Notes for Thomas Garrard:
Inherited Kingwood from his father in 1702.
From a letter to Frank C. Garrard from his father Francis Thomas Garrard dated March 1904:
My dear Frank,
Reverting to the 'Lambourn Church' I sent you, I notice that the Pedigree therein mentioned only goes as far,
as our branch is concerned, to Barbara Willoughby, married to Thomas Garrard of Upper Lambourn who had
a son Nicholas and 15 other children. I have therefore drawn out and enclose a memo carrying on our branch
to the present time. My Great Great Grandfather with his 15 brothers and sisters must have swallowed up
whatever fortune their father had to leave, resulting in my Great Grandfather migrating to Reading. Our
branch through Barbara Willoughby are descended from Edward III, and now you will have a fairly correct
idea of your forebears.
'Lambourn Church' refers to "History of Lambourn Church" by John Footman, published in 1894. F T
Garrard's additions to the pedigree have also been lost. I also have an old illustration of the Garrard coat of
arms including a sketch of Lambourn Parsonage. There are hand written notes on the back explaining the
heraldry, but I can't identify the writing.
Notes for Thomas Garrard:
From "History of Lambourn Church" by John Footman (1894):
He held the great tithes of the parish on lease from the Dean of St. Paul's, and lived in the parsonage - indeed,
it is not unlikely that the present house was erected by, or for, him. He married Cicely, daughter of William
Wilmot, of Wantage, and sister of Sir George Wilmot. He was a staunch Royalist, and in 1649 got himself
into trouble, together with Thomas, his eldest son. The 'Articles of Delinquency against Thomas Gerard,
Senior, of Chipping Lamborn,' tell us that 'he persauded his tenantsto take arms for the King, promising to put
a son into the place of any who fell, and allowed his tenants to pay contributions for the King's army, but none
for the Parliament. He got a council order from Oxford about the mode of levying assessments, and had those
who refused to pay plundered by the King's horse.'
Notes for Robert Lowther:
From "The Lowther Family" by Hugh Owen:
Robert became a successful merchant in London, trading in all manner of goods to Hamburg and elsewhere.
One of his ships was the "Truelove" but the name does not seem to have borne much resemblance to Robert's
nature which appears to have been rather quarrelsome. This is apparent in the letters from his nephew
Christopher Lowther, his trading partner in Dublin. At one stage Christopher felt obliged to hope for "kinder
terms betwixt my father and you".
In 1628 Robert was married in the church of St Benet Fink in London to Margaret Cutler of Stainborough
near Silkstone, Yorkshire. She died without issue and in 1633 he was married at Malmesbury, Wiltshire, to
Elizabeth, daughter of William Holcroft. They lived in Lothbury in the City of London and most of their 14
children were baptised at St Margaret's in Lothbury. A member of the Drapers' Company, Robert served as an
Alderman of London from 1650 to 1651 and was elected Master of the Drapers' Company in 1653. During
the Civil War his sympathies lay with the Royalists and he objected strongly to the high taxes which the
Committee for the Advancement of money forced him to pay for the upkeep of the Parliamentary army. His
"abusive words concerning this Committee" were reported to the House of Lords but the matter appears to
have been dropped.
In September 1649, his profits as a merchant and in conjunction with his nephew Sir John Lowther of
Lowther, he bought the estate of Marske with its fine Jacobean house and 6,000 acres of on the north
Yorkshire coast. "Uncle Rob et me purchased Marske in trust for our children which cost entirely £13,000",
wrote Sir John in his account book. Three years later Sir John agreed to sell his share in Marske to "my uncle
Rob as most convenient for him that wanted a Seat, and I had but too many and it too great a housr not to be
used; and I held it too cold a Seat for me, growing now more infirm than formerly, being now in my 47th year
of age". Uncle Rob was 56 but he wanted the house for his children to set them up as landed gentry, and
probably never lived there himself. The wily Sir John made £500 profit out of his Uncle Rob out of the deal.
Robert's descendants owned Marske until 1756.
Robert died early in 1655 and, in accordance with the directions of his will, was "buried at night without
pomp" at St Margaret's, Lothbury, on 9 January.
Robert was survived by eight of his 14 children, ranging in age from one to twenty-one. A year later, in April
1656, his widow Elizabeth married Dr Daniel Whistler, a celebrated London physician with a rich practice of
£1000 a year. Whistler was an active member of the Royal College of Physicians and was its President at the
time of his death in 1684. John Evelyn liked his conversation and Samuel Pepys found him "good company
and a very ingenious man".
Notes for Thomas Garrard:
From the guide to Lambourn Church (1999):
On the north wall of the sanctuary is a fine carved stone memorial to Thomas Garrard, who died in 1583, and
Agnes his wife, who died in 1556. With their kneeling figures are those of their son and daughter. This is one
of the several monuments to members of the Garrard family in this church that form an important and
continuous series extending from 1530 to 1778. The Garrard arms with helm, crest and mantling are clearly
visible and beneath is the inscription: " Three children more at one birth Agnes had, We are all baptised, with
hir in one grave laid." The memorial was restored in 1980 inmemory of Mark Swinfen Morgan by his
children.
Prior to the restoration of 1861 there were memorials to other Garrards set in the chancel floor, among them
the blue stone slab with full length brasses, arms and inscription of Thomas Garrard, d. 1619 and his wife
Anne, d. 1610 that is now fixed on the south wall of the sanctuary.
18 February 17, 2004
Full inscription of wall memorial also includes:
"Thomas Garrard toke to wife Agnes Blagrove by whome he had issue, William and Elizabeth. Agnes, ye
first wife of Thomas Garrard departid ys life ye 28th July 1556. Thomas Garrard hir husband departed ye
24th December 1583. William Garrard their son most faythfully in ye memory of them both caused ys
monument to be erectid, wch William departid ys life ye 16th July 1608."
According to John Footman (History of Lambourn Church, 1894) the head on the figure on the left was
replaced, "the original having been wantonly destroyed by one of the workmen employed in the restoration of
the chancel." This probably happened during the restoration of 1861.
Notes for Roger Garrard:
From "History of Lambourn Church" by John Footman (1894):
At the end of a marble monument raised upon four pillars on the south side of the chancel, was, in
Ashmole's time, this inscription:
"Here lyeth Roger Garrard, Gent., & Elizabeth his wife, whose bodies rest in the Earth, their Mother,
and whose souls do live with God, their Father, which said Roger being of the age of 66 years, dyed
1631.
Mors mihi lucrum. Hodie mihi cras tibi.
I am but Earth, and yet Iam Gods Creature
My sins are great and yeat Gods mercy's greater
For I believe in Christ his sonne and by him I hoope to be saved. Elizabeth Garrarde.
Uni aetate fuit, nulli pietate secunda
Nam talis erat qualis erat talem
Suus vir numquam vidit Roger Garrard.
The marble monument with its four pillars is unhappily gone. At the restoration in 1849 it was in a
very ruinous condition, and an appeal was made to the representatives of the Garrard family to repair
it. On their refusing to do so, it was demolished and carted away, and the brass plate with the
inscription fixed in the East wall of St. Mary's Chapel."
