Second Quarter 2010
On Saturday February 20, 2010 over 1,500 members of
the community gathered at Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo to
support the American Heart Association and their 13 th
Annual Heart Walk. HFS and our dedicated staff were glad to
assist with registration, as well as meeting our donation goal
of $4,000. We would like to thank all volunteers and those
who donated and participated to make this event a success.
Special thanks goes out to Lola Wakida our team captain for
her dedication to this cause. We look forward to supporting
our community in the coming year as our way of saying thank
you for using your credit union.
FEDERAL CREDIT UNION
Where Caring Counts
HFS
HFS IN OUR COMMUNITY
Earlier this year your Credit Union partnered with the University of Hawaii
at Hilo Marketing department, Waiakea High School and Kamehameha
High School to establish and carry out a research project which looked at the
differentiation of our organization from our competitors. Our students and
future leaders worked diligently on a semester long project aimed at developing
ways for our organization to be more sustainable and community oriented.
The project ended with a competition between the many teams, judged by
over 20 members of the business community including various managers of
HFS FCU. The winning team (shown below) had many great ideas, a professional
presentation, and materials and research that matched. Our prize to
the winning team was a $150 donation to a charity of their choice. They
chose the Michael J. Fox Foundation, a charity which has donated more than
$170 million to Parkinsons research.
We are glad to have participated in this
project and look forward to future
collaboration between our credit union
and the local schools in hopes to better
educate and help our community reach
financial success.
Changes to Your Credit Card Agreement!
In February 2010, the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act
took effect intending to make it easier to manage your credit card account. To comply with
the new Regulation, we have made the following changes to your Credit Card Agreement.
SUMMARY OF CHANGES
• Over-the-Credit-Limit Fee. We will no longer charge a fee for going over your credit
limit. However, keep in mind that we may decline any transaction that would cause you
to exceed your credit limit. To avoid this inconvenience when using your credit card, it is
more important than ever to know how close you are to your limit. You can easily find out
your available credit any time by calling the number on the back of your card
(1-800-808-7230) or by visiting www.hfsfcu.org. On the HFS home page click on Online
Banking then connect to eZCardInfo. eZCardInfo’s online banking can be used to set up
automatic alerts that let you know when you are approaching your limit.
• Payment Due Dates. For your convenience, your payment date will now fall on the same
date of each month and will be at least 25 days from the closing date printed on your
statement.

ATTENTION HOMEBUYERS
Now is a great time to buy! Let us tell you why.
The First-time homebuyer tax credit of $8,000 has been extended until April 30, 2010. However,
buyers who enter into a binding sales contract by April 30, 2010 and close by June 30, 2010 will
also qualify. The tax credit has also been expanded to include a $6,500 tax credit for those who
have lived in their current residence for at least five of the last eight years. This means that both
first-time buyers and current homeowners are now eligible for the tax credit.
Another reason to buy is that interest rates remain at an all-time low and currently there is a vast
selection of homes on the market. What better time to find that home of your dreams, seal the deal,
and receive a large tax credit that may never be offered again.
HFS offers competitive first and second mortgages
which have the following benefits:
-Competitive interest rates
-Flexible qualification guidelines
-One-on-one service and assistance
-No prepayment penalty
-In-house mortgage and loan servicing
For more information or to apply for a mortgage loan today visit any
one of our six branches or call us at (808) 930-1400 or toll free at
(800) 216-2666. Let us help you experience home ownership!
Protecting Your Identity
Identity thieves steal your personal information to commit fraud. They
can damage your credit status and cost you time and money restoring
your good name. To reduce your risk of becoming a victim, follow the
tips below:
Tips for Preventing Identity Loss
• Don’t carry your Social Security
card in your wallet or write it on
your checks. Only give out your
SSN when absolutely necessary.
• Protect your PIN. Never write a
PIN on a credit/debit card or on a
slip of paper kept in your wallet.
• Watch out for “shoulder surfers.”
Use your free hand to shield the keypad when using pay phones and ATMs.
• Collect mail promptly. Ask the post office to put your mail on hold when you
are away from home for more than a day or two.
• Pay attention to your billing cycles. If bills or financial statements are late,
contact the sender.
• Keep your receipts. Ask for carbons and incorrect charge slips as well. Promptly
compare receipts with account statements. Watch for unauthorized transactions.
• Tear up or shred unwanted receipts, credit offers, account statements, expired
cards, etc., to prevent dumpster divers getting your personal information.
• Store personal information in a safe place at home and at work. Don’t leave it lying
around.
• Don’t respond to unsolicited requests for personal information in the mail, over the
phone or online.
• Install firewalls and virus-detection software on your home computer.
Financial Calculators
As an additional service to our members, HFS has added financial calculators on our
website for you to use. We have a wide variety of calculators including those used
to calculate mortgage payments, savings, loan payments, retirement funds, and
more. Visit www.hfsfcu.org to start computing today. They will not only help you in
your decision making, but can be a great financial
planning tool. Best of all they are completely free
and you will have access to them 24 hours a day,
seven days a week.
If you have any questions please feel free to call
930-1400.
Driveway Improvements
Please pardon the inconvenience as we continue our renovations of the Hilo office with
driveway improvements. We are widening the Ululani street entrance to make it both safer
and easier to use. Office hours remain the same, and, weather permitting, the improvements
should be completed quickly. We are committed to providing you with the highest
level of member satisfaction, and thank you for your patience during this renovation.
