Joliet Public Schools District 86Charles E. Coleman, Ed.D.Superintendent of SchoolsAracelis C. PopadichSecretaryOctober 2011Dear Parents:Board of School InspectorsJeffrey K. Pritz, PresidentDeborah K. Ziech, Vice PresidentNatalie A. ColemanLorraine E. GuerreroTonya M. MyersGwendolyn R. UlmerDemmond C. DorrisCharyll M. ColstockSecretaryResults from last year’s Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) are now released. ISATmeasures individual student achievement relative to the Illinois Learning Standards. Students ingrades 3, 5, 6, and 8 were tested in reading and mathematics. Students in grades 4 and 7 were tested inreading, mathematics, and science. ISAT scores represent only one snapshot of a child’s learning andhelps us measure how students in a given class or school perform in relation to other students who takethe test. Additional assessments are given throughout the year. A student’s achievement on the ISAT,combined with the District assessments given over the entire school year, provide a more accurateoverview of student learning. Our schools have shown growth in both reading and math over the past five years. District 86 staff willcontinue to work hard to meet the needs of each of our students. We are confident that our efforts willresult in “Success for all Students” while closing the achievement gap. Please continue to work closely with your child’s teachers. An important component for studentsuccess is a strong home and school partnership. Attending school functions and discussing schoolwork with your child on a daily basis is very important. With your support, we will be able to provideall children with the best education possible. If you have specific questions regarding your child’s scores, please contact your school principal.Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to District 86.Sincerely,Charles E Coleman, Ed.D.Superintendent

At least 95% tested in reading and mathematics for every student group. If the current year participation rate is less than 95%, this condition maybe met if the average of the current and preceding year rates is at least 95%, or if the average of the current and two preceding years is at least 95%.Only actual participation rates are printed. If the participation rate printed is less than 95% and yet this school makes AYP, it means that the 95%condition was met by averaging.2. At least 85% meeting/exceeding standards in reading and mathematics for every group. For any group with less than 85% meeting/exceedingstandards, a 95% confidence interval was applied. Subgroups may meet this condition through Safe Harbor provisions. ***3. At least 91% attendance rate for non-high schools and at least 82% graduation rate for high schools.* Includes only students enrolled as of 05/01/2010.** Safe Harbor Targets of 85% or above are not printed.*** Subgroups with fewer than 45 students are not reported. Safe Harbor only applies to subgroups of 45 or more. In order for Safe Harbor to apply, asubgroup must decrease by 10% the percentage of scores that did not meet state standards from the previous year plus meet the other indicators(attendance rate for non-high schools and graduation rate for high schools) for the subgroup. For subgroups that do not meet their Safe HarborTargets, a 75% confidence interval is applied. Safe Harbor allows schools an alternate method to meet subgroup minimum targets on achievement.
