Craddock sailed for Gombroon <strong>with</strong> instructions dated 5<br />

March 1662:<br />

"Commission and instructions given us by <strong>the</strong> President and<br />

Council of <strong>India</strong>, Persia, etc. unto our loving Friend, Mr.<br />

<strong>Richard</strong> Craddock proceeding as Agent in <strong>the</strong> negotiating of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Hon. Comp. affaires in Persia and are to be observed by<br />

him <strong>the</strong>re".<br />

Dated on Swally Marine <strong>the</strong> 5th day of March Anno Domini<br />

1662.<br />

We being sufficiently experienced in your abilities in <strong>the</strong><br />

dispatch of our Masters' affairs in those employments you<br />

have been put upon, have now concluded and appointed you<br />

Agent in Persia, death having deprived us of those friends<br />

we sent thi<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> last year. We also order Mr. George<br />

Cranmer your Second and to keep <strong>the</strong> Accounts, yourself<br />

having constant inspection into <strong>the</strong>m. Thus <strong>the</strong>re may be no<br />

mistake or delays as <strong>the</strong> former years have produced nothing<br />

but promises, no performances. So that we are not ignorant<br />

of those passages most necessary to be known, which<br />

irregular course we desire for <strong>the</strong> future you will prevent<br />

to be practised that we have hinted first, because of so<br />

much concernments. It being thirteen years almost since we<br />

received any Account, though Mr. Flower who is at this time<br />

(we know nothing to <strong>the</strong> contrary) <strong>the</strong>re resident; and hath<br />

but little of our Masters' business to hinder <strong>the</strong><br />

accomplishing of <strong>the</strong> rehearsed (above enumerated facts)<br />

which is so material [important]. And though Mr. Flower may<br />

expect <strong>the</strong> quality of Second yet for this main reason, and<br />

some o<strong>the</strong>r, we confer it on Mr. George Cranmer; he [Mr.<br />

Flower] to succeed as Third, or leave Persia for Surat.
