Trudell, CAE Executive Vice President, The Engineering Society of Detroit It is very rewarding to look back at 2012. As our state and nation underwent momentous changes, so did The Engineering Society of Detroit (<strong>ESD</strong>) and its Institute. After witnessing an alarming shift at our job fairs, whereby the lines of applicants were dwindling while the number of jobs was skyrocketing, we realized it was time to tear off the Band-Aid solutions and create initiatives that will look at the causes of the problems. Thus was born the Made in Michigan Pipeline (page 6). Through this pipeline and other work of the Institute, we have come to realize the importance of training our workforce from a young age to appreciate STEM (Engineering SMArT Detroit, page 4), while diminishing negative influences through best practices. This is all in an effort to fill the state with the best and the brightest. In addition to our work, we’re truly fortunate to be the home of budding innovators whose work, we feel, is one of the most important stories of 2012 (page 7). I invite you to take a few minutes to peruse this issue and learn about the initiatives and the people who made 2012 such a fulfilling year, so much so that we decided to devote an entire issue to recognize its champions. Here is to what we accomplished in 2012 and to an even better new year! www.esd.org | The Engineering Society of Detroit | 3
