Sociology<br />
Sociologists investigate how social<br />
relations shape human action. They<br />
analyze <strong>the</strong> opportunities and constraints<br />
that influence people’s behaviour in<br />
various contexts by systematically<br />
observing social milieux, carrying out<br />
surveys, analyzing <strong>of</strong>ficial statistics,<br />
inspecting historical documents, and<br />

South Asian Studies<br />
The Centre for South Asian Studies, a<br />
core community at <strong>the</strong> vibrant Asian<br />
Institute, <strong>of</strong>fers a South Asia Minor<br />
as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Contemporary Asian<br />
Studies program. Students take<br />
cutting-edge courses on Asia and its<br />
global significance today, and can <strong>the</strong>n<br />
choose to focus on <strong>the</strong> critical study <strong>of</strong><br />
South Asia. Drawing attention to current<br />
contexts and <strong>the</strong>ir historical antecedents,<br />
<strong>the</strong> South Asia minor adopts a rigorous,<br />
interdisciplinary approach in order to<br />
introduce students to cultural, political,<br />
economic and social formations. From<br />
<strong>the</strong> colonial invention <strong>of</strong> tradition to<br />
<strong>the</strong> politics <strong>of</strong> contemporary public<br />
culture, to <strong>the</strong> political economy <strong>of</strong><br />
democracy and economic development,<br />
<strong>the</strong> South Asia minor provides students<br />
with <strong>the</strong> grounding in both <strong>the</strong> content<br />
and method necessary for <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />
exploration <strong>of</strong> South Asia in a range <strong>of</strong><br />
departments across <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Spanish & Portuguese<br />
Spanish and Portuguese are among <strong>the</strong><br />
world’s most widely spoken languages.<br />
They share a Latin origin, and through<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir histories and current uses <strong>the</strong>y<br />
intersect with diverse cultures in Europe,<br />
<strong>the</strong> Americas, Africa and Asia. In<br />
addition to instruction in <strong>the</strong> Spanish<br />
and Portuguese languages, our programs<br />
explore <strong>the</strong> literatures and cultures <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Hispanic and Lusophone worlds. The<br />
study <strong>of</strong> Hispanic linguistics <strong>of</strong>fers special<br />
focus on <strong>the</strong> structure and diversity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Women and Gender Studies provides an<br />

Writing and Rhetoric courses teach<br />
students that reading and thinking<br />
critically are essential to developing<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Writing and Rhetoric program<br />
is that problem-solving and creative,<br />
persuasive, and effective writing depend<br />
