Big Island High School Seniors<br />

<strong>HFS</strong> <strong>Federal</strong> <strong>Credit</strong> <strong>Union</strong> is pleased to announce our 2013 scholarship recipients.<br />

These 7 Big Island high school seniors were selected to each receive a $2,500<br />

scholarship to be used towards furthering their education in the upcoming academic<br />

year. Recipients were carefully chosen for their academic excellence, achievements,<br />

goals, financial need and community involvement. Congratulations to this year’s<br />

recipients and to all graduating seniors.<br />

On Sunday April 14, 2013 <strong>HFS</strong> staff joined over 100 Big Island community teams to paddle in the<br />

30 th annual Kamehameha Canoe Club Business Regatta. <strong>HFS</strong> was excited to participate in this<br />

great team building event and entered both a novice and intermediate team with 11 staff<br />

paddling throughout the exciting day. Congratulations to our intermediate team who paddled<br />

their way to the finals and displayed a terrific effort for our first time competing in this event.<br />

16 th Annual Heart Walk<br />

On Saturday, March 2, 2013, <strong>HFS</strong> staff joined the American<br />

Heart Association and the Hilo community in celebration of the<br />

16 th Annual Heart Walk. Held at Liliuokalani Gardens this event<br />

brings awareness and raises funds to help educate and fund<br />

research on heart disease and strokes. As a proud supporter,<br />

<strong>HFS</strong> staff once again assisted with early morning registration<br />

and later enjoyed the Health Fair and other activities put on by<br />

volunteers, community members, and survivors. A big mahalo<br />

to all <strong>HFS</strong> staff volunteers and donors for your support.<br />

<strong>HFS</strong> Staff Participate in Junior<br />

Achievement at Waiakea<br />

Elementary School<br />

<strong>HFS</strong> was excited to be involved with the Waiakea Elementary<br />

Junior Achievement program once again in the 2012-2013<br />

school year. Winnie Makaea and Alexander Kay-Wong<br />

taught students from Mrs. Saiki and Mrs. Ligouri’s kindergarten<br />

classes about earning and saving money, trading, and<br />

working together. We would like to thank Waiakea Elementary<br />

School and Junior Achievement for allowing us to continue<br />

participating in this valuable program and teaching youth the<br />

importance of saving their money.<br />

Easter Seals Hawaii Boogie Bowl<br />

In support of Easter Seals Hawaii, <strong>HFS</strong> entered three teams in the<br />

2013 Boogie Bowl held on April 27, 2013. Staff and their families<br />

joined other businesses at Hilo Lanes for a night of bowling, live<br />

70’s music, contests, and many other fun activities. Together,<br />

our community raised close to $12,000 during this fun event.<br />

Congratulations to our <strong>HFS</strong> FCU Team 1 (Gerald Seikaku, Mike<br />

Matsuo, Sheldon Midallia, Mike Wakida, and Darryl Yagi) for<br />

being awarded first place for top overall team score and top<br />

individual score. Great Job!

2013 Annual Meeting Features Hawaii Community<br />

College Culinary Arts Program<br />

On April 7, 2013 <strong>HFS</strong> members joined credit union staff at the Sangha Hall for a fun filled family<br />

event featuring the culinary creations of the Hawaii Community College Culinary Arts Program.<br />

Along with the delicious food, members also enjoyed entertainment by Lito Arkangel and<br />

various children’s activities including balloon animals, jumping castles, and temporary tattoos.<br />

Following the event <strong>HFS</strong> <strong>Federal</strong> <strong>Credit</strong> <strong>Union</strong> was pleased to present the Hawaii Community<br />

College Culinary Arts Program with a donation for $3,856.37. Upon accepting the donation,<br />

Allan Okuda (Program Chair) expressed his gratitude and stated the donation would be used<br />

to purchase new cooking equipment for current and future culinary students. <strong>HFS</strong> was honored<br />

to support Hawaii Community College and the terrific work they do for our community.<br />
