Jimmy Jacks; Everett, WAMixed Limited Cup goes roundsBy Joseph MathiasSaturday, February20; It was abeautiful summerday… er,no it’s a beautifullysunnywinter day atJimmy Jacks inLynnwood andtwo teams havegathered to battlefor the Mixed Limited Cup. RepresentingJimmy Jacks was RobertAncog, Tami Payne, David Ortmannand Joanna Ortmann.Jimmy Jacks was defending theircup against an O’Henry’s team, allthe way up from Puyallup, includingMarcie Chaput, Brenda Soria, ChrisVaughn and Brookes Marbett. <strong>The</strong>match started out rough with bothteams busting game one a couple oftimes, but it would be O’Henry’s thatwould finally end the game. <strong>The</strong>n,after Robert and Tami both hit LowTons to win game two, O’Henry’sMarcie would hit a 5-count in thefirst Cricket game, and to follow thatup Brookes would nail a White Horseand run away with game three.O’Henry’s continued their strongCricket play to extend their lead by two,but with back-to-back Hat Tricks comingfrom Brookes and Chris, O’Henry’sextended their lead after 11 games to8-3. And just when you think JimmyJacks is finished, in game 13, Roberthit a couple of 6-counts, and in game14, David stepped it up with some powershots of his own to help Jimmy Jacksget their first three wins in a row.<strong>The</strong> teams traded games back andforth before Jimmy Jacks stepped it upagain, and after 24 games, the scorewas tied 12-12. O’Henry’s, who wasupset over letting a 5-game lead slipaway, stepped back up to win games 25and 26 to regain a 2-game lead. Onceagain both teams took turns winninggames, but as they’ve done all day, theO’Henry’s team won game 31 to winthe match and bring the Mixed MemorialCup home to Puyallup. <strong>The</strong>y wereproud to present O’Henry’s with theirvery first challenge cup.Jimmy Jacks fought hard to overcomea 5-game deficit and at one point,made the match close.Congratulations to O’Henry’son winning an exciting and fun towatch match!5O’Henry’s Brookes, Brenda, Chris and Marcie take the Mixed Limited from Jimmy Jack’s<strong>April</strong> <strong>2010</strong> - www.themedallion.net


10<strong>The</strong> Steel-Tip Report<strong>April</strong> <strong>2010</strong> - www.themedallion.netBy Bob Ross, President, South Sound Darts AssociationIt’sbeen a busy coupleof months for localshooters, and thingsaren't slowing downa bit. <strong>April</strong> will bringthe Oregon Open - thelongest-running steel-tip tournament inthe U.S. Plus, the annual Salmon Harvesttournament in Victoria, as well asthe start of SSDA's Spring leagues.<strong>The</strong> Home Plate Tavern in Tacomawas the scene for the Fifth SouthSound Open March 5-6. Friday nightKevin Luke and Jim Tederman wonthe blind draw, with Melvin and metaking second. In the mixed doublesevent Saturday morning, Carole Herriott(my lovely wife) and I beat KevinLuke and Christina Oakley in thefinal. Carole was in the winner's spotagain for ladies' singles, reclaimingher title from Deb Parker.Twenty-six men participatedin the other gender's singles event,with newbie (to steel-tip, anyway)Dave Bresee knocking out DaveFoster, Allen Nutter, and yourstruly on his way to the finalagainst “<strong>The</strong> Godfather”Steve Arionus. Steve hadgot past Warren Mundt,Pat Breithaupt andJohn Evans in theprevious rounds.In the best-of-9 final,Dave got the firsttwo games, but Stevecame roaring back and w o nthe match 5-3. Earlier, in a playofffor seeding in the knockout portion,Kevin Luke popped a 170 finishagainst Pat Breithaupt.Saturday night was a zoo, even for“<strong>The</strong> Plate”. Forty players packed theroom for the open doubles, with threeteams of women stepping up to thechallenge. When the dust had settled,once again Dave Foster and KevinLuke won the final over Melvin Cherryand Mike Christensen. As usual, greatthanks to Roger and the crew for alltheir hard work and support.BACK to “<strong>The</strong> Plate” Sundaymorning for the American Darts OrganizationWinmau Masters Regionaltournament. Nine men competedfor one spot at the Nationals, andsix women competed in a separateevent, with each player going threegames against everybody else. After24 games, Bob Given, Pat Breithauptand yours truly were tied with 15wins each. Per ADO rules, 3-wayties must be played off in a one-gameround robin until one player wins twogames. I beat Bob in the first game,then checked out a 99 against Pat towin a trip to Houston. On the ladies'side, Carole won, so if I have to go toHouston, at least I'll have good company.Winners in Houston go on to theWorld Masters in England!Sixteen players met at the HomePlate Tavern in Tacoma on February21 for the third SuperShoot. “<strong>The</strong>Plate” has blind draw doubles tournaments(nearly) every Saturday night;weekly winners are automaticallyentered into the SuperShoot with theirentry fees waived. $3 is collected fromevery player and set aside for the SuperShoot,and Roger adds 50% to thereserve funds. <strong>The</strong> total payout was$720, first place went to John Evansand Melvin Cherry ($300).Beautiful Surrey, British Columbiawas the site of the Greater VancouverOpen March 12-14, a World DartsFederation ranked event. George Mackenand Dion Laviolette won thedraw doubles Friday night, duringwhich Carole Herriott hit a 170 out,the first of her career.Saturday morning was ladies'singles, won by Cindy Pardy over SallyFong Hoon, with Carole taking a jointfifth. Rick Arnott and Dion Laviolettetook first in men's doubles, waxingSean Smyth and Gerry Convery 4-0in the final. During the mixed triosSaturday night, the eventual championsClint Clarkson, Cindy Pardy andGreg Lewis combined for an 11-dartgame, just an incredible feat for a triosteam. In the men's singles event, ourown Mike Baxter knocked out RobHeckman in a best-of-five match, possiblythe biggest upset of the weekend.B.C.'s Sean Smyth took down KenMacNeil in the final 5-0.Alycia Hope and Sally Fong Hoonwon ladies' doubles. Alycia's first tripto the stage at a big tournament, andshe played great. <strong>The</strong> final event ofthe weekend was mixed doubles, andmy good friend Bill Hammond, Jr.and his partner Sally won, 15 minutesbefore Bill's birthday! And what a greattime they had with all their friends.Keith, Joe and Lee… “Happybirthday boys”!Day tourney started about 3pm,with people from all ends came outto party with great friends. Pre,Trey, Adot and David to name a few.Seventeen teams showed up early.<strong>The</strong> winners ended up being Pat andMikki in first place, and Arron andAngie in second.Kathy, Danette, Brenda, and everyonestuck around during the breakbetween tournaments and had a greattime celebrating the boys’ special day.After many birthday shots, we stayedfocused enough to get through thenext tournament. <strong>The</strong> boys continuedto have a great time and preparedthemselves for the next shoot.<strong>The</strong> next event started around7pm with 14 teams showing. AgainO’Henry’s was full of fun people - notjust the O’Henry’s crowd either, butothers too. Del, Jeff, Marcie, Kathy,Chris and many more warmed up andpsyched up for the task ahead.After all the battles and the takingout of games out, we ended up withPre and Angie in first place and Chrisand Andy in second place.If you’re one of those looking for aplace to have a good time without thedrama, then O’Henry’s is the placefor you.
