Unfortunately, Craddock was not to keep his assistant<br />
Cranmer for long as a letter arrived on board The Vine<br />
addressed to Craddock (EFI 61-64, p.80) explaining <strong>the</strong><br />
reasons why it was necessary for Craddock to send Cranmer<br />
to Basra, one of which was that:<br />
“The Cuttaries (local merchants) have promised large<br />
quantities of freight moneyes to return it [i.e <strong>the</strong> freight<br />
cargo] upon her [The Vine], <strong>the</strong>refore think fit he<br />
[Cranmer] should proceed to assist in making <strong>the</strong> freight<br />
and ladding of <strong>the</strong> ship”.<br />
A commission of appointment by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Company</strong> of Captain<br />
Edward Mason to <strong>the</strong> ship Royal Welcome dated 27 March 1662<br />
contains a brief reference to Gombroon at <strong>the</strong> time of<br />
Cradock’s residence <strong>the</strong>re as follows:<br />
The ship now being full laden, we order you (Capt. Mason) …<br />
to weigh anchor and set sail for speedy attaining of <strong>the</strong><br />
Port of Gombroon.<br />
Where when arrived<br />
send on shore our<br />
Advices here<strong>with</strong><br />
delivered you unto<br />
<strong>the</strong> Agent [Cradock],<br />
desiring our sudden<br />
sending of boats, to<br />
take out what<br />
freight goods are<br />
laden on board her,<br />
being wholly on<br />

this to be<br />
dispatched so soon<br />
