But lovers of Key West art will gather for the “cultural” event on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Green Parrot SATURDAY9 27 OCTOBER Bar. It’s just steps off Duval Street where the parade passes later that same evening. Registration begins at 1 p.m. The contest of the emblazoned bods starts at 2 p.m. From eyeliner to toenail polish, creativity counts toward prizes and Green Parrot-style recognition. Right after the contest and continuing later in the evening the reggae and funk horn party known as Sol Driven Train brings its hard-driving, seamless mix of Southern rock, swampy funk and languid world beat to the Parrot stage. The band has shared stages and bills with the likes of Michael Franti, Richie Havens, Keller Williams, Arlo Guthrie and Blues Traveler. The event will be hosted by Miss Loretta whom locals recognize as their own personal radio celebrity, cabbie and dominatrix. Drs. Arlen and Diane Chase, who have spent more than 25 years exploring, mapping and excavating the ancient Maya city of Caracol, will be the grand marshals of the 2012 Captain Morgan Fantasy Fest Parade. The work of the famed specialists in anthropological archaeology has made them experts on the intriguing culture of the Maya. That, of course, makes them the perfect grand marshals — since the festival’s “A-Conch-Alypse” theme was inspired by a supposed “doomsday prophecy,” popularly credited to the Maya, predicting the world will end in December 2012. Professors at the University of Central Florida, the Drs. Chase have been codirectors of the Caracol Archaeological Project in Belize since 1985. Each year since then, they have investigated, excavated and studied the fascinating Maya site. Caracol was one of the largest Maya cities in Central America. The explorations of the Drs. Chase, and particularly their airborne laser terrain mapping of the site, revealed an 80square-mile settlement with palaces and plazas, industrial zones and suburbs, and even terraced fields and reservoirs — helping earn Caracol its place among the great cities of the Maya lowlands. The Drs. Chase are co-authors of more than 100 articles on Caracol and the world of the Maya, as well as books including “Investigations at the Classic Maya City of Caracol, Belize” and the upcoming “Maya Archaeology: Reconstructing an Ancient Civilization.” According to Fantasy Fest director Linda O’Brien, festival organizers chose the Drs. Chase as parade grand marshals not only because of their unparalleled knowledge of Caracol and the civilization of the Maya. “We’re very excited that the Drs. Street fair Continued from Page 19 Support our local charities and quench your thirst at one of the five Libation Stations located throughout the fair on Duval St. The on street sanctioned vendors serve Bud Light beer, mixed drinks featuring Captain Morgan Rum, the quaffs of our appropriately named new sponsor flipflop Wines, Coca Cola, Dasani water and Monster Energy Drink. Local non-profits count on the sales from the libation booths to support their important civic activities throughout the year. The 800 block features the Bourbon Street Pub Tea Dance and Balcony Bash. The heart-pumping amplified music will draw you from blocks away and the bevy of boys, boas and beads will keep you rocking at this on-the-street block party. Be prepared for zingy insults from Key West’s favorite drag queens and a stiff neck from looking up at the delirious dancers. For you sprightly defyers of the end of the world predictions, the Street Fair is a great place for just that kind of defiance dancing dressing in your best party costume. And, make sure you bring your camera to the Fantasy Fest Street Fair; otherwise, your friends will never believe the ingenious getups we get up in during this fantastical festival. And don’t forget to recycle! Recycling containers donated by Coca Cola will be everywhere. Please, be wise, be green – drop your plastic cups and bottles and paper goods (no food please) in the appropriate receptacles. Duval Street Promenade The Saturday Street Promenade begins at noon Oct. 27 with indestructible Duval Street closed off so that visitors and locals alike can walk uninhibited by traffic and enjoy the shops that line our main street. The side streets off famous Duval Street will become the main hub with food and libation vendors ready to feed the hungry crowds before, during and after the Captain Morgan Fantasy Fest Parade. A group of our sponsor vendors will set up on lower Duval Street from noon until 4 p.m. selling Fantasy Fest merchandise, offering tastes of Monster Energy Drink and flipflop wines and unusually flavored cigars to get you in high gear for the night’s spectacle. Also, enter to win a free cruise from Bare Necessities Tours and Travel. This year’s 2012 Fantasy Fest Street promenade will feature many of the local artists that Key West is known for, from dance to Jazz to Blues to contemporary music. The entertainment starts at 1pm on two different stages. Stage one, located in front of the La Concha hotel, 430 Duval St., will feature the extremely popular Paradise Big Band directed by local teacher and musician Joe Dallas. This amazing group of 40 plus musicians provides Big Band era styled music complete with a variety of vocalists. They will begin at 1pm and play until 1:45pm. The incredible Christine Naughton will entertain the crowd next from 2pm to 2:45 with her amazing bluesy styled tunes followed by Lenore Troia who has a huge Key West following as well from 3pm to 3:45pm. Stage two, located in front of Old Town Mexican Restaurant, 609 Duval Street, will open with Lenore Troia to get that end of the street hopping with many of her original Key West songs. Lenore will be followed by the dancers from the Coffee Mill Cultural Center from 2pm to 2:45pm. The Cultural Center dancers get everyone moving as they perform a variety of dance numbers. Closing the stage will be local guitarist and vocalist Steve Green from 3pm to 3:45pm. And, once again, you can’t miss the ground-pounding amplified music coming from the 800 block Tea by the Sea Dance in the Street, which begins at noon and swings until 4 p.m. featuring gorgeous boys and delightful drag queens.
