11th Annual Report & Financial Statement 2003- 04
The Afghani/Iranian
Women’s Group has
been meeting at the
Centre for about two
years. This mural,
which they designed
and created with the
assistance of Art
Therapist Emma Rose
depicts a girl and a
boy on the way to
school, and
symbolises the hopes
and aspirations that
all communities have
for their children -
that they will have a
better life.

mission
North Yarra Community Health aims to provide high quality and responsive
programs and services to all members of our community.
We work with people to overcome their experiences of
disadvantage, discrimination and disempowerment.
We respect people’s choices and support them to make informed decisions to promote their
health and well-being.
We encourage active participation in our services and in the life of
our community
President’s and CEO’s Report
During the 2003-04 year, NYCH celebrated our 10-year
anniversary. In 1993, the Community Health Centres of
Carlton, Collingwood and Fitzroy amalgamated to form one
organisation, and the inaugural Board of Management
meeting was held on September 7th 1993.
Board Members at that time were:
• David Sharpe
• Michael Coyne
• Dr David Hillas
• Sim Beow Limv
• Lydia Philippou (City Of Collingwood)
• Brian Stagoll
• Sophy Athan (City of Fitzroy)
• Geoff Barbour
• Glynnis Ingram (City of Melbourne)
• Edith Morgan
• Commencement of the Community Asthma Project in
partnership with other Community Health Centres and the
Children’s Hospital, and commencement of the Restoring
Health Project in partnership with St Vincent’s Hospital
• Numerous achievements by the participants of the two
Community Empowerment Projects with which we have
been involved, including the much publicised Laughing
Group, and the Campaign against Centrelink Closure
• Launch of the Afghani/ Iranian Women’s Group Mural,
which you can see on the front cover
In conclusion, we would like to acknowledge our funders,
the Victorian Department of Human Services, the Commonwealth
Department of Health and Ageing, Arts Victoria and the Australia
Council, the Reichstein Foundation, the City of Yarra and the
many individuals and businesses that have supported us with
donations and in-kind contributions throughout the year.
A special word of thanks to our volunteers, who add so
much value to the work that we do. They take exercise groups,
drive the bus, facilitate social groups, help with administrative
tasks and support the staff in many different ways.
We are extremely grateful to the many people who give
so generously of their time.
Two of our volunteers:
Pat Lennon and Kevin Tims

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the
work of those Board Members, and all the other people who
have served on the Board over the past 10 years. In particular,
we wish to acknowledge the significant contribution of Edith
Morgan, who died on May 10th 2004. Edith was a great
supporter and maintained an active interest in NYCH. She will
be greatly missed by both Board Members and Staff.
A lot has changed since 1993. In the intervening ten years we
have introduced numerous new programs and services,
including: Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Nutrition,
Youth Work, Next Door - Primary Health Facility for people
who inject drugs, Hospital Admission Risk Programs, Health
Promotion in Public Housing as well as numerous programs
for refugees and holders of Temporary Protection Visas,
people who are homeless or living in insecure housing,
people with psychiatric illnesses, and older residents of High
Rise Estates.
Highlights of the 2003 - 04 year
While the celebration of our 10th anniversary was a major
highlight of the 2003/04 year, other highlights have included:
• Inception of "What’s the Deal" an early intervention
Problem Gambling Project with young people on the
Collingwood Housing Estate
• Funding from the Australia Council and Arts Victoria for two
theatre productions on the Fitzroy Housing Estate
• Publication and launch of "Eating Well Today - For
Tomorrow", our paediatric needs assessment into the eating
habits of children aged 0-5
• Funding from the National Illicit Drug Strategy for the
employment of a Psychiatric Nurse to work with clients at
the Next Door Primary Care Facility, and funding as part of
the Local Drug Strategy for a case manager with this high
needs client group
These include:
• Ms Maxianne Tritton Young
• Mr Graeme Sweeney
• Vegan Wares
• Hotel Agencies
• Brumby’s (Clifton Hill)
• Brumby’s (Nth Carlton)
• Brunetti’s
• Valiant Enterprises (Cheltenham)
• Edith Lynch
• Judith Bush
• Deemto Pty Ltd
• Michael Romey
• Du Da
• Graeme Sweeney
• Peter Fitzgerald
• Donald Cave
• Linda O’Connor
• Rohan Griffiths
• John Tone
• Barzoo Gillan
• Jane Markac
• Arline Paynter
• Macfarlane Burnet
Institute
We also thank the many other agencies with whom we
have worked collaboratively during the year, including the
member agencies of the Primary Care Partnership,
Neighbourhood Houses and other Community Health
Centres, Collingwood Community Information Centre,
Melbourne City Mission, Collingwood College, the Reach
Foundation, Jesuit Social Services, Brotherhood of
St Laurence, Homeground, and our local hospitals.
Our joint efforts achieve so much more than any of us
could achieve individually.
Board members also give of their time, and it is the Board
that determines the overall policy of the organisation. During
the year, elections were held, and as a result, we are pleased
to welcome Felicity Pantelidis who will join the board of
Management in October 2004.
Two of the current Board members, Sandra Hills and Lisa
Hurburgh have indicated that they will not be seeking further
terms, and accordingly, their term of office concludes at the
2004 Annual General Meeting. On behalf of the other Board
members and the staff, we would like to thank Sandra and
Lisa for their contribution to NYCH over the past three years.
Most importantly, we want to acknowledge the work of the
staff. It is their drive, initiative and enthusiasm which,
together with the input and feedback from our clients,
ensures that we continue to deliver the sort of services that
the community needs and wants.
Participation
- good for community health
The Community Liaison Committee has been meeting every three months since 1994, and
it provides an opportunity for our clients to receive information, give us feedback, and raise
matters of concern. Most importantly, it strengthens community cohesion and enables the
sharing of culture in an informal and supportive setting. For information on the Community
Liaison Committee, contact Bich Ha on 9411 4333.

Lien Thi Bui (bottom right) and Nesima Arabo (top left) were both participants in
the Community Empowerment Project, and there is no doubt that supporting
parents is the best and most effective way to ensure that children are also
supported and nurtured. Other programs that support children include our
popular Hanen groups “It takes two to talk”. These therapy groups assist parents
to help their child develop and improve language skills. Michael and Anna Black
(shown bottom left with Thomas) have been attending one of the Hanen groups.
During the year we celebrated 10 years of Yarra Community Support,
our program for people living in the community with psychiatric
disabilities. As part of that celebration, participants collaborated in the
production of a book that records their journey to recovery. The striking
We live in a multicultural society, and our
local community is particularly diverse.
To underscore this multiculturalism, the
Afghani/ Iranian Women’s Group wanted to
go to the cricket last year, and thoroughly
enjoyed their day out.
The African Women’s Group has been meeting at
the Collingwood Neighbourhood House with our
midwives and our Family And Reproductive Rights
Program Worker to provide mutual support and to
increase their knowledge of health services
available in the community.
We welcome people of all ages, cultures and
languages to our Community Health Centre

Access is a right, not a privilege
The mural depicted has been painted on the entrance to the
underground car park on the Collingwood High Rise estate. The
artists, Eugene Lovett, Gary Smith, Mary Hassall and Denise
Lovett are part of the indigenous community, which has been living
and meeting in Collingwood and Fitzroy for many years. Working as
the BEEM artists, they have painted a number of other murals in
the local area, and last year they donated the proceeds from the
sale of one of their paintings to the Collingwood Youth Space.

Minimising the harm associated with the use
of injecting drugs - for users, families, friends
and the community
Next Door, part of our Drug Safety Services, offers a variety
of programs and interventions to our clients. This mural
was painted by the participants in our Art Therapy group,
which is facilitated by Art Therapy student, Celia.
It is on display in the window of our shop front at
350 Smith Street. For information about any of our Drug
Safety Services, contact Chris Hardy (RN) on 9417 1466.

Helping you take better
care of yourself
Our philosophy is to encourage people to take better control over their
health, and we can help you to do that, either individually or through
some of our group programs. The Collingwood Estate Gym is a
valuable community resource, and it’s open every weeknight from 5.00
pm. Leon, Ricardo and Paul regularly use the gym to improve their
fitness, while Christine and Jennifer attend our Women Living Stronger
(Weights Training) class, which runs weekly. Jennifer says "I really like
the relaxed atmosphere of the group - it makes it fun and enjoyable!"

The Collingwood Youth Space opened in 2003, and has recently
celebrated its first birthday. Young people come together for a
range of activities, which includes some excursions.
Participants in the program also designed the artwork for the
invitation to their 1st Birthday Party, which was a great success.
In a healthy community we know who
our neighbours are and how to get
help when we need it
The Collingwood Laughing Group was one of the outcomes from
the Community Empowerment Project. They epitomise the old
saying about "Laughter being the best medicine" and are part of
a worldwide movement. Judging by the graffiti, on the rubbish
bin, they are certainly making a difference!
practitioners are
experienced and able to
provide treatment and
support options to meet
individual needs.
In particular, the Yarra
Community Support
Team, our Psychiatric
Disability Rehabilitation and Support Service, works with
people on a wide range of issues to promote recovery and
enhance quality of life. The Team operates on a home-based
outreach model and can bring services to people within their
home or the community.
The Team was proud to celebrate 10 years of service delivery
in September, and to reflect on the growth and achievements
over the decade since a humble beginning in 1993. The service
now has the capacity to support 50 people at any one time
across Carlton and the City of Yarra and is an integral part of
mental health services in the area. To mark the occasion, past
and present participants put together a booklet of poetry, prose
and artwork. This beautiful collection of material was launched
at a special 10th birthday celebration and has been distributed
to organisations and individuals across the City of Yarra.
The year has seen the consolidation of the intensive support
program for people who are homeless or at risk of
homelessness and it has been inspirational to see the
difference stable housing with support can make to people
living with a mental illness.
The Team continues to have a strong and important role in
advocating the needs of people with a mental illness to
ensure that services and systems are appropriate and
accessible. To this end positive relationships have been
developed with the Consumer Consultant at Inner East Mental
Health Service and Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council.
YCS was again successful in securing a Community Grant
from the City of Yarra to continue the popular Pathways for
Women program. This program is run in conjunction with
local Yarra services and has a focus on assisting women to
develop a range of skills, raise awareness of general health
issues and provide access to other NYCH services.
Drug Safety Services encompass a very broad range of programs,
but all of them have a Harm Reduction philosophy, and seek to
reduce the harm associated with illicit drug use to users
themselves, their friends and families and the whole community.
Services which we provide to the community as a whole include
talks, workshops and training around a range of drug related topics
such as "safe disposal", "responding to overdoses" and "Cardio
Pulmonary Resuscitation".
During the year we received funding as part of the Local Drug
Strategy for a Dual Diagnosis worker (Mental Health/ D&A) and as
a result, Amanda (a psychologist) has joined the team, and we
were also successful in our application to the National Illicit Drug
Strategy for a Psychiatric Nurse, who will commence during 2004.
Our Services include:
Chris Hardy
• Primary Needle and Syringe Program
This program provides health information, referral, advocacy, new
injecting equipment and facilities for safe disposal of used
injecting equipment.
• Secondary Needle and Syringe Programs are located in each
of our Community Health Centres, and provide a similar, but
more limited range of services.
• Walkdowns are a service specifically for residents of the High
Rise Estates in Yarra, and provide a regular clean up of
inappropriately disposed injecting equipment and other drug
related paraphernalia.

Allied Health
team reports
The Allied Health Team at NYCH is a dynamic multidisciplinary
team that provides a wide range of health services and
programs that aim to prevent illness, disease and injury and
to promote good health and well-being.
The Team consists of:
Podiatry - our highly skilled Podiatrists do more than just cut
toenails! We see people of all ages, including children, for the
diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders of the foot
and lower leg. This might include biomechanical assessments,
the making of splints or orthoses, surgery for ingrown
toenails or wound management.
Physiotherapy - our Physiotherapy team is available to see
you for any issue you have that relates to pain or movement
dysfunction. This might be due to problems that originate in
the joints, muscles or nerves and could be the result of injuries,
chronic diseases, pregnancy and childbirth or developmental
issues to name a few examples. Our physiotherapists have a
strong focus on exercise as this is a crucial part of any
rehabilitation, and is also essential to good health.
Nutrition - our Dietitians work with people to help them to
choose and prepare food that is best for their health, lifestyle
and budget. This might be because you have diabetes, heart
disease, bowel problems, food allergies, appetite or stomach
problems affecting your ability to eat, or just a need for cheap
meals ideas.
Occupational Therapy - our OT assists people to develop skills
and strategies to change their environment and lifestyle, so
they can live a fuller and more independent life. This can include
an assessment of your home and provision of aids if necessary.
Our OT service targets older adults and people of any age with
a disability.
Kristine Olaris
Speech Pathology - provides assessment and treatment for
preschool children with speech and language development
problems. Some of the more common conditions that our
Speech Pathologist helps with include stuttering, articulation
problems and delayed language development.
The Allied Health Outreach Team, consisting of an
occupational therapist, dietitian, physiotherapist and podiatrist,
provides services to people who are homeless or at risk of
becoming homeless.
The Allied Health Team is involved in a wide range of group
programs and health promotion activities. Some of the
highlights of the last year included:
• The launch of "Eating Well Today, for Tomorrow" Paediatric
Nutrition Needs Assessment
• Celebrations with our local indigenous community including
Family Day in the Park as a part of NAIDOC week, and a
Christmas party
• The establishment of a Youth Gym Program at the Collingwood
High Rise Gym
• The Hanen "It Takes Two to Talk" group program for parents
with preschool children with delayed language development
• The Better Health Program for people suffering from chronic
diseases and arthritis
• Tai Chi classes
• The Living with Diabetes Sessions and the Be Well Expos
This year we had some growth in Allied Health. This included
an additional weekly session of dietetics and some additional
hours in physiotherapy and podiatry to work with St Vincent’s
Hospital in the Restoring Health Program. This program aims to
strengthen the ability of the community sector to manage
people with chronic diabetes, heart or lung disease, thereby
decreasing inappropriate reliance on St Vincent’s Hospital.
The Allied Health Team aims to provide a high quality,
comprehensive range of services that are sensitive, relevant
and responsive to the diverse social and cultural needs of all in
our local community. We are always keen to hear of any ideas
you may have of ways that we can improve our service.
Dental Services
Dental health continues to be an area of high need for the
community, and, in common with other public dental services,
we experience unacceptably long waiting lists.
The additional funding announced in the State Budget was a
welcome development, however a crucial issue remains the
availability of dentists to work in the public sector. As part of our
contribution toward the training of more public sector dentists, we
have continued and increased our program of undergraduate dental
student placements. As a result, students are exposed to
community dentistry, gain experience in working with our clients
and help to raise the profile of public dentistry.
• Disposals - we collect and dispose of injecting equipment
which has been placed in the Sharp Safes located in
numerous places throughout the municipality, and conduct
regular "sweeps" of parks and other public places where
people may have disposed of syringes inappropriately.
We also respond to the "Disposal Hot Line” (9417 5125)
and ensure that anyone who finds a discarded syringe can
call and have it safely removed.
• Next Door is our Primary Health Care Service for people
who inject drugs and provides peer education, nursing
services, medical service (including pharmacotherapies)
counselling and numerous other programs such as Art
Therapy and Anger Management. During the past year,
we had over 11 000 client contacts and 186 people
commenced a pharmacotherapy (Methadone or
Buprenorphine) program.
• Holding it Together is one of the Hospital Admission Risk
Programs that we deliver in conjunction with St Vincent’s
Hospital, and targets people with drug issues who are
frequent presenters in the emergency department.
• Yarra Drug & Health Forum. The Executive Officer of the
Yarra Drug & Health Forum is located with our Drug Safety
Services, and the Forum continues to play an active role in
community development and advocacy around drug issues.
In an effort to maximise the available time and reduce waiting lists,
this year we have contracted with a dental prosthetists, whose role
is to make both full and partial dentures, and thus "free up" more
dental time.
Within the constraints of the funding, our dental team provides
general and emergency dental care to holders of Health Care Cards
and their dependent children. In addition, we now provide services
to all pre school children that require dental care. (Some of these
services attract a co payment, which is set by the Government, and
is currently at $21.00 per visit, however, there is provision for "no
cost" treatment for people with complex health needs and for all
children of Health Care Card Holders).
In addition we offer some specialist clinics for people who are
homeless and for those with drug and alcohol issues, and these
are in general provided at no cost.
The importance which our community places on dental care was
underscored during the year, when the Health and Wellbeing
Committee of the Fitzroy Neighbourhood Advisory Board made
arrangements for the residents of the Atherton Gardens High Rise
Estate to have access to dental services at a reduced cost.
We look forward to a productive year ahead, while we endeavour to
offer optimum dental care to our community.

Health Promotion
Building Community
Capacity
Reception, Finance and
Information Technology
team reports
Health Promotion is a core component of all our programs and
services and is defined as ‘the process of enabling people to
increase control over, and to improve their health’ (Ottawa
Charter, 1986). NYCH is committed to improving the Health of
the community by incorporating Health Promotion principles
into all aspects of our planning and service provision.
NYCH has three priority Health Promotion areas:
• Families & Children,
• Chronic Illness and
• Access to Services.
A multidisciplinary approach is
adopted when selecting strategies
for addressing these issues.
The Chronic Illness Group have
implemented a "Eat Well, Move
Well, Be Well" Expo at our Centres
and at public housing estates
across Yarra. (See the photo on the
August Page). The Access Working Group is predominately
involved in improving access to our services by particular
communities that sometimes have difficulty accessing health
services, with a particular focus on improving access for ATSI,
Vietnamese and Refugee communities. The Families and
Children’s Working Group has focussed on developing
material in different languages to be distributed across the
public housing estates in Yarra, and on developing and
strengthening links with local primary schools and Maternal &
Child Health Centres.
The ‘Health Promotion in Public Housing’ project was
re-funded during the year and aims to improve health
promotion practice across the public housing estates of
Collingwood, Fitzroy and Richmond. The program also has
close links to the Neighbourhood Renewal Program and is an
invaluable resource to the Health and Wellbeing Committees
on the high rise estates. NYCH continues to be a key
stakeholder in the Neighbourhood Renewal Program, with
many staff involved in numerous activities.
NYCH also provides a wide range of social, therapeutic,
recreational and exercise based groups to cater for the needs
of the community. If you would like further information about
any of the groups, or if you would like to become a volunteer
at NYCH, please contact Melissa Bryan, Health Promotion
and Volunteer Coordinator on 9349 7333.
The Community Liaison Committee (CLC) is one important
element in our overall aim to empower the community and
increase participation in society’s structures. The CLC has been
a part of NYCH for nearly ten years, and its meetings are a real
highlight on our calendar of events. There are usually over 120
participants and the meetings are simultaneously translated
into eight community language - so they are definitely not for
the faint hearted! They provide an opportunity for community
members to give us feedback on our services,
receive new information, and most importantly to
strengthen community and cross- cultural bonds.
An offshoot of the CLC is the Community
Representatives Group, which includes one or two
people from each of the NYCH communities, and
enables more in-depth discussion than is possible at
the large CLC meetings. The aim of the
Representatives Group is to ensure that the voices of
Bich Ha
various communities are effectively heard by NYCH,
and Representatives are asked to think of themselves
as a conduit for information between their particular
community and NYCH as a whole.
Another important part of our work to strengthen participation
and engagement has been the Community Empowerment
Project (CEP). This project, funded by the Commonwealth
Government and auspiced by the City of Yarra, was delivered in
Collingwood, Richmond and Fitzroy. NYCH managed the
Collingwood Project and was represented on the Fitzroy
Project, (which was auspiced by St Mary’s House of Welcome).
The CEP delivered accredited training to participants, and
supported them with a variety of community strengthening
projects. These included the establishment of a Sewing Group,
the organisation of a Campaign against Centrelink Closure,
Ballroom Dancing, Reconciliation BBQs, the Laughing Group,
Photo Exhibitions and a whole host of other projects and
activities developed by the CEP participants.
The Collingwood CEP was supported by Kellie Nagle, and
she did an outstanding job!
NYCH welcomes new members and new communities. To find
out more about the Community Liaison Committee and how
you can become involved, give Bich a ring on 9411 4312.
The Reception, Finance and IT Teams are the people who keep the
wheels of the organisation turning.
Reception is well known to everyone who visits any of our centres,
as it is usually a receptionist who will make an appointment, and
provide information about our services. However, receptionists are
also the people who maintain client records, file results, archive
records which are no longer needed, and ensure that the waiting
areas are welcoming and well organised.
Our Finance staff keep track of the budget, ensure that we meet
our accountabilities to the many funding streams which make up
the budget, pay our creditors and send out invoices as required.
The IT staff maintain and trouble shoot our IT system, provide
reports on service usage, train staff in new applications and
represent our needs to sector wide forums.
Without these "front of house" and "back of house" teams, the
clinicians who provide all the services which are so valued by the
community could not do their work.
Nursing
The past 12 months have been an exciting time for the
Community Health Nursing Team. Our nurses and midwifes
continue to provide a high standard of clinical and community
nursing services that are culturally appropriate, dynamic and
sensitive to the needs in our community. The aim is to empower
people and assist them to manage their health problems.
The Nursing Team consists of:
• Clinic Nurses, who undertake health checks such as blood
pressure and blood sugar level, wound dressings or
assistance with medication management - the flexible
‘drop-in’ nursing clinics in Collingwood and Fitzroy are open
Monday to Friday, and also on Saturday mornings in
Collingwood. You can bring in your children for their
scheduled immunisations, obtain travel vaccinations for
yourself and the yearly flu injection for adults.
Through the Well Women’s Clinics nurses provide
information on all aspects of women’s health, contraception
and pregnancy. You can come along and have your
routine Pap Smear done. This year Lisa Harris has set up a
weekly Well Women’s Clinic on the Atherton Garden
Estate in Fitzroy and is available every Thursday morning.
• The Community Midwives offer antenatal care, pregnancy
education, and support women and their families before and
after the birth of their child. The Midwives work closely
with GPs and maternity hospitals to provide a holistic and
integrated service for women.
• Aged Care Nurse, Marlies Blatz, provides an outreach
service to older people living at home, and support to their
families. This includes home visiting and monitoring, health
assessments, case planning and referrals. She also provides
information on a broad range of aged care issues.
• HARP Nurses The Hospital Admission Risk Program has
been developed to assist people with chronic conditions
to reduce the preventable use of hospital admissions.
We are part of two separate projects which are part of this
overall program - one involves children and young people
under 18 who are affected by asthma, and one involves
older people with chronic heart failure, respiratory
illness and diabetes.
All our Community Health Nurses also deliver care through
health promotion and education activities to community
groups. If you are interested in a nurse speaking to your group
you can contact them through any of our Centres.
Medical
Our dedicated Doctors provide a high quality medical service to
the community. We have medical practices at both Collingwood
and Fitzroy, as well as a sessional practice at Carlton (with a
focus on mental health issues) and a practice at Next Door, our
service for injecting drug users.
During the year both the Collingwood and Fitzroy practices
were accredited through "GPA Accreditation Plus" a system of
review and benchmarking which provides assurance to all our
patients about the quality of our systems and processes.
External reviewers conduct assessments that look at matters
such as:
• Access and availability
• Communication with patients
• Medical record systems
• Risk reduction and disease prevention
• Patients’ rights
• Continuous education
Chris O’ Neill
Both practices were assessed very highly through this process,
and it’s great to get this kind of independent confirmation about
the quality of the services that the practice as a whole provides.
The Collingwood and Fitzroy practices are also accredited as
Training Practices, which means that we offer 6-month rotations to
General Practice Registrars, and give them the opportunity to
experience working in a Community Health setting.
One of the real advantages of locating a medical service within a
Community Health setting is that the GPs can work collaboratively
with other disciplines to provide an holistic response.
For example, GPs work collaboratively with counsellors,
caseworkers, nurses and other disciplines to ensure that we
provide an integrated response to the complex health needs of
refugees and asylum seekers.
A further example of the integration that is made possible by the
provision of medical services within a Community Health setting
occurs at the Fitzroy Centre, where we have developed what is in
effect a "centre of excellence" in the area of drug treatment.
The continuum of service, which includes a Needle and Syringe
Program, pharmacotherapies, dental services, dietetics, and other
Allied Health Services is widely recognised as exemplary, and has
resulted in numerous high level national and international
delegations visiting us to learn from our models and practices.
The flip side of our high quality and resultant "popularity" is that our
GPs are increasingly booked well in advance, and long waiting
times are becomingly increasingly common - we ask all our
patients to be more "patient" when experiencing these delays.
Pharmacy
In Victoria there are only two Pharmacies located in Community
Health Centres, and we are fortunate to have one of those at our
Collingwood Centre. The Pharmacy is funded by the Commonwealth
Department of Health and Ageing, and during the last financial
year we dispensed over 38 000 prescriptions to our clients.
In addition to dispensing prescriptions the pharmacists provide
information about medicines and counsel people on the correct
use of their medications and related issues. The pharmacists also
regularly talk to local community groups about effective use of
medication and participate in campaigns such as "Be Wise with
Medicines" and "Quit Week".
The Pharmacy can be used by anyone with a prescription from one
of the doctors at North Yarra Community Health and a pre-paid
Pharmacy Contribution scheme is available for people who use the
pharmacy services frequently.

Groups
Clients by Country of Birth
Our database shows that, in addition to the 59% of
people born in Australia, we have people from all the
following countries using the service:
In addition to the many individual consultations that we provide, we had
over 15 000 group attendances during the year. Given that 41% of our
clients were born outside Australia, it’s not surprising that 37% of our group
attendances were for cultural groups, although many people from a variety
of backgrounds also attend the other types of groups that we offer. The
opening of the "Youth Space", at the base of the Collinwood High Rise has
seen a big increase in our contact with young people, and now 10% of all
group attendances are with young people.
Client Contacts
Registered clients Age and Gender
During the year we provided nearly 190 000 individual
services across all our service types. This equates to
over 3500 people a week coming into the centres,
which explains why our waiting rooms can
sometimes be "standing room only".
Nearly a third of all contacts were in the area of Drug
Safety Services, which includes our Needle & Syringe
Programs, Drug and Alcohol Counselling, and a
multiplicity of other services provided particularly at
348 and 350 Smith Street.
Our General Practitioners had nearly 40 000
consultations during the year, while our pharmacy
dispensed over 38 000 prescriptions and had nearly
15 000 individual visits.
Overall, just over 10 000 registered
clients utilised our services during the
2003/04 year, about 500 more than in
the previous year. These figures do
not include the large number of
unregistered clients who utilise our
services, particularly our Drug Safety
Services. About 55% of our clients
are female, although in the 0-9 and
the 40-49 age groups there is little
difference in utilisation by males/
females. In all other age groups
however, our services are more
utilised by women. This is particularly
marked in the 20-29 age group (when
a lot of women are giving birth) and in
the 80+ age group, since women
tend to live longer. While the overall
number of clients utilising our
services has increased, the proportion
of male/female have stayed
remarkably similar.
