Spring 2009

Letter From The President
GAIN Board of Directors
In the short turn around between Round Up issues, bull
sales, and the Cattlemen’s Classic, Monte and I are putting
our heads together for this letter.
First we’d like to welcome Brian Bauer as a new member of
the board of directors. GAIN is currently working on a few
new upcoming projects as well such as the GAIN beef raffle
and GAIN semen auction. Details on these fundraisers will
be out soon. Also, the GAIN Tour will be coming back this
summer potentially in central Nebraska. Needless to say,
there are many activities and projects coming up; we look
forward to your support and ideas.
Bull sales this spring have been very active with excellent
demand for the commercial bulls. It is with utmost importance
that we keep supporting each other and continue to
promote the breed as the Continental Breed of Choice. We
are, and with more carcass testing and breed improvement,
we always will be. Support of your organization lends to
more marketing and advertising opportunities. In turn this
leads to even more interest and demand of our breed and
genetics.
Craig Livingston said it best when describing the excitement
in our breed. “The five year plan is in place and the idea of a
“Free Lunch” is catching the attention of commercial producers
across the great state of Nebraska. The opportunity is
perfect to G.A.I.N. attention for Gelbvieh-Balancer genetics.
The Gelbvieh Association In Nebraska (G.A.I.N.) is focused on
raising the awareness and acceptability of Gelbvieh-Balancer
cattle in our state. That’s where you come in. G.A.I.N. needs
your help with fresh ideas, comments and new volunteers.
With all of us working together and being diligent in attracting
commercial cattlemen to Gelbvieh-Balancer genetics, the
Gelbvieh Association In Nebraska can GAIN a much larger
share of the commercial cattle business. Our state has the
best cattle in the breed and some of them are at your place,
why not work with G.A.I.N. and together we can capture a
bigger share of the “free lunch” crowd.”
AGA Board Approves Aggressive Policy to Eliminate AM Gene
The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Board of Directors
recently approved an aggressive plan and policy to eliminate the
Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM) gene from the Gelbvieh herdbook.
Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM) is a genetic defect found in certain lines of
Angus cattle. The Balancer® cattle registered with the American Gelbvieh
Association have the possibility of being AM carriers if the Angus genetics
used in the hybrid seedstock carry the AM gene.
The AGA Board began discussions on a policy at its January
2009 board meeting following recommendations from the Rules &
Bylaws Committee during the 2009 AGA National Convention in Denver.
With input from the membership, the AGA Board and staff
began crafting a policy that will eliminate the AM gene from the
herdbook.
“The AGA Board approved an aggressive plan that requires all
bulls applying for an A.I. permit to be tested AM-free before an A.I. permit
will be issued,” explains Dr. Wayne Vanderwert, AGA Executive Director.
“The AGA is also testing the 30 most popular A.I. sires as a risk assessment
for our breed.”
Vanderwert says the Gelbvieh herdbook’s exposure to the AM
gene is relatively low, but obviously may increase as more Angus sires and
dams are tested. “We are in a good place and the policy will help us
eliminate AM carriers from the herdbook with a step-up policy over the
next three years. By January 1, 2012, all Balancer cattle will need to test
AM-Free to be eligible for registry.”
The other component that makes the Gelbvieh policy more
aggressive in identifying AM-Carrier animals is the requirement to test all
AM-50 females in the herdbook. An AM-50 animal has one or more AM-
Carrier parents or more than one AM-Carrier grandparent.
“AGA is underwriting testing on the first 500 AM-50 females in
an effort to identify the AM-Free and AM-Carrier females,” explains
Vanderwert. “We aren’t just concentrating on the sire-side of the
pedigree to tackle this problem. By underwriting 500 tests this will cover
virtually all of the AM-50 females currently identified in the Gelbvieh
herdbook.”
“The AGA’s policy is aggressive and tackles the AM genetic
defect from multiple angles,” says Vanderwert. “The ultimate goal is to
eliminate the AM-gene from the Gelbvieh herdbook. This policy goes the
distance to ensure the goal is met.”
A complete copy of the Gelbvieh policy and plan to eliminate
the AM-gene is available on the AGA web site at www.gelbvieh.org.
On The Gelbvieh Trail
Cedar Top Ranch - Stapleton, NE
Not only was the weather outstanding, it was a pleasure to
view the powerful genetics at the ranch that Scott Starr has
put together for his 2009 Maternal Empire Bull Sale. The
coming two year old bulls in the offering with Johnson
Gelbvieh in Burwell, NE were with out a doubt some of the
most efficient, functional, and problem free sets that I’ve ran
across this spring. The bulls are developed for reducing
input costs and with the bulls never seeing a kernel of corn,
they still express all of their genetic potential for performance.
Muscle and growth in the bulls was outstanding while still
exhibiting the needed fleshing ability.
Following up the Ranch visit, I thought the bulls walking
through the sell ring in Burwell kept developing into the
potential herd bulls buyers are looking for. The sire groups
that stuck out to me the most at both the Ranch and Sale
were the Connealy Industry, DDA Emblazon 27C and CTR
Good Night bulls. Buyers bought with confidence and can
be promised that in the future they can keep investing in the
CTR program with efficiency and fertility packed into one
performance package. Contact Scott to ask about their
Voss Farms - Bruning, NE
In South Central Nebraska; Leroy, Neal, and Cory Voss have
been raising Gelbvieh cattle for the last 15 years. The business
started when Neal and Cory became involved in
showing Gelbvieh cattle through 4-H which resulted in
growing a cattle operation to 75 head. Leroy farms, Neal is
the Feed Mill Manager with Aurora Cooperative, and Cory is
majoring in Agriculture Business at South Central Community
College in Beatrice. Voss Farms works to produce easy
keeping cattle with good dispositions while incorporating
calving ease and performance. Due to Voss Farms being a
young and growing cattle operation, the cattle produced on
the farm are current with the trends of the cattle market.
Voss Farms is incorporating Red Angus and Gelbvieh cows
and bulls into the herd in order to increase hybrid vigor.
They strive to produce fast growing calves that remain on
feed for short periods of time but yield high quality carcasses.
Voss Farms began selling seedstock in 2005 and consign to
GAIN Sale Season
On The Gelbvieh Trail
So far the sale season has seamed strong in the Nebraska
Gelbvieh and Balancer production sales. With most sales just
completing, most sale reports are either hot off the press or not
completed yet. There has been great demand for high quality
and bulls at the front end of the sales. Average bulls and the
back end of sales have been the toughest part of sales thus far.
At the end of January, Randy Lemke’s sale started out the
season with the seats full again and with very strong demand.
The Bando 1961 and New Frontier bulls were standouts for
buyers here. Towards the beginning of February, DMD
Livestock had their 12 th Annual sale at the new sale facility with
full seats. Demand was sought for the CTR Good Night bulls as
a son set the sale pace for high seller to Swanson Cattle Co.
Randy Kleinschmidt was met with a snow storm before his
Annual Open House. Many commercial producers still found
there way out to buy and view the GKG Harley, BC Lookout
and Nebraska bulls. Kleinschmidt’s also offered an outstanding
set of bred heifers and young cows for March and April calving
this year. A few days later in Burwell, over 250 head were
By Clay Mead
offered through Cedar Top Ranch and Johnson Gelbvieh. The
CTR Vision, CTR Good Night, CTR Universe, and CTR Highlight
genetics were all accepted with demand from buyers abroad.
Buyers here were paying for the sought after docility, efficiency,
and performance. The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic featured
high quality again as it was won by an outstanding Buck’s
Carolina Rock’n son from M&P Gelbvieh and followed by the
reigning National Champion Balancer Bull from J.J. Boehler.
Krajewski Gelbvieh hosted there 9 th Annual sale on the weekend
exhibiting 3 pens of high performance Gelbvieh and
Balancer bulls. A Vision Grid Maker, New Frontier, and Right
Design sons were standouts here. Check out what the
Krajewski’s have in the private treaty pens as well to get in on
the outstanding genetic potential there. Many hidden gems
are to be had in that part of the country.
