mission North Yarra Community Health aims to provide high quality and responsive programs and services to all members of our community. We work with people to overcome their experiences of disadvantage, discrimination and disempowerment. We respect people’s choices and support them to make informed decisions to promote their health and well-being. We encourage active participation in our services and in the life of our community President’s and CEO’s Report During the 2003-04 year, NYCH celebrated our 10-year anniversary. In 1993, the Community Health Centres of Carlton, Collingwood and Fitzroy amalgamated to form one organisation, and the inaugural Board of Management meeting was held on September 7th 1993. Board Members at that time were: • David Sharpe • Michael Coyne • Dr David Hillas • Sim Beow Limv • Lydia Philippou (City Of Collingwood) • Brian Stagoll • Sophy Athan (City of Fitzroy) • Geoff Barbour • Glynnis Ingram (City of Melbourne) • Edith Morgan • Commencement of the Community Asthma Project in partnership with other Community Health Centres and the Children’s Hospital, and commencement of the Restoring Health Project in partnership with St Vincent’s Hospital • Numerous achievements by the participants of the two Community Empowerment Projects with which we have been involved, including the much publicised Laughing Group, and the Campaign against Centrelink Closure • Launch of the Afghani/ Iranian Women’s Group Mural, which you can see on the front cover In conclusion, we would like to acknowledge our funders, the Victorian Department of Human Services, the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, Arts Victoria and the Australia Council, the Reichstein Foundation, the City of Yarra and the many individuals and businesses that have supported us with donations and in-kind contributions throughout the year. A special word of thanks to our volunteers, who add so much value to the work that we do. They take exercise groups, drive the bus, facilitate social groups, help with administrative tasks and support the staff in many different ways. We are extremely grateful to the many people who give so generously of their time. Two of our volunteers: Pat Lennon and Kevin Tims
We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of those Board Members, and all the other people who have served on the Board over the past 10 years. In particular, we wish to acknowledge the significant contribution of Edith Morgan, who died on May 10th 2004. Edith was a great supporter and maintained an active interest in NYCH. She will be greatly missed by both Board Members and Staff. A lot has changed since 1993. In the intervening ten years we have introduced numerous new programs and services, including: Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Nutrition, Youth Work, Next Door - Primary Health Facility for people who inject drugs, Hospital Admission Risk Programs, Health Promotion in Public Housing as well as numerous programs for refugees and holders of Temporary Protection Visas, people who are homeless or living in insecure housing, people with psychiatric illnesses, and older residents of High Rise Estates. Highlights of the 2003 - 04 year While the celebration of our 10th anniversary was a major highlight of the 2003/04 year, other highlights have included: • Inception of "What’s the Deal" an early intervention Problem Gambling Project with young people on the Collingwood Housing Estate • Funding from the Australia Council and Arts Victoria for two theatre productions on the Fitzroy Housing Estate • Publication and launch of "Eating Well Today - For Tomorrow", our paediatric needs assessment into the eating habits of children aged 0-5 • Funding from the National Illicit Drug Strategy for the employment of a Psychiatric Nurse to work with clients at the Next Door Primary Care Facility, and funding as part of the Local Drug Strategy for a case manager with this high needs client group These include: • Ms Maxianne Tritton Young • Mr Graeme Sweeney • Vegan Wares • Hotel Agencies • Brumby’s (Clifton Hill) • Brumby’s (Nth Carlton) • Brunetti’s • Valiant Enterprises (Cheltenham) • Edith Lynch • Judith Bush • Deemto Pty Ltd • Michael Romey • Du Da • Graeme Sweeney • Peter Fitzgerald • Donald Cave • Linda O’Connor • Rohan Griffiths • John Tone • Barzoo Gillan • Jane Markac • Arline Paynter • Macfarlane Burnet Institute We also thank the many other agencies with whom we have worked collaboratively during the year, including the member agencies of the Primary Care Partnership, Neighbourhood Houses and other Community Health Centres, Collingwood Community Information Centre, Melbourne City Mission, Collingwood College, the Reach Foundation, Jesuit Social Services, Brotherhood of St Laurence, Homeground, and our local hospitals. Our joint efforts achieve so much more than any of us could achieve individually. Board members also give of their time, and it is the Board that determines the overall policy of the organisation. During the year, elections were held, and as a result, we are pleased to welcome Felicity Pantelidis who will join the board of Management in October 2004. Two of the current Board members, Sandra Hills and Lisa Hurburgh have indicated that they will not be seeking further terms, and accordingly, their term of office concludes at the 2004 Annual General Meeting. On behalf of the other Board members and the staff, we would like to thank Sandra and Lisa for their contribution to NYCH over the past three years. Most importantly, we want to acknowledge the work of the staff. It is their drive, initiative and enthusiasm which, together with the input and feedback from our clients, ensures that we continue to deliver the sort of services that the community needs and wants.
