THE FACE OF JESUS
In all the readings for this Sunday we can look at the face of Jesus. There are two Gospel passages, both from the Gospel of
Luke. The first tells of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. Crowds greeted him with shouts of
“Hosanna!” The second tells of Jesus’ departure from Jerusalem, carrying the cross on his back. The same crowds derided
him and shouted for his crucifixion. We first see a face shining with glory, but in a few short days a face dark with blood
and sorrow.
Set between these two contrasting Gospel passages are equally contrasting readings from the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Isaiah describes a suffering servant who willingly submits to beating and humiliation, not even turning away his face.
He knows he belongs to God and will not be put to shame. Paul writes to the Philippians of Christ Jesus, the true Suffering
Servant, who willingly emptied himself to become human. But this man, with a very human face, has now been exalted by
God above all others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
READINGS FOR THE WEEK
Palm Sunday of the Lord Passion of the Lord
One Who Serves
In the long form of the Passion from Luke’s Gospel, Jesus refers to
himself as “the one who serves” (Luke 22:27). He was chiding the
apostles who were arguing about which one was the greatest disciple.
This reminds me of today’s second reading from Paul’s letter to the
Philippians. He says that Christ “emptied himself, taking the form of a
slave” (Philippians 2:7). Jesus is not just being humble here. He gives
us an example of how far God will go for love of humanity.
I suspect the apostles were confused when Jesus talked this way. Jews
considered the firstborn son to be the one to inherit the bulk of the
family estate. The youngest would get the least. Yet he tells them to
be like the youngest: expect little reward for what you do for others.
Now the apostles might have thought, “Sure, I can do that. I’ll preach
about the Kingdom of God for free. Then I’ll really look important and
holy.” So Jesus reminds them that the world looks at the person being
served as more important than the servant. But he is one who serves,
and if the apostles are to be leaders of the church, they will need to be
servants, too. Why Because that is how God comes to the people —
as a child born in a manger, a man who feeds the hungry but goes for
forty days in the desert without food for himself, a man who washes
the feet of his own disciples, and who heals the sick but accepts the
suffering of crucifixion.
In the Passion according to Luke, Jesus heals one of the men sent to
arrest him. He even makes friends of those who were enemies, Pilate
and Herod (Luke 23:12). Barabbas, a murderer, is set free so Jesus
can be crucified. As he is led to the cross, he consoles the women who
weep for him. And even on the cross, he is the suffering servant who
asks the Father to forgive those who are killing him. He accepts the
faith of the criminal who is also being executed and promises him a
place in Paradise.
With the example of service that Jesus shows toward those who put
him to death, can we at least be “one who serves” those around us
Can we at least forgive those who hurt us—maybe even pray for our
leaders, especially the ones with whom we disagree Tom Schmidt,
“WHY MUST HE DIE” PASSION PLAY
TriCounty Choir Institute will again be presenting
the Musical Passion Play 'Why Must He Die' for
the 22nd consecutive year in 11 performances at 11
different Catholic churches during this 2013 Lenten
season. The thirty cast members and the supporting
choir of Village Singers draw its members from
throughout the counties of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler,
Lawrence and Washington counties.
They will perform here at St. Patrick Catholic
Church on Good Friday at 7:00 pm.
'Why Must He Die' written and directed by Linda
Wallace of Sewickley Hills is a meditation through
music, drama and liturgical dance on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. This is a unique passion play using a
play within a play. Throughout the trial of Jesus by Pilate and the Accusers, the action is repeatedly frozen. The
disciples and apostles are then seen reflecting on Jesus' life and reacting on what led to Jesus' impending death. They
share these thoughts with the audience as if they hypothetically would have been allowed to observe the trial.
March Madness
Dr. Anthony F. Merante
Over the years it has become obvious to educators that there are two times during the school year when
children are the most rambunctious (a wonderful word meaning children seem overly active, talkative, and
sometimes impulsive)! I am sure you know that the first time is during Christmas. The holidays, the
excitement, the decorations, all contribute to children being…you know, rambunctious!
But did you know that the second time that this occurs is during March When I used to hear of March
Madness, all of my friends who were not in education thought of the NCAA basketball tournament. Well,
not me. I thought of the following characteristics that all came together at once for students:
Spring time (Children daydreaming)
Temperatures rising (Children get to wear shorts)
Boys who all of a sudden begin noticing girls (You can comment here!)
Sunshine which in itself makes all of us more active (Yep)
Children with more energy (Us too)
THE PRINCIPAL’S PEN
We must all remember this “second time” during the year because we don’t want parents to beat their head
against a wall and ask what has happened to all of the time, energy, and care put into child rearing over the
last year. Don’t worry, the teachers are asking themselves the same questions about manners, respect, and
understanding!
Well, you need to know it isn’t you. Keep talking to your children and remember that we all love this time of
the year. The impulsiveness we often see will disappear. As April rolls around our children usually return to
their basic selves and we all breathe a sigh of relief. Yep, March Madness doesn’t mean basketball games
when you are in a school!
