who may like to head to one of the many sailing schools, learn to sail, even become qualified and enjoy our reliable weather, waters and winds to boot. Ondeck Antigua offers a multitude of options to get out on the water from certificated courses to crewing positions at regattas. The National Sailing Academy caters to one and all. Really, from local school children to visitor, the National Sailing Academy offers tasters for newcomers, advanced RYA certificate courses, and operate a sail-ability program for less abled sailors on specially modified boats! Many hotels too have fairly advanced sailing capabilities. A couple of yacht clubs welcome visitors too. They include the Antigua Yacht Club in Falmouth/English Harbour and the Jolly Harbour Yacht Club. Both host regattas and hold regular yacht races during the season and have active dingy fleets that cater to anyone from about 8 years old and up. When it comes to international sailing regattas, Antigua once again leads the way, well known for three of the worlds finest regattas, Antigua Sailing Week is the largest and oldest of the three. Antigua Sailing Week is held at the end of April each year; it boasts a full week of sailing and socialising that attracts sailors from around the globe to compete in categories from beginner to professional. The younger and more sedate, Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, has a very congenial atmosphere that is not unlike a live performance by a jazz quintet. Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta attracts a diverse cross section of followers, all with one thing in common - a passion for classic yachts that include large/small, original/retro and do it yourself /money no object classic yachts! It really is a passion, which is evident in the love and attention given to these stunning yachts and sailing work boats. Places are often available to crew during one of the four or five hour races that take place over four days at the end of April each year, or take in the fleet as they parade for shore based spectators in English Harbour. One of the liveliest classes in Classic Yacht Regatta is reserved for locally built work boats. Colourful West Indian sloops and schooners, originally built to fish or carry cargo, which are increasingly being built as yachts, as they are being (re)discovered to be very functional for these waters and loads of fun to sail. This year we are looking forward to the premiere of a film by local filmmaker Alexis And rews. Vanishing Sail by Indian Creek Films will have an official screening at the Classic Regatta. Four years in the making, the docu men tary tells the story of trading by sail in the West Indies, and follows a family of the last boat builders in Carriacou as they create a 42’ traditional wooden sailboat on the beach and struggle to launch in time to compete in the international Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta. By far the youngest and most energetic of the three regattas is the Caribbean RORC 600. Nothing short of a gruelling 600 mile ocean race that takes days to complete. Beginning in Antigua, the course has some of the world’s most competitive ocean racing yachts and their crews tested to the max as they navigate around several neighbouring islands before returning to Antigua. This popular race can be tracked online through the website, which enables a close sense of connection with the boats whilst they are on the course. When it comes to sailing, Antigua has so many options you’re bound to find something to engage you, whether you’re visiting Antigua for a well earned relaxing break or if sailing is your life’s passion. Dining Dining out in Antigua offers a melting pot of options. From mouth watering West Indian dishes, international and exotic cuisines to impeccably fresh seafood – there’s something to please every palate. Most places accept credit cards, however, it is wise to check beforehand. Dinner reservations are recommended, especially in season. The following is a selected list of some of the island’s best restaurants. ST. JOHN’S AREA BIG BANANA Historic Redcliffe Quay, Tel: 480 6985/6967 This casual dining restaurant is a popular Antiguan institution and has been serving some of the best pizzas for more than 30 years. With its wide menu selection, affordable prices and indoor/outdoor dining, Big Banana is sure to satisfy everyone in your party. CAFÉ BELLA Village Walk, Tel: 462 3552 Enjoy freshly brewed cappuccino, latte and espresso as well as a wide variety of herbal and regular teas. Try our ‘all day’ breakfast. Delicious pastries baked in house, with daily specials including soup, salads and sandwiches – all fresh, fresh, fresh! There are also smoothies, iced coffee and cold drinks. Open 8.00am-4.30pm Mon- Fri and Sat 8.30am-4.00pm. CAFÉ NAPOLEON Historic Redcliffe Quay, Tel: 562 1820 This lovely little restaurant provides exciting cuisine for breakfast and lunch. Exotic salads, fresh seafood, an Antiguan Plate of the Day and homemade desserts are just a few of the offerings. Relax and enjoy a cappuccino, espresso or our famous Napoleon cocktail on our trendy outdoor patio. C&C WINE HOUSE Redcliffe Quay 460 7025 If the South African wines are the reason you visited, then the food is definitely a reason to return! Try our pastas, burgers, ‘Coconut Scrimps,’ Cutie’s Chicken wings and much more ... open 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., closed on Sunday and Monday night. HARBOUR VIEW BAR AND CAFE Tel: 462-2972 From its elevated vantage point on the waterfront of St. John’s, this delightful bar and café offers cool sea breezes while sampling a selection of fresh exotic salads and a wide range of sandwiches and paninis. A must are the homemade rum cake, Exotic Antiguan banana split and unique Antiguan rum drinks. Open for breakfast and lunch. HEAVENLY JAVA 2GO Historic Redcliffe Quay, Tel: 562-7184 Heavenly Java 2Go is the home of Java Roast 2Go, Antigua’s newest coffee, roasted and blended locally. Relax and enjoy a cup of freshly-brewed cappuccino, espresso or latte, made from one of our signature blends, or pick up a bag of ground or whole beans at supermarkets and specialty stores.
