Masquerade March is so cool
Expect the sea to part when the whistle blows
at the beginning of the annual Masquerade
March. That’s because Key West has the only
parade in the world that when it starts, goes in
two different directions.
Revelers meet at the Key West
Cemetery on Friday, Oct. 26. When
the start signal sounds, half the
marchers head for Truman Street

and the other half turn toward
Fleming Street, marching the
wrong way down that one-way
street. And that’s before anyone has
had a drink.
It’s estimated that as many as 7,000 marchers
clog the streets between 5 and 7 p.m.
The Masquerade March is really a cocktail
parade. Participating guest houses provide the
sea of costumed marchers with free libations to
keep the wheels turning.
The Masquerade March starts at 5 p.m. at the
Key West Cemetery and ends about 7 p.m. when
the crowds dump out on the upper portion of
Duval Street to join the Street Fair. Everyone is
welcome and anyone can jump off the sidewalk
and join in.
Marchers on the Truman route are led by the
Junkanoos. They also take a mid-march break
at the Southernmost Hotel for more fun and
hilarity. Marchers on the Fleming route follow a

rock and roll band, the Hollywood Band.
Sometimes the costumes worn for the
Masquerade March outdo those seen on the
following night of the parade. And it’s where the
groups of similarly dressed costumers like to
strut their stuff.
So, join the crowd and parade through Old
Town with music and noisemakers! Thirst
quenchers provided at selected guesthouses.

entrance but revelers can join the mad march
anywhere along the two routes!
