CBy Ty Hughes
hris was just filling
in for Judy when I
stopped in to check
out the Friday night
action at the Scorecard
Bar & Grill in
Northgate.
Even though
it was just a temporary gig for him,
Chris makes the Scorecard one of his
regular stops on Friday night for a
good dart tournament.
“We’ll usually get around 8 to 12
teams for our Friday night shoots”,
he says.
Mervin and Shirley were in tha
house! And they were celebrating too. It
was their 3-year wedding anniversary,
but they’ve been together for a whopping
Shirley and Mervin celebrate a milestone
26 years! Congratulations you two.
Mervin was playing in the tournament
with Joe as his partner, but
Shirley and all her girlfriends were
just playing each other on the end
board for fun.
It was a good turnout for their
weekly 12 & Under Blind Draw. Advertised
as a 200% Added, the bar will
kick in $350 if they get their 12 teams.
You guys tried a tournament at the
Scorecard lately Now’s a great time!
Just ask Dustin, who shuffled past me,
blurting out, “This place is special!”
Total hottie, Cecile was feelin’
frisky. She used to model in the Phillipines,
where her Uncle is actually
Unlimited Doubles
By Ty Hughes
Todd “The Jackyl” Jordan and
Dave “The Breeze” Bresee set aside
Saturday, February 12 for one very
important reason. The same exact
reason that 18 other qualified dart
players around the Puget Sound did
the very same thing.
Todd and Dave would be putting
up their Unlimited Doubles Challenge
Cup for grabs to anyone who thought
they might have the cojones to walk in
and play ’em for it! There were plenty
who did too.
Nine teams strolled into Cactus
Moon just as the UW Huskies took
the floor in a Pac-10 playoff. Since the
Cactus Moon is sports HQ for so many
fans, the bar was in a frenzy. Excited
sports fans, many of whom were there
to play darts, couldn’t sit still, enjoying
a little social interlude finally - a
well-deserved interlude, ‘cause there’s
no other kind.
As the game came to an incredibly
close finish, a raucous crowd explodes.
The Dawgs would move on in
the tournament.
Just as the crowd climaxed, the
Unlimited Doubles shootout was also
Parity Fridays at Stars
By Ty Hughes
I’m not sure if it’s Val’s awesome
personality behind the bar, or Miles
and Jodi who run the dart tournaments,
or the busy, upbeat crowd
(always with a handful of cuties) that
keeps Stars Bar & Grill in Federal
Way on everybody’s radar.
Val is their lead bartender. She’s
been here for some ten years now,
and she knows everyone by name and
exactly what they prefer to drink. The
smile on her face never fades, and
she keeps it real with the customers.
Just a really cool chick. Pretty
too! You should check out her Friday
night partner behind the bar, Monica.
Together, they keep a tight ship at
Stars and nobody gets hurt. But the
fun runs rampant!
Miles and Jodi, who are literally
famous round these here parts, keep
the darts flyin’ high and often. Why
every single Friday night you could
dream of, Miles and Jodi take up
residence at Stars, and your five bucks
too. It gets even better though… from
there, the bar will kick in whatever it
takes to make sure there’s $500 bucks
in the kitty for all you precious dart
players out there to enjoy! And play for.
We can’t forget to mention that you’re
even as she threw her darts.
The Scorecard is
a great atmosphere for
darts, pool, and people
all the way around.
If you don’t like the
Blind Draws, come in
on a Saturday at 9pm
and sign up to play
in their weekly 18 pt.
Bring, same added.
This Saturday,
they will be hosting
another Bad Girls’ 12
& Under Shootout at
8:30pm. Be sure and get in on that
action ladies! $400 Added based on 14
teams. Make it happen!
Val and Monica hold down the fort at Stars in Federal Way
gonna have to earn your money.
We popped in on a Friday early in
March. Miles and Jodi had the room
full of players that had been paired up
by rating to keep things close. It was
cool seeing some of the unpredictable
pairings, but they all had good things
to say about their partners.
Steve and Aletha took 3rd place,
leaving Star (yes, her name is really
Star, in fact, it’s actually Star Sprinkles,
I kid you not!) and Miles to battle
it out with Melissa and Kevin for the
final match. Melissa was off the hook
that night, throwing well above her
rating, and it got her and Kevin all
the way to the finals before her aim
went south. Miles and Star snuck in
and yanked 1st place right out from
under them. Everybody was smiling
regardless. Good times.
What are you rated It doesn’t
really matter, because you’re always
gonna find your place at Stars. Sometimes
they’ll throw a Hi/Lo Parity
Draw. Sometimes they’ll do a Cricket
Only Bring, or a Ladies Night Bring,
or a Birthday Shoot Bring. Either way,
you get to spend time with Miles, Jodi,
Val, Monica, and even Seth over there
running the karaoke system. You’re
gonna have fun, and besides, that
twenty bucks in your pocket needs a
new home, dontcha think
I could go on and on about the
party going on over at Stars in Federal
Way off 312th and Pac. Hwy, but
instead of a bunch of words, we’ll post
pictures! Way better! Plus, we’ll point
you to their ad in this here newspaper
for details, and to their Facebook page;
Stars Barand GrillFans. Regardless
of what you find yourself doing this
Friday night, be sure to get your butt
over to Stars for good friends, good
food and drinks, and good times. Don’t
forget them dart thingies either, you’ll
thank me later.
Cosmic Darts hit
Channel Marker
By Scott Kringle
Edmond’s Channel Marker
Restaurant and Bar
put on quite a spectacle
over the weekend of
March 18. Friday and
Saturday were packed
with excitement, when
Channel Marker hosted their 2nd Cosmic
Dart event in as many months.
“ T h is is a
really fun dart
shoot”, we heard
someone say as
they stepped up to
the throwline. Directly
in front of
them stood a glowin-the-dark
board,
hence the cosmic
part. Shooting on
a board lit up with
blacklights and
bright, glowing web colors separating
the segments can be an interesting
experience to say the least. The room
lights are turned down nice and low
so the neon, glow-in-the-dark boards
just radiate off the walls.
Thirty some odd players dove into
the action, feeling pretty cosmic themselves.
The team point max ranged all
the way from 6 to 18 points. Chris and
Rich out of West Seattle cosmically
found themselves at Channel Marker
that night and wanted to join in on
a fun tournament. Shooting some
for their final hurdle to emerge
from out of the Loser’s Bracket.
As if they fully expected to
be there, David Foster and Steve
“Stinky” Roth advanced, to again
come face to face with the very team
that put them on the wrong side of
the chart in the first place. They were
playing for the Pickled Onion and had
a little something to prove. More than
“This is fun,” Chris said, “We’ve
and it’s really fun.”
Neon orange, green, pink, and
purple colors lit up the entire bar.
Renee, Co-coordinator for Channel
Marker said, “It’s a great way to break
up the same old
and if you’ve
it’s something
That is if you like 80 degree
weather with a warm breeze on your
neck and soft, lapping surf, seashells
and bikinis… gross!
Why would Chris Sheilds, or
anyone for that matter, want to leave
Seattle’s perma-gray, borderline freezing,
all four seasons-a-day Pacific
Northwest for all that warmth and
sunshine What’s the only reason you
true Northwesterners would make the
jump to living on those gawd-awful
beaches of Hawaii Family, that’s
what. And it was the same for Chris
Sheilds last month. His sister needed
him and he mobilized for her. Whattaguy,
huh! Life’s rough, and then we
go to friggin’ HAWAII!
No but seriously, he was honestly
super-bummed out to move out of the
Pacific Northwest, even though he was
headed to vacationland. Chris had
amassed a butt-load of really close
friends up here over the last 12 years,
and he could hardly bear the thought
A farewell toast of friendship
of leaving them all behind.
On Friday, February 25, Chris
was brutally aware of the reality of
leaving some of his best friends for
good, when the entire bunch of ‘em,
all at once it seemed, gathered at Sluggers
for a sad day of farewell. It was
22 degrees outside, and he shows up
in his signature shorts and flip flops.
Chris’ involvement in the community
of dart players on the Eastside was
faithful and true. His influence runs
deep within his core group.
There was an airplane seat with
Chris’ name on it, and it was leaving
Seattle in just a few short days. The
levity of this moment was not lost on
him. Overcome with emotion, his closest
friends lavished him with hugs and
kind words of love and support. Chris
and his witty self had become part of
our daily landscape. He will definitely
be missed, but everyone is encouraged
to keep up with Chris’ tropical escapades
on Facebook.
And for those of us left behind,
we know exactly what it is that keeps
us enamored with the great Pacific
Northwest, don’t we But we’d be the
first to tell you that it’s our friends
that make it our home.
Mixed Limited
Cup Blowout
By Scott Kringle
On Saturday afternoon, March
26, Cactus Moon asked if the next
challenger for the Mixed Limited Cup
would please “Come On Down”.
That very opponent would come
from Ringers Pub, Mountlake Terrace.
Tim Esther, Rosalyn Taylor, Ben Evans,
and Crissy Hebert came strutting
through Cactus Moon’s doors with the
expectation of walking out as the new
Mixed Limited Cup champions.
Of course Cactus Moon’s Corby
Sloan, Shannon Livington, Mark Hinton,
and Stephanie Stotesbery were
not going to let anything walk out of
their bar without a fight. Having just
captured the cup from Cloud 9, it was
imperative that they survive their first
challenge.
Ringers took the first two games,
but after nine, Cactus Moon had a 6-2
lead over Ringers.
“I love my new darts”, Mark for
Cactus Moon says. “When I keep my
elbow in, I shoot a lot better with my
new darts.”
After fourteen games, Cactus
Moon held a 9-5 lead over Ringers, and
both Mark and Shannon said Corby
was really starting to throw awesome
darts. He warmed up hitting Bull after
Bull, and started the match sorta
cold. He mounted a comeback and was
throwing very well.
After nineteen games, it looked
like Cactus Moon was going to come
away unscathed, holding a 14-5 lead.
But Ringers took game 20 and was
working hard to get more wins. With
the way Cactus was shooting, any
team would struggle to win these
games. Cactus Moon was just too
tough, and in the end, won the match
17-6, and kept their challenge cup.
Nice shooting.
Women’s Cup still
at Pickled Onion
PBy Scott Kringle
ickled Onion had taken
the Limited Cup by
force in mid-February,
and recently, they put
up the Women's Cup
to the next challenging
team. That team
would come from Edmonds, Washington,
and they were hungry.
Channel Marker’s Renee Skinner,
Michelle Brower, Christi Moffett
and Rosalyn "Can't Get Enough
Darts" Taylor, traveled to Renton to
take on the defending Women's Cup
Champs, Pickled Onion’s Lenna Shiley,
Trish Brown, Sarah Sunde, and
Stacy Braunworth.
This would be the first time Pickled
Onion would defend their new cup,
and needless to say, they were excited
to get the match underway. Medalist’s
3-game rule would be recognized, as
voted on by both teams, and Channel
Marker wins the coin flip. One fan
said, observing the 3-game rule makes
these cups so much more fun to play.
You just never know which team will
come out on fire.
The first game out of the chute
was team ’01, giving both teams multiple
opportunities to win the game - it
looked to be a long day of darts at the
Pickled Onion. By game 12, the match
was all tied up six wins each.
Lenna’s roommate Michelle came
out to offer moral support to the Pickled
Onion girls and ended up staying
for the whole match.
Pickled Onion had a 5 and Under
shoot gathering steam as Pickled Onion
and Channel Marker competed head-tohead
for the Women’s Cup. It wasn’t long
before the bar crowded around the girls
in support of their team.
The match went back and forth
from start to finish. There were at least
eight games up for grabs for either team,
if only they could take out the out.
By game 29, Channel Marker
was holding onto a one-game lead, but
Pickled Onion’s vociferous fan support
propelled their team onto a 3-game
win streak, earning them a match
win for the day!
Great shooting by both teams.
Congratulations to Pickled Onion on
successfully retaining the Women’s
Cup. Best of luck to the next team on
the list for this one.
Falling to them, and propelling
them forward was Jeff Springer Jr.
and Brian Smith, who settled for 3rd
place and $90 to split.
Darin and Rigel also made their
presence known that afternoon, slipping
into a cool 4th place, earning
twenty bucks each.
Best out of five, no handicap,
straight up darts filled the bar with
hope that day. One by one, those hopes
were stepped on, crushed, and ground
into oblivian. There may still be remnants
in the carpet, so step lively.
Wasn’t the case however for Todd
and Dave, defending Champions, representing
the host location, Cactus
Moon. They figured they’d taken this
team before and could do it again.
The top two teams sized each
other up during corks, and off they
went. As they battled, the rest of us
searched for somebody prettier to talk
to. But, as things go, it would be Todd
“The Jackyl” and Dave “The Breeze”
blowing in to swipe the last bit of remaining
hope left in the room. As if
to say, “Psych!”, they opened up their
house to the thiefs, but sent them all
packing, empty-handed.
David and Stinky made off with
$180 and their tail between their
legs, while reigning Champs, Todd
and Bresee snagged $240, and kept
their beloved Unlimited Doubles
Challenge Cup.
Can anybody beat this team!
Surely somebody can topple this team!
You’ll have your chance again in May,
so keep an eye out for details to come.
Congrats guys, and thanks to
everybody for coming out for a day of
dart goodness.
these guys were throwing great darts
with their opposite arm. At one point
Doug and Jimmy went head to head in
an opposite arm, Low Ton battle. They
were almost throwing their ratings!
Jimmy kept offering twenty
bucks to the first person to hit a High
hit it. The
National Dart Association
Launches New Website
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The AMOA-National Dart Association
(NDA) launched a new website at its existing location, www.NDAdarts.
com. The new site has a vibrant, new look and many features to enhance
the user’s experience.
One of the main new features of the site is the online shop where
players can purchase official NDA merchandise. In the future, the NDA
will expand merchandise, offering more products to the public, players
and operator members alike. International rankings, the NDA event
calendar, ThrowLines and Team Dart information are all streamlined
for easy access. The site also outlines the Official Rules of Play and prospective
referees are able to take the Know the Rules test and register for
the Referee Certification seminar. Another exciting feature is the Find a
League application where players from around the world have the ability
to find local NDA leagues.
“The new design incorporates many new features and a fresh look,”
said Chris Warren, NDA president. “The site is easy to navigate and
provides access to view all NDA events, purchase merchandise, league
information and much more. One way the NDA is making it easier to take
full advantage of your membership is offering the NDA shop. Be sure to
check out www.NDAdarts.com; it’s another one of those great benefits of
belonging to the NDA.”
The NDA event calendar has expanded to allow operator members
to submit local events. Players now have a central calendar to view local,
regional, national and international darting events. NDA-affiliated state
tournaments will also have an increased presence on the site. In addition,
the rankings application has been improved so operator members can
keep the rankings area updated so players will be able to more accurately
measure their standing amongst the world’s best.
Seven birthday parties at Ringers
By Scott Kringle
Ever been to a party where you
were the center of attention and your
name wasn’t Chris Mackie
Well, Ringer’s Pub in Mountlake
Aaron Perez with his Grandmother Diane and Fiancee Skylar
Terrace hosted not one, or two, but
seven birthday parties on Friday,
March 25!
Family and friends gathered together
to celebrate the birthdays of fellow
dart shooter, Aaron Perez, and his
good friend Brandon. One was turning
twenty-six and the other twenty-five,
but neither Aaron nor Brandon would
divulge who was actually the older of
the two, but we all knew.
Aaron is still just a kid according
to his Grandmother Diane Perez,
who came out to Ringers to celebrate
her grandson’s birthday. Vibrant
and youthful
herself, Diane
had a great
time meeting
Aaron’s friends
from around
the dart world.
dish to share,
plus two giant
cakes that
went over huge
with everyone
that came out.
A a r o n
also had a very
special guest
there, someone
who would soon become a much bigger
part of his life. Skylar Liles would
soon become Aarons wife. Skylar, she
4x7 Cup; Dawsons at Ringers
By Scott Kringle
With March Madness well-underway,
Washington and Arizona were in
the final match to determine the Pac 10
Champion. Where else would I be, but
at Ringer’s Pub in Mountlake Terrace,
where the 4x7 Cup was being hoisted in
the air, up for challenge once again
Dawson’s Bar & Grill, Tacoma,
stepped up to the plate with four of
their best players at the drop of a hat
when we had to skip over a few teams
on the list. Awesome!
Ringers’ Championship team
consisted of Brett Brophy, Dustin
Curtis, Rob Allemany, and Travis
Stocking. These guys would not be
laying down for Dawson’s team of Pat
Farrell, Anthony “Adot” Dotson, Ron
Clement, and Sean Christian.
After collecting the $200 sponsor
fee, plus the customary $20 coordinator
fee from each team, the match
was a go!
Right off the bat, Dawson’s proved
they had come to play by taking the
first four games in a row.
Ringers finally won game five, and
Brett yells, “Put us on the board!”
But Dawson’s would not let up.
Maybe it was their awesome fans;
Christina Krautler, Danette Burrell,
and Brenda Webb.
Ringer’s was not without support
of their support own. Dustin’s mom
Joan, and brother Steven, both came
in to cheer on their boys.
Though Ringer’s would not sit
back on their heels and not put up a
fight, despite their cheering section,
Dawson’s was holding onto a 10-5 lead
after 15 games.
is warm, caring individual who loves
being near friends and family. She
also has a good-sized rock on her finger,
so hands off guys. Aaron did real
good in the girl department.
The seven birthday parties at
Ringers all started around 7:00pm,
going late into the night. They also
had a dart shoot that brought twentythree
teams to the forefront. The bar
was way busy, but when you’re with
great friends and family, you can’t
have a better time.
Aaron and Brandon celebrate a birthday
The bar erupted repeatedly for
Husky’s basketball as they went on
to win by a single basket. More determined
than ever, Dawson’s was putting
the pressure on Ringers, taking
a 12-7 lead over the defenders.
Dustin took out a 170 (High Ton)
to win game twenty-three. “It’s on!”
the Ringers team exclaimed hanging
in there to see the 30th game, all knotted
up at fifteen wins each.
Heading into it’s fifth hour, both
teams were still very focused with
so much at stake. But, finally, after
thirty-two games, Dawson’s would
play the spoiler today, peeling the cup
from the tight grasp of some defeated
Ringers players, and head on down the
road, southbound.
Great match guys! Congrats to
Dawsons, the newest 4x7 Cup holders.
