The 30th annual Headdress Ball on Tuesday, Oct. 23, promises to make time stand still as one of the biggest official costume contests and live entertainment shows during Fantasy Fest. This over-thetop party is also considered the premier gay event of the 10day bacchanalia. “Our theme this year is Salacious Unveiling: The End of Time. I TUESDAY5 23 OCTOBER think we’re going to get a lot of interesting headdresses,” said Peter Arnow who has organized the event for 20 years. “We’ve already had contestants register, and we have even more who return year after year.” Over the past thirty years the Headdress Ball has been staged in some of the community’s favorite gay bars beginning with The Monster and traveling to Delmonicos, The Copa, Club Chameleon, Epoch, Bourbon Street Pub, before finding its way under a tent at the infamous Atlantic Shores Resort. When the Shores closed, the Southernmost Hotel Collection became the new home to the Headdress Ball and has been the proud host ever since. Although the headdress contest is the major draw, the entire show offers razzle dazzle by showcasing the talent of Gay Key West including drag queens, specialty performers, and some of the finest crooners in Key West. Faith Michaels, Sushi and the 801 girls, as well as past emcees Randy Thompson and Bruce Moore are just some of the featured performers who will share the stage with emcee Tom Luna and DJ Rude Girl. Specialty acts from the Miss Firecracker pageant and Aqua Idol will also be featured. And then of course, there’s the competition itself which typically attracts about 25 contestants who are prepared to be judged from the shoulders up! “We had to lower the stage this year because the headdresses keep getting larger and grander,” Arnow added. The prizes for the competition are as big as the headdresses —$1,500, $500 and $300 for first, second and third place. The Headdress Ball is one of the major fund raisers for the Key West Business Guild, which boasts almost 450 members and is one of the oldest gay and lesbian chambers of commerce in the country. “This event helps us support our mission to promote Key West as a premier destination for LGBTA travelers while supporting the business community at large,” said Rebecca Tomlinson, executive director of the Key West Business Guild. “It also introduces visitors that come here for Fantasy Fest to the ‘One Human Family’ philosophy of Key West. Tomlinson likens the Headdress Ball to a vaudeville follies with a tropical twist. “It’s joyfully exuberant. You never know what’s going to happen next,” she said. Headdress Ball is held under a huge tent at the Southernmost on the Beach, located at 508 South Street. The tent flaps part MIKE HENTZ/The Citizen for the crowed at 7 pm and the show begins at 8pm. Tables (which seat four) are available. Premium tables cost $320 and regular tables go for $270. General admission (Standing Room Only) is $30. This year the seventh anniversary of the “Party in Plaid” falls on Tuesday Oct. 23, 2012. It all got started when some folks in cyberspace got together and made plans to meet at the saloon. They decided to wear plaid in order to recognize one another. Over the years, plaid has morphed into an amazing costume party for the ages. Most of the costumes have consisted of plaid body paint and plaid thong bikinis. “We have seen it all,” Lansdown said. “This party gets bigger every year. The interesting thing is that newcomers visit Capt. Tony’s for the Plaid Party and end up coming back every night during Fantasy Fest.
