School Policies and Procedures
School Day
The school day for all Farragut Elementary School students
is from 8:00 a.m. to 2:10 p.m.. Students who eat breakfast at
school must be in line for the Breakfast Program at 7:40 a.m.
Students who do not eat breakfast at school will have
supervision, in grade level designated areas, beginning at
7:45 a.m. It is expected that students will have reading
material every day. All students remain in their designated
area and read until their teacher escorts them to class.
Students Transported to School Other Than by Bus
Parents driving children to and from school must drop their children off in front of the
school on Wilcox Street. No cars, vans, etc. are to park in the cut out areas on Wilcox Street
and Glenwood Avenue from 7:40 – 8:00 a.m. and 1:45 – 2:15 p.m. Parents are strongly
encouraged to insure their child is dropped off by 7:50 a.m. to avoid missed class
time.
Tardy Procedures
Tardy is not being ready for instruction at 8:00 a.m. with a teacher. If YOUR child is
late, YOU must come into the school office to sign them in. Students will receive a
tardy pass from the office staff. We value our instructional time with the students.
This procedure is for the safety of all children in our building.
Reporting absences:
1. Parents are required to call the school at 815-723-0384 between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00
a.m. on the first day of the absence.
2. If the school does not receive a call, the school will attempt to contact the
parent/guardian. A working phone number for each student is very important
so the school can contact the home when necessary. If no parent contact is made
with the school, the student will be marked unexcused.
Class work missed during any absence may be made up upon the students return at the
teacher’s discretion. During an extended illness, work may be sent home. Teachers are
not required to gather any work for students ahead of an absence. Work will be made
available the day following the absence. Teachers will not interrupt their teaching to
gather assignments.
3

Leaving School Early
No pupil shall be allowed to leave the school before the hour of closing except in case of
illness or at the request of the parent or guardian. In any other circumstance, the principal
shall have the final word on early dismissal. Please attempt to schedule doctor/dentist
appointments after school whenever possible so your child does not miss out on valuable
instructional time. Please send a note with your child if they have to leave school early.
Also, if your child normally rides the bus and you are going to pick them up, you must send
a note so that your child is not placed on the bus. NO student will be taken off the bus or
released from a bus line without a pass from the office. If the office is not notified before
1:30 p.m., we cannot guarantee that your child will not be sent home on the bus.
School ends at 2:10 p.m. Picking students up earlier for the convenience of the parent
is not allowed.
STUDENTS WILL ONLY BE RELEASED FROM FARRAGUT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WITH
AUTHORIZED ADULTS. A PHOTO ID IS REQUIRED. A RELEASE OF STUDENT
AUTHORIZATION FORM IS SENT HOME THE FIRST DAYS OF SCHOOL AND MUST BE
RETURNED.
Walkers and Car Riders
Students who walk to and from school should take the most direct route. Students are not
to cut through yards or alleys. Crossing guards are provided from 7:30 – 8:00 a.m. and
from 2:00 – 2:20 p.m. at:
Center St. and Western Ave. Glenwood Ave. and Raynor Ave. Plainfield Rd. and Taylor St.
Glenwood Ave. and Wilcox St. Taylor St. and Wilcox Ave.
Parents who drive their children to school should drop off on Wilcox Street on the
southbound side (the school side) of the street. Parents may not double- park or stop the
flow of traffic. Children must cross at the corners. NO STUDENT should cross in the
middle of the street.
Dismissal
Teachers will escort walkers and car riders at dismissal. Students may not take shortcuts
across the playground or go to the park or parking lot areas. Students will meet parents
and siblings in the open area. It is important that you pick up your child on time.
Picking up a child late from school causes anxiety and we do not have the necessary staff to
accommodate late pickups. No student may reenter the building/classrooms without an
adult escort. If you are going to be late in picking up your child, please call the office.
Students who are repeatedly left at school following dismissal may be reported to Social
Service Agencies and/or the Joliet Police Department.
4

Bus students will be escorted to their bus. All bus riders will be placed on the bus unless
a parent calls or sends a note. Student delivered messages will not be accepted.
Arrangements must be made prior to 1:30 p.m. to guarantee student safety.
reinforcement of skills. Parents are responsible for seeing that their child completes
assignments. Details of individual teacher expectations for homework will be given out at
the beginning of the school year. To ensure school/home communication, Farragut
provides students in grades 2-5 with an assignment notebook. Parents are encouraged to
initial their child’s assignment notebook to ensure that homework or daily oral reading
practice for that had has been completed. Parents may also monitor their child’s work via
the parent portal.
Report Cards and Conferences – See District Handbook
Promotion/Retention Procedures
.
PARENTS RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES
Admission and Registration Requirements - See District Handbook
Communication
Every effort will be made to keep parents informed of student progress. Every
Wednesday all Farragut Elementary School students will take home their “Farragut
Folder”. This folder contains important information for parents/guardians. Please make
sure your child is getting this folder of information to you on a weekly basis. In addition,
Farragut may choose to send phone messages to families utilizing the “School-Reach”
system regarding upcoming events. Furthermore, parents may access information via the
Parent Portal.
Change of Address and Telephone
Parents are required to keep the school informed of current, working home phone
numbers, emergency phone numbers, and/or work phone numbers if applicable. This is
extremely important for times when we are dealing with student illnesses, accidents
and/or other emergency situations. Parents are also required to keep the school
informed of current address information.
District 86 Web Site
District 86’s web site, www.joliet86.org is an excellent source of information. There is a
section for each District 86 school and links to teacher web pages. There is also an
excellent parent resource section.
Health Services
Illness – Farragut Elementary School follows District 86 and State of Illinois guidelines with
regards to communicable diseases. If students are attending school and are viewed as
being contagious, a parent will be notified and the child sent home. The Farragut
Elementary School office staff works hard to meet student needs with regard to illness.
6

Field trips
During the school year, classes may take field trips in and/or outside District 86 as part of
their curricular activities. Transportation may be on foot or on an approved bus provider.
Money may be collected to pay for the cost of these trips. No student is allowed to go on a
field trip without the written consent of their parent/guardian.
In conjunction with our partnership with the University of St. Francis, our students
frequently walk over to visit the campus. A University of St. Francis consent form will be
sent home at the beginning of the school year and will cover any and all field trips to their
campus. Students who have repeated discipline problems in school will not be granted
permission to accompany their class on such field trips. Students who miss the trip for any
reason will not be reimbursed for the cost of the trip. The classroom teacher will contact
parents if a student has lost the privilege of attending a field trip. Chaperones are expected
to follow Farragut Elementary School’s guidelines while attending any school sponsored
activity or outing.
Money
When sending money to school, please put it in an envelope marked with the student’s
name, the teacher’s name, the amount, and the purpose of the money. Students should not
give money to other students for any reason.
Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)
The PTO has played an important role in helping to provide quality education in Joliet. All
parents are encouraged to join the PTO. Regular meetings are scheduled and all parents
are encouraged to attend.
School Closings
Severe weather can present unusual problems for everyone. When District 86 closes
schools because of inclement weather, there will not be anyone at Farragut Elementary
School to receive your child. Therefore, it is very important for parents to observe the
following:
1. Listen to local radio stations for weather bulletins.
2. Listen to local radio stations (1340 WJOL, 97.0 WLLI, 93.5 WJTW) for
announcements concerning Joliet schools. Farragut Elementary School is part of
Joliet Public Schools District 86, You may also access the District website for
information: http://www.joliet86.org or http://www.cancellations.com
3. Farragut Elementary School and District 86 will also utilize an automated calling
system that will notify parents of any emergencies or school closings. Again, it is
7

extremely that the office has current phone numbers where parents/guardians
can be reached.
4. Children should be kept at home if their parent feels there is actually a serious
question of weather related safety.
5. Schools ordinarily remain in session until 2:10 p.m. regardless of weather. It
would be very difficult to close schools early because of the number of working
parents.
6. In some cases, it may be necessary for individual parents to pick their child up
early. Remember, students will only be dismissed with parents/guardians.
7. Parents are asked NOT TO CALL the school to ask if the school is closed. We ask
that they listen to the radio. In bad weather, we need all lines open for
emergencies.
Student Birthdays
All students’ birthdays will be recognized at Farragut Elementary School. Every morning,
birthdays will be announced and the student(s) will receive a birthday card. NO birthday
treats or balloons are to be sent to school.
Use of School Telephone
The Farragut Elementary School phone number is 815-723-0394. Students or teachers are
not called from classes for telephone calls. Students are not allowed to call home for
forgotten projects, books, musical instruments, etc.
If you need to talk to a teacher, the office staff will give that teacher a message. Teachers
can also be reached directly via their district email.
The office phones are for school business only.
students messages.
Washroom Breaks
We cannot be responsible for giving
Teachers make every effort to provide timely breaks for students. If your child has any
medical conditions, please contact the teacher to share this information and have a doctor’s
note placed on file with our school’s nurse.
8

Student Expectations
Discipline is necessary in order to maintain a safe and positive learning environment. It is our
goal to promote responsibility and self-discipline among our students. The students of
Farragut Elementary School need these skills to become productive members of society and
reach their fullest potential by learning to SOAR.
In order to achieve our goals, it is imperative that students, parents, teachers, and
Our building procedures are based on a set of uniform expectations for the common areas
of our building. These Guidelines for Success will be reviewed with all children. This
familiarity with the guidelines should make everyone confident in dealing with everyday
steps in the building plan’s consequences.
Breakfast
Breakfast and Lunch Program
students Wednesday “Farragut Folder”. The same Federal guidelines that are applied to
determine eligibility for free or reduced lunch will be used to determine eligibility for free
or reduced breakfast. Breakfast will be served from 7:40 – 7:55 a.m. Students need to be
on time in order to eat breakfast. The doors for breakfast will be closed and no breakfast
will be served after 7:55a.m. to guarantee that students are in class by 8:00 a.m.. The cost
is .70 for full pay and .30 for reduced.
Lunch
1. Students will follow the directions given by the lunch supervisors
2. Students have the option of ordering a school lunch or bringing a sack lunch.
Cost is $1.00 for full pay and .40 for reduced. Extra milk may be purchased for
.35. Lunches are ordered on a daily basis. Lunches need to be ordered by
8:10AM; it is important for parents to contact the school and arrange for their
child to receive a lunch for that day if a student is reporting late to school. If
students order a school lunch, they will not be allowed to have additional items
with that lunch unless prior arrangements have been made with the building
principal. Students bringing cold lunches from home should have all food or
beverage containers in safe containers. No glass or cans are permitted.
3. Students are not allowed to charge lunches. All money must be paid in order to
in advance. Free or reduced lunch application forms are available at the school
office. Federal guidelines are applied to determine eligibility for free or reduced
lunch. Until eligibility is determined students are expected to pay for lunches.
4. Each student is responsible for his/her lunch ticket. No student should return to
the room for their ticket. Student lunch tickets are extremely important in order
for lunchroom procedures to run efficiently. Those students without lunch
tickets may be served after all other tickets have been processed.
5. Each student will stay in line, receive his/her lunch, and move to his/her
assigned table. This is done in an orderly fashion. During lunch, each student
will stay seated, raise his/her hand for help, and talk quietly to his/her
classmates.
6. For dismissal, each student will place all garbage inside the lunch tray, put
his/her head down, and remain quiet, until they are dismissed by supervisors.
