This month Iwant to explore a subject that recentlyaffected me, and can affect anyone atany time, so listen up.There are many ailments in thisworld, but this one was news to me,and s c aredthe bejesuso u t o f m etoo. I awokeearly one Saturdaymorning, mouthdry from thec h a n g e i nRocky and Kristine climate, andp r o b a b l ysleeping with my mouth wide open, snoring like an Ox. Everything in theback of my throat was all stuck together.I sat up in a panic, grabbed a bottleof water and downed it, but felt like Iwas trying to swallow my own tongue,or throat, or some part of my anatomythat just wasn't going down!Grabbed my trusty flashlightand gazed deep into my throat andI couldn't believe what I was seeing. That little dangley thing in the backof your throat, which I now know iscalled a Uvula, was swollen so largethat it appeared it had been replacedwith a thumb. No lie! It scared me todeath. No wonder I couldn't swallow, could barely talk, and felt like therewas a marshmallow stuck in the backSee Karaoke Corner on page 5packed full with incredible talent, including many living legends.Performances by The DailyFlash, Aury & Pamela Moore, SomarMacek, Goldy McJohn (Steppenwolf), Lee Oskar (War), Jerry Miller (MobyGrape), Berry Curtis (The Kingsmen),not to mention, the birthday boyhimself, Roger Fisher, Steve Fossen,Mike Derosier (founding members ofHEART), and many more. The hamburgers at Steaks &Spirits are fantastic! A very good night,to say the least. Roger can really throwdown one hell of a party. Can't waituntil next year!Party on! Be safe.www.nwkaraokeguide.net3

Tim’s tavern; seattle, waCheck out Katybelle’s brandnew karaoke at Tim’s Tavernon N 105th in Seattle, aself-proclaimed Retro DiveBar, just up the road fromthe Rickshaw.Seattle area karaoke fan, Katybelle, formed Katybelle Productionswhen she was searching for somethingto do with her extra time. Seemed likea perfect fit, and since hosting herTuesday thru Thursday night karaokeat Tim’s Tavern, she’s managed tobuild a nice little following already. The bar is small, but Tim’s gotTim’s Tavern presents Katybelle!plans to knock out the wall and takeover the neighboring space.Come out and sing with Katybellenext week at Tim’s Tavern. Everyoneis really nice and welcoming.See their ad here for details.Tim’s customers love Host KatybelleKaraoke CornerContinued from page 3of my throat.Initially, I began to panic, fearingthe worst. Cancer? Was my throatgoing to close up? Could I swallow itand choke myself to death? I wasn'tsure what to do. I tried to show peoplearound me, but they all freaked out, telling me I had strep-throat, that Ineeded to call 911. Or, “Oh, it's justyour tonsils....” I don't even own aset of those anymore! I tried ice, butnothing. I tried tea, honey, lemon, gargling with salt water, ibuprophen, claratin, and drinking a ton of water.Nothing was helping.I turned to the internet, andthank goodness I did. I found severalarticles about this condition that I nowknow is called "Uvulitis". Apparently ithappens to a lot of people, and unlessit is in fact some type of infection (i.e.strep, mono) there isn't a whole lota medical doctor can do. Prescribesome meds for the pain perhaps, antibiotics for an obvious infection, but that's about it. There's also a laserprocedure where they can remove theuvula, but the uvula is responsible forparts of speech, blocking food fromyour nasal passages and for deliveringsound through singing! So the question is, how and whydo folks get this condition, and howdo you avoid it happening to you?First off, a lot of people whodrink a lot of alcohol before bedtimeare very prone to this condition. Also, people with sleep apnea, who snore, orsleep with their mouths open, are alsoinclined to be at risk. Basically whathappens is that little thing that looks likea punching bag, becomes one from theforce of severe snoring, accompaniedby a dry environment and/or dehydration. It gets the hell beat out of it whileyou are sleeping and snoring and whenyou wake up, you feel like you've gotsandpaper for a mouth.Best ways to avoid this painfuljourney? 1. Don't drink a lot of alcoholSee Karaoke Corner on page 14www.nwkaraokeguide.net4

Floatation Device; gig harbor, waA trio of hoststo keep you singingBy Ty HughesYou cannot expect to spend anentire evening of singing at the FloatationDevice in Gig Harbor without gettingout of your chair for some singin’and dancin’. It simply cannot be done. We’ve done our due diligence. Those three sweethearts hostingkaraoke at the Float on Thursdays andFridays are experts at getting everyoneinvolved and having the time of theirlives. Teri, Mary, and Tamara, aka;“Yestrday”, have a crapload of experiencein the business. They flat knowhow to work a crowd into a frenzy, and they do! It is estimated that 90% of all karaokehosts don’t pay for the karaoke music they use for theirshows. Even if this number is only 50%, the harm theyare doing to the industry cannot be disputed. I spent therest of the weekend miserable, and part of the following weekhoping that it would eventually get better. It took almost anentire week for it to feel relatively normal again, but I won'tbe leaving my sleep apnea machine at home ever again, I canassure you of that. And in case you were wondering, no, Ididn't have a single drop of alcohol, which would have madethe condition almost deadly from what I have researched.Scary stuff! There are many, many ailments that can affect thevoice, and for those of us who sing, it's important to sharethese stories with fellow singers.Next month I hope to bring you more helpful informationabout conditions that you can avoid or be aware of.That's it for this month!
