compliance with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena provided that the <strong>College</strong> makes an attempt to<br />
notify the student; appropriate persons in an emergency to protect the health and safety of students or other<br />
persons.<br />
Inspection and Review of Records<br />
Students have the right to inspect and review their education records. The <strong>College</strong> requires prior notice and<br />
reserves the right to deny access to confidential letters and recommendations associated with admission,<br />
employment/job placement, or honors, to other records to which the student has waived the rights of<br />
inspection, and to records containing information about more than one student.<br />
Challenge of Records<br />
Students have the right to challenge records they believe to be inaccurate, incomplete, or incorrectly<br />
disseminated. If the outcome of the challenge is unsatisfactory, the student has the right to a hearing. If the<br />
outcome of the hearing is unsatisfactory, the student may submit an explanatory statement for inclusion in the<br />
educational record. Such a statement shall become part of the information contained in the educational record<br />
and disclosed with it.<br />
Records of Requests and Disclosures<br />
The <strong>College</strong> will maintain a record of requests and disclosures of non-directory information. Records of requests<br />
shall include the names and addresses of the persons who requested the information and their legitimate<br />
interests in the information. Records of requests will not be maintained for those requests made by students for<br />
their own use; those disclosures made in response to written requests from the student; those made by school<br />
officials; and those specified in Directory Information.<br />
Right of Complaint<br />
Students who believe that the <strong>College</strong> is not complying with the requirements of the Family Educational Rights<br />
and Privacy Act or regulations issued by the Department of Education to implement the Act may file complaints<br />
in writing to: The FERPA Office, U.S. Department of Education, 4000 Maryland Avenue, SW, Washington, DC<br />
20202.<br />
Student Right to Know<br />
As mandated by the Public Law 101-542, the Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act, as amended by<br />
Public Law 102-26, the Higher Education Technical Amendments of 1991, <strong>SMCC</strong> student completion information<br />
is available upon request from the <strong>College</strong>’s Office of Institutional Research. Information concerning crimes on<br />
campus is available on the <strong>College</strong> website.<br />
Student Handbook/Code of Conduct<br />
The Compass, <strong>SMCC</strong>’s student handbook, is designed to introduce students to the many aspects of life at <strong>SMCC</strong>,<br />
including policies related to enrollment and student life, rules and regulations, and safety tips. The student<br />
handbook serves as a companion piece to the <strong>SMCC</strong> <strong>Catalog</strong>, which outlines the <strong>College</strong>’s academic information,<br />
requirements, academic programs, course descriptions, and more. Students are expected to become familiar<br />
with both publications for a thorough understanding of <strong>College</strong> regulations.<br />
Harassment, Sexual Harassment, Discrimination, & Affirmative Action<br />
Harassment Prohibited<br />
The <strong>College</strong> recognizes the dignity and right of individuals to work, learn, play and live in an environment which<br />
is free of substantial unlawful interference. Consequently, the <strong>College</strong> is committed to preventing and<br />
responding promptly and effectively to harassment of <strong>College</strong> students, employees, volunteers or visitors.<br />
Sexual Harassment Prohibited<br />
Sexual harassment is prohibited at the <strong>College</strong> under both state and federal laws and <strong>College</strong> and MCCS policies.<br />
