GEOGRAPHY INTERNS: CLASS OF 2009 Mark Lofrano (left) and Andrew Nordstrom were our fourth and fifth interns to serve as environmental educators at Wild Bear Center for Nature Discovery, in Nederland, Colorado. Wild Bear, having reached the five‐intern plateau, received a certificate of appreciation in 2009 from the Department for longstanding cooperation with our internship program. The City of Rock Island, Illinois, takes its facilities seriously. Intern Alex Hutchins (left) helped supervisor Randy Tweet and the rest of Public Works keep track of signs and such, throughout the summer of 2009, with GPS and GIS technology. 6
Libby Townley (center) was Geography’s third summer intern at the Greater Peoria Sanitary District. District Engineer Tim Leach (right) has played an advisory role in the experiences of all three interns. Directly supervising Libby’s GIS work was Shubhada Savant (left). Matt Kline (left) found an excellent internship only five minutes by vehicle from his parental home, a few miles south of Joliet, at the Forest Preserve District of Will County. Helping oversee Matt’s GIS and GPS duties was Sam Hildebrand. The National Atmospheric Deposition Program, directed by David Gay (right), gathers information on precipitation chemistry and operates out of the facilities of the Illinois State Water Survey, in Champaign. Intern Nate Chott (left) spent his time there manipulating huge data sets in a GIS environment. 7
