The <strong>Angels</strong> <strong>in</strong> Adoption Program, CCAI’s signature public awareness program, raises<br />
congressional awareness about the thousands of foster children <strong>in</strong> this country, and the millions of<br />
children around the world <strong>in</strong> need of permanent homes by provid<strong>in</strong>g an opportunity to members of<br />
Congress to recognize and honor the good work of their constituents who have enriched the lives<br />
of children through adoption. The <strong>Angels</strong> <strong>in</strong> Adoption Awards Gala boasts the most congressional<br />
support of any child welfare event <strong>in</strong> the nation and is the only program that allows members of<br />
Congress to take an active role <strong>in</strong> select<strong>in</strong>g a constituent of their choice as an award recipient.<br />
The CCAI International Program facilitates ongo<strong>in</strong>g communication, adoption education, and<br />
fact-f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g trips between government entities on an <strong>in</strong>ternational scale. This program strives to<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease positive dialogue with foreign officials and U.S. government officials <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> adoption<br />
policy and practice. CCAI assists governmental and nongovernmental organizations who are<br />
host<strong>in</strong>g foreign dignitaries <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, DC by organiz<strong>in</strong>g meet<strong>in</strong>gs on Capitol Hill on adoptionrelated<br />
matters. In 2002, CCAI organized a congressional delegation trip to the People’s Republic of<br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>a. The visit <strong>in</strong>cluded a lengthy meet<strong>in</strong>g with President Jiang Zem<strong>in</strong>. In April of 2003, CCAI<br />
organized its 2003 congressional trip to Romania and Russia, led by Senator Larry Craig and<br />
Senator Mary Landrieu, which <strong>in</strong>cluded meet<strong>in</strong>gs with President Ion Iliescu and Prime M<strong>in</strong>ister<br />
Adrian Nastase. Both trips positively impacted <strong>in</strong>ternational relations <strong>in</strong> regard to adoption and child<br />
welfare issues<br />
National Adoption Day is organized by eight national organizations, and CCAI is proud to be a<br />
found<strong>in</strong>g partner of this program. On the Saturday before Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> courtrooms across the<br />
country, lawyers, social workers, officials, parents, and children come together to f<strong>in</strong>alize adoptions<br />
out of foster care, and celebrate all adoptive families. In addition, national celebrations and press<br />
conferences are organized to raise public awareness of the 131,000 children available for adoption<br />
out of the U.S. foster care system. CCAI played an important part <strong>in</strong> NATIONAL ADOPTION DAY by<br />
garner<strong>in</strong>g the support of the White House and Congress. In a special Presidential Proclamation,<br />
President George W. Bush declared November as National Adoption Awareness Month, and<br />
recognized National Adoption Day.<br />
