Letter From The President
Bull sale season and Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic time are
here again already. As I look through the All American
Balancer Futurity catalog I am encouraged by the number of
out of state entries. Attracting more entries from out of state
breeders is very important to the future of the Bull Futurity.
Please stop by their stall and thank them for supporting our
show. There is still time to purchase your bull futurity membership.
Call Clay Mead for details.
I want to encourage all producers to take a close look at
what Nebraska Gelbvieh breeders have to offer in their bull
sales. Whether you are looking for a purebred or a balancer
bull of any percentage, you won’t find a better line up of
quality than what is offered here in Nebraska. I wish all
breeders good luck on your bull sales and calving seasons.
This will probably be my last letter as GAIN President. We
have accomplished many things the last 2 years. In order to
keep enthusiasm and fresh ideas flowing, this job really
needs to rotate more often. I encourage GAIN members to
rotate the offices every year in order to get more people
involved.
I hope to see everyone at the Classic.
GAIN News
Creighton Livestock Market - Gelbvieh Influence Sale
By Craig Livingston
GAIN Board Member
Creighton Livestock Market was the place to be January
15th to see several strings of high quality Gelbvieh and
Balancer calves. The number of calves in the sale was down
from previous years due to the intense pressure of the corn
market however the quality of the calves was excellent. The
bidding was very active and the good long strings of
Gelbvieh influenced calves sold very well. All the consigners
to the sale were very satisfied at the demand for the calves
and the prices that were bid. One consigner brought his
calves in from South Dakota for the sale. Most of the
Gelbvieh influenced calves were at or near the top of prices
bid for those weight cattle. Thanks to all those who brought
their cattle in and good luck to the buyers! We know you
bought the right kind and we hope to see everyone next
year.
Special thanks to Creighton Livestock Market for there
support to the Gelbvieh breed. Creighton Livestock Market
is a top ten Nebraska market for feeder calf sales. Regular
sales are every Tuesday. You can find more information at
Hall of Fame Inductions
North Carolina Man Inducted into Gelbvieh Hall of Fame
Bobby Myrick, owner of J-Bob Farms near Biscoe,
N.C., was inducted into the American Gelbvieh Association
(AGA) Hall of Fame during the 2008 AGA Convention in
Denver, Colo. The Hall of Fame honors individuals for their
long time efforts to promote the Gelbvieh breed and contributions
to the improvement of the breed.
Myrick and his wife, Julia, were instrumental in the
organization of the North Carolina Gelbvieh Association and
hosted many state field days at their farm over the years.
Bobby got his start with a strong red Gelbvieh cowherd but
soon realized that black and polled were in demand by his
buyers in the southeastern United States. He began evolving
his cowherd to make the best black polled Gelbvieh cattle
he could. He was never willing to sacrifice function and
performance in the chase for black and polled.
Myrick traveled thousands of miles to visit customers
and to develop a market for Gelbvieh, and later Balancer,
bulls in his region. In the early years, he was known to give a
commercial customer a bull, just to get them to try a
Gelbvieh bull. Bobby always knew that once the first calves
were on the ground, that customer would be so impressed
they would buy the bull. This kind of dedication helped
increase the use of Gelbvieh by southeastern commercial
cattle producers. Bobby developed a loyal base of customers
and helped many young seedstock producers get their start
in the Gelbvieh breed.
Myrick served on the AGA Board of Directors and
was never afraid to think outside of the box. Myrick dispersed
the J-Bob cowherd in 2005, however continues to promote
the breed every chance he gets. For his efforts the American
Gelbvieh Association recognized him with induction into the
AGA Hall of Fame.
Accepting Tony Hayek’s posthumous induction into the American
Gelbvieh Association Hall of Fame was the Tony Hayek family.
Iowa Man Posthumously Honored as
Gelbvieh Hall of Fame Inductee
Tony Hayek of Clutier, Iowa, was posthumously
inducted into the American Gelbvieh Association Hall of
Fame during the 2008 American Gelbvieh Association (AGA)
Convention in Denver, Colo. Hayek passed away due to a
tractor accident in June 2002. His family was on hand to
accept his award during the Convention in Denver.
Tony Hayek began running his family’s farm in 1976
as a senior in high school due to the untimely death of his
father. He raised row crops, but his real passion was the
cattle business. He became actively involved with the
Gelbvieh breed after trying several of the “new” continental
breeds via artificial insemination. Gelbvieh came to the top
quickly and Hayek began actively building his registered
herd. He and his wife, Barb, traveled extensively in the
Midwest to exhibit and promote this growing breed. Hayek
served on the American Gelbvieh Association Board of
Directors, as well as the Gelbvieh Breeders of Iowa Board of
Directors.
Tony and Barb’s children, Tina, Stan, Shellina and
Janelle, also became active in the junior programs and
showing cattle at regional and national junior shows. Tony
was a strong supporter of youth and believed that kids and
Gelbvieh cattle were an unbeatable team.
Today, the Hayek cattle tradition continues with
Hayek Gelbvieh, as well as Tina (Hayek) Cibula and her
husband, Matt, also running a Gelbvieh cattle operation.
Tony Hayek enjoyed Gelbvieh cattle and the people involved
in the Gelbvieh breed. His contributions were recognized
with his posthumous induction into the AGA Hall of Fame.
Collecting a Good DNA Sample
Occasionally we get notified from Igenity that a hair
sample submitted for DNA testing for parent verification just
doesn’t work. At that point we go back to the owner of the
animal and ask for a new sample. Many of them ask what
they can do to collect a good sample the first time. Below
are some hints.
1) It’s all in the root. The actual DNA sample does not come
from the hair shaft. The root or follicle is the portion of the
sample that is actually used to gather the DNA.
2) Animal age does play a role. While we can test samples
off very young calves the older calves, preferably weaning
age, typically yield a better sample. As the calves age, the
hair becomes coarser and most of the “fine” baby hair the
calves have in the tail switch has been replaced by coarser
hair. Coarser hair equals bigger follicle. Bigger follicles equal
a better DNA sample.
By Susan Willmon
7) Samples other than hair. Possibly the easiest way to send
sample into Igenity for Parent Verification is using the Igenity
ear tag. If you are sampling a larger number of calves (50
plus), and will be doing this on a yearly basis, investing in
these tags and the special tagger will pay off in the long run
in terms of less time spent collecting samples. You can find
information on the Igenity ear tags at www.igenity.com .
Semen is also a viable option. Once you pull the straw from
the tank, get it in the mail as quick as possible. The samples
tend to degrade over time and getting the straw to the lab
as soon as possible will ensure the best results.
Susan Willmon is the American Gelbvieh Association Director
of Breed Improvement. She can be reached at 303-465-2333
or email her at susanw@gelbvieh.org.
3) Coarser hair in the middle of the tail switch. Once you
have the animal restrained such that you can grab the tail,
select a section of hair from the middle of the switch. Hairs
here tend to be coarser than that found at the top or the
bottom of the switch.
4) Up, up and away. When you pull the hair it is okay to
use a set of pliers to grab the hair. Just be sure to remove
any excess hair between animals. Also when pulling the hair
a motion that is “Up and Away” seems to do a better job of
getting large intact follicles. So if you have the bottom of the
switch in your left hand and pliers in your right, pull the hair
out of the switch in an upwards motion, toward the tail
head to get the best follicles.
5) More is better. Don’t ever feel like you are sending too
big of a hair sample. With the potential of new tests in the
future, the possibility that DNA will be gathered multiple
times from a single sample exists.
Good visible folicles
Good sample characteristics:
• Coarse hair
• Follicles evident on just about every hair
• Good quality of hair
6) Archive one at the farm. While you are pulling the
sample take a second one as your own insurance policy.
Tape the hair shafts to an index card and store in an envelope
or use another collector. Note the animal’s AMGV
registration number on the sample and put it away in a cool
dry place. The biggest challenge we have in completing the
No folicle evident
parent verification process is locating samples on animals
Poor sample characteristics:
that have died or left the place.
• Fine hair
• Few visible follicles
IGENITY Profile Now More Powerful
DULUTH, Ga. — Merial announces the addition of new
genetic markers to the comprehensive IGENITY ® profile —
making it more robust and powerful than before. Markers
have been added to the analyses for back fat, yield grade,
ribeye area, hot carcass weight, marbling and quality grade.
“We are constantly working to add markers to the comprehensive
IGENITY profile that have the greatest impact on the
traits analyzed. By adding new markers, we have increased
the precision of the profile and the value to producers,” says
Dr. Stewart Bauck, Executive Director of Strategic Marketing,
IGENITY. “These additions give producers a more powerful
tool to make confident selection, management and marketing
decisions based on their cattle’s true carcass potential.”
He adds that the markers added to each analysis have been
extensively validated and have shown direct correlations to
the respective traits.
“These markers were licensed from several universities and
third-party research organizations,” Dr. Bauck says. “Through
an extensive, multistep validation process — conducted in
multiple populations, representing a diverse group of breeds
— each marker was found to be significant in predicting the
traits expressed.”
With the addition of these markers, Dr. Bauck says the
spread between a score of 1 from IGENITY and a score of 10
is now larger.
“With this update, the difference in a score from IGENITY
represents a greater spread, which means producers can
more accurately pinpoint an animal’s potential — early in
each stage of production,” Dr. Bauck says. “For example, the
difference in a score of 1 and a score of 10 for ribeye area
represents 2.12 inches. And the analysis for quality grade
represents almost a 54 percentage point difference in the
number of cattle that will reach the Choice grade when
comparing a group with a score of 1 to a group with a score
of 10.”
Current customers of IGENITY will have the first peek at the
results of this upgrade to the profile.
“All customers who have submitted samples in the past 60
days will receive, free of charge, updated scores for each
animal they profiled,” Dr. Bauck says. “We want to be sure
our current customers have first access to this information,
however, all cattle producers have access to, and can now
benefit from, the more powerful, comprehensive IGENITY
profile.”
Along with carcass composition traits, the IGENITY profile
includes a multiple-marker analysis for tenderness, and gives
producers options to perform a diagnostic test for identifying
cattle persistently infected with bovine viral diarrhea (BVD-PI),
identify parentage in multiple-sire settings, conduct a Commercial
Ranch Genetic Evaluation, and determine horned/
polled status. For more information on the comprehensive
IGENITY profile, visit www.IGENITY.com or call 1-877-
