German Studies<br />
The Department <strong>of</strong> German <strong>of</strong>fers a variety<br />
<strong>of</strong> programs and courses designed to<br />
meet <strong>the</strong> different needs and interests<br />
<strong>of</strong> students on all levels; for beginners<br />
as well as for advanced students and<br />
native speakers. The program consists<br />
<strong>of</strong> language and topic courses, both in<br />
German and in English, covering a wide<br />
field <strong>of</strong> Germanic Studies including<br />
Mediaeval Studies and Yiddish Studies. As<br />
one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong>’s smaller departments,<br />
it provides substantiated knowledge and<br />
skills in intimate class settings.<br />

Health Studies<br />
Health Studies is a multidisciplinary<br />
program <strong>of</strong> undergraduate research and<br />
critical examination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> determinants<br />
<strong>of</strong> health. Health Studies students<br />
examine <strong>the</strong> different factors that have<br />
an impact on <strong>the</strong> health and well-being<br />
<strong>of</strong> individuals and communities in<br />
Canada as well as in a global context.<br />
The multidisciplinary approach covers<br />
biomedical aspects <strong>of</strong> health as well as<br />
<strong>the</strong> social, political and economic factors<br />
that generate healthy communities.<br />
Students in <strong>the</strong> specialist stream engage<br />
in a two-year research project culminating<br />
in an undergraduate research <strong>the</strong>sis.<br />
Students in <strong>the</strong> major stream also have<br />
an opportunity to engage directly in<br />
research projects. The Health Studies<br />
program also allows students to tailor<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir studies so that <strong>the</strong>y can focus on<br />
specific aspects <strong>of</strong> health and health care<br />
such as anthropology, women’s health,<br />
health and well-being <strong>of</strong> immigrant and<br />
marginalized communities or Aboriginal<br />
health.<br />

History<br />
Every political institution, social value<br />
and economic custom is <strong>the</strong> result<br />
<strong>of</strong> past change and is simultaneously<br />
being transformed. To understand our<br />
own society and <strong>the</strong> forces for change<br />
propelling it towards an uncertain future,<br />
it is <strong>the</strong>refore necessary to understand<br />
something <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past. The department<br />
<strong>of</strong>fers courses at most levels in American,<br />
Asian, African, Latin American, British,<br />
Canadian, Caribbean, East European,<br />
Russian, European, colonialism, post-<br />
colonialism and transnationalism,<br />
international relations, women and gender<br />
and mediaeval history.<br />
