HFS, Helping to Make
Real Miracles Happen!
on the inside...
A Change is Coming To
Local Partnership Saves
You Money!
We recently held one of our annual fundraisers aimed
at helping our local community, the Kapi’olani Childrens
Miracle Network. Each HFS branch collected
donations and beautifully displayed the thousands of
balloons in our lobbies. Children’s Miracle Network—
the alliance of premier hospitals for children—is a
non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving
the lives of children by raising funds for children’s
hospitals across North America. Each year the
170 Children’s Miracle Network hospitals provide the
finest medical care, life-saving research and preventative
education helping over 17 million children overcome
diseases and injuries of every kind. Best of all,
100% of every dollar raised by HFS stays in Hawai’i!
Kapi’olani Medical Center (the only childrens hospital
in the state) provides specialized pediatric care to all
children regardless of race, religion, or ability to pay.
This year we raised an amazing $15,000. Special
recognititon goes out to the Hilo branch for raising
a total of $7,550 and to our top three individual
collectors; Lorna Krahner, Tammy Martines, and
Kristi Lei Tagalicud (shown on right). This incredible
fundraiser will help the many deserving Keiki in
our community and HFS is proud to bring the families
and community together in raising these funds.
We would like to thank our many members who donated
to make this our most successful year ever.
A Change is Coming to
Your Checking Account
New legislation that will take effect this
summer requires us to ask members to
opt-in for Courtesy Pay for one-time debit
card transactions. If you do not opt-in to
this service, beginning August 15, 2010,
HFS will no longer cover transactions that
may bring your account negative. Instead
these transactions will be declined and you
may face a very embarrassing and inconvenient
situation. You may opt-in to Courtesy
Pay for one-time debit card transactons in
any of the following ways:
1. Completing a Courtesy Pay Service
Request Form and returning it to HFS
in person or by mail, addressed to:
HFS Federal Credit Union
632 Kinoole Street
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Courtesy Pay Service Request Forms
can be found at any branch, online, or
may have been previously mailed to
you.
2. By calling (808) 930-1400 or toll
free at (800) 216-2666.
What is Overdraft Protection &
Courtesy Pay
An overdraft occurs when you make a
purchase or perform a transaction but don’t
have enough money in your account to pay
for it.
SAY YES
Response Needed!
...to keep your debit card
overdraft privilege
Generally, the credit union can cover your overdrafts
in one of two different ways:
• Overdraft protection plans. These are
generally the least expensive way to
cover your overdrafts. The credit union
may offer a line of credit or a link to your
savings account to cover transactions
when you overdraw your account.
• Courtesy Pay. After all other forms of
overdraft protection plans are exhausted,
the credit union will cover your transaction
for a flat fee of $20.00 each time you
overdraw your account.
At HFS, Courtesy Pay is divided into two
types:
• Courtesy Pay for checks or automatic bill
payments
• Courtesy Pay for everyday debit card
transactions
HFS always attempts to pay for check or automatic
bill payments. However, to have this added
protection for everyday debit card transactions
you must opt-in (agree) to the additional coverage.
Why opt-in
Courtesy Pay for everyday debit card transactions
is an added level of protection that many
members have for their checking account. This
“just in case” service is often preferred by
members to being declined at the cash register.
If you do not opt-in, beginning August 15, 2010,
Courtesy Pay won’t apply to your everyday debit
card transactions. These transactions typically will
be declined when you don’t have enough money
in your account, and you will not be charged
overdraft fees.
Does having Courtesy Pay guarantee
all my transactions will be paid
No, Courtesy Pay is designed for emergency use
only. It’s not designed to continually overdraft
an account, and therefore has no predetermined
limit to which a member can draw.
If I don’t like Courtesy Pay, can I discontinue
it
Yes, if you decide the service is not worthwhile,
you or any joint owner can discontinue it at any
time by contacting the credit union. In addition,
the credit union will waive, at its discretion, any
reasonable fees incurred by you.
A Few Financial Tips
for 2010
- Make sure to check your credit
report at least once a year. Visit
www.annualcreditreport.com
to do so. This is the only official
site that entitles you to check
your credit report and it is truly
free. Keeping track of your credit
report and the charges and
accounts listed, may help you
to better manage your finances
and combat identity theft. If you
notice charges or accounts on
your credit report that are not
yours, you must report it immediately
to the credit bureaus
and have a fraud alert placed on
your account.
-As the economy forces many
of us to make changes to our
way of living and to focus more
on needs than wants, remember
your credit union is here to
help. If you find yourself in a
diffcult situation unable to make
your full car payment, or falling
farther and farther behind on
your credit cards, please visit
HFS and see what we can do for
you. We have various options
including consolidation loans,
loan modifications to minimize
payments, or credit counseling.
Remember, staying in contact
with us will help us to find ways
to assist you.
-Try to minimize the amount of
credit cards you hold and utilize.
It is reccomended to have no
more than three cards at any
time. By minimizing the amount
of cards you carry you will enable
yourself to better manage
those you do have. Also avoid
carrying large balances on your
high APR cards. If possible utilize
low interest Credit Cards like an
HFS VISA.
