Pottery shards <strong>in</strong> our museum<br />

date back to the<br />

Amer<strong>in</strong>dians, so it is hardly<br />

surpris<strong>in</strong>g that the craft of<br />

pottery mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Antigua</strong><br />

still flourishes. Different<br />

local clays from various parts<br />

of the island are lov<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

hand formed and open pitfired<br />

by several potters.<br />

CEDARS POTTERY, Tel: 460 5293,<br />

is the creative venture of <strong>Antigua</strong>n<br />

born Michael Hunt and his wife Imogen<br />

Margrie. Commercially they are<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g a range of wall light<br />

sconces and an evolv<strong>in</strong>g group of<br />

eclectic gift items, whilst also creat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a grow<strong>in</strong>g portfolio of substantial<br />

sculptural commissions <strong>in</strong> such materials<br />

as wood and stone.<br />

ex-Chelsea potter has her studio <strong>in</strong><br />

the garden at Hodges Bay on the<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> road, where she lives. The<br />

theme of her pottery and pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

features fruit, flowers and tropical<br />

trees <strong>in</strong> all their vibrant colours.<br />

expression of her k<strong>in</strong>ship with<br />

the sea. She playfully refers to her<br />

pieces as ‘mermaid ware’. Made with<br />

locally dug clay, her pottery is not<br />

only functional and beautiful, it is<br />

an extension of herself, a piece of<br />

her <strong>Antigua</strong>n soul. A visit to Rhythm<br />

of Blue Art Gallery, located <strong>in</strong> English<br />

Harbour (open Dec-May) or<br />

her studio (May-Nov) also <strong>in</strong> English<br />

Harbour, is an experience not<br />

to be missed!<br />

SEA VIEW FARM VILLAGE,<br />

Tel: 463 1888, is rich with a history of<br />

traditional pottery mak<strong>in</strong>g. Previous<br />

generations, learned the art<br />

from their mothers without the aid<br />

of a potter’s wheel. Make this stop<br />

a must particularly for natural clay<br />

cook<strong>in</strong>g vessels, coal pots, plant<br />

holders and pots. A limited number<br />

of these items are sometimes available<br />

at St. John’s market.
