unexpected needs of our children and
families for generations to come.
Hope
The homeless have hope, not only for a roof over their heads today, but for the future of their families tomorrow.
Truly, they are no different than you and I.
Will you make a financial gift to the La Mesita campaign Your support will be greatly appreciated and can be used
for the development of the campus or for the sustainability and future of La Mesita through the La Mesita
Endowment Fund.
Either way, the impact of your generosity will be reflected in the eyes and hearts of many for years
to come. With grateful hearts for your compassion and continued support, thank you.
Truly Yours,
Affordable Supportive
Housing
To address a long-term solution
for homelessness, the La Mesita
permanent supportive housing
for the homeless as they
transition out of La Mesita’s new,
16 unit emergency shelter.
Being built on the current site,
the project will also offer 80
affordable, workforce housing
apartments with wrap-around
services, childcare, community
space and light-rail transportation
right in front of the property.
Homeless families will continue
to be served by A New Leaf
during the 2013 redevelopment.
Behavioral Health
Services
The mind of a child is a gift to be
opened, shared and encouraged
to grow. Often times, this is not
possible, for reasons the child and
parents may not understand.
Through a plethora of behavioral
health services for those of lowwealth,
doors open, lights turn on
and children come back to those
who love and care for them.
Over 4,200 children were engaged
in traditional and after school
behavioral health services this
past year.
Detention Alternative
Not everyone gets a second
chance, although a good many
deserve one. By engaging youth
in a detention alternative
program, they receive 30 days
of residential case management
and care while navigating the
ways of this culturally diverse
world we live in before transitioning
back to their homes.
Endowment
Thinking about your own future
and that of your family’s, can be
daunting. We attempt to prepare
as best we are able; still, life is
unpredictable. Looking forward,
A New Leaf visualizes the need
of services for our grandchildren
and great grandchildren. We
must prepare and ensure that
their critical needs can be met
should the circumstances arise.
Endowing for the future starts
now. Please contact Sandra
Empowering Victims
of Domestic Violence
In the time it has taken you to
read this page, one in four
women has been abused.
Reported cases of domestic
violence are on the rise. As
these brave women work to
become empowered, many begin
their new lives with their
children by their sides.
A New Leaf continues to serve
these families through
transitional shelter. Permanent
housing solutions with support
services will soon be available
at La Mesita. Vision and
Homeless Solutions
Making a commitment to yourself
is one of the hardest things to
keep, especially when you’re not
sure you believe in yourself.
While advocating for residents to
overcome the obstacles that led
to their homelessness, A New
Leaf shelter staff inspire them
to find self-respect and
fortitude.
The addition of affordable
supportive housing at Desert Leaf
Apartments and on the
La Mesita Campus helps ensure
self-sufficiency and success.
