MORGAN PRAIRIE August, when photographer/author Ellen Dietz toured the prairie restoration site of Bill Morgan in 2009, is a good time to see some showy flowering plants. Prairie grasses tend to flower in the fall, grasses like Indian grass and little bluestem. The yellow flowers in all three images are partridge pea, which is widespread and fairly common across Illinois. An annual, partridge pea does well in disturbed areas— such as a restored prairie. Weeds, like foxtail millet (drooping heads) and smartweed (pink flower), populate the nascent prairie, a common occurrence when restoration involves cultivation. See pages 1013 for Ellen’s article.

Malone Cover: EarthScope features networks of sophisticated and carefully positioned seismic sensing devices that report automatically and frequently to data collection points via satellite telemetry. Illinois is in the path of an invasion by the brown dots, which represent positions, on a 75 kilometer grid, of the USArray. Some of the rolling array’s traveling seismometers will reside in Illinois for two years, beginning in 2011. The dot in Illinois underneath the name of the state is the location of HDIL, the broad band seismometer near Hopedale that Skip Nelson championed and now monitors. It is part of a 350 kilometer grid and will remain after the traveling array finally reaches the Atlantic and moves north to Alaska.
