1.2 Products Manufactured in NZ In 2004, 262,904 tonnes [t] of virgin resin and reel/sheet stock were imported for manufacture in NZ 4 . Figure 3 shows the total tonnage manufactured and the proportion of packaging for each respective material type 5 . Figure 3: Total tonnage of plastic products manufactured in NZ in 2004 (Source: 2005 PNZ Mass Balance Survey) The majority of material used to manufacture products was predominantly LDPE (79,513t), followed by HDPE (52,587t) and PET (22,433t). The highest proportions of packaging by tonnage were also LDPE, HDPE and PET with 61,543, 21,587 and 22,433 tonnes for each respectively. However as a percentage of the total amount of products manufactured, the highest packaging proportions were LDPE (77.4%), PET (74.9%) and PS (70.0%). PVC has the lowest proportion at 3.5%, reflecting a significant shift away from its use in packaging. From the 2005 PNZ Mass Balance Survey, the main product types and predominant material types manufactured in NZ during the 2004 calendar year were (see Figure 4): • flexible food packaging [LDPE], 22% (57,839t) • rigid food packaging [PET and HDPE], 22% (57,839t) • construction [PVC and EPS], 19% (49,952t) • agricultural [HDPE, PVC and LDPE], 14% (36,807t) • flexible non-food packaging [LDPE], 6% (15,774t). The results 6 also showed that of the total amount of plastic products manufactured in NZ: • 71.3% (187,451t) was consumed in NZ • 28.7% was directly (39,436t) and indirectly 7 (36,018t) exported Figure 4: End uses of plastic products manufactured in NZ in 2004 (Source: 2005 PNZ Mass Balance Survey) 1.3 Plastic Material Available for Recovery Although at least 71.3% (187,451t) of the products manufactured in NZ in 2004 were consumed in NZ; not all material was recoverable in the same year of production.
