Summer is well and truly here and as usual there’s a bunch of things you can do to enjoy what the season has to offer! Check out the events<br />

and festivals and see if you can make any of them this August for some good summer fun!<br />

Kusamakura Haiku Contest <br />

Haiku are short, image-based poems about the things that make people<br />

feel connected to nature. English haiku do not adhere to the strict<br />

syllable count found in Japanese haiku, and typical English haiku have<br />

three lines of up to 17 syllables. Kumamoto's annual international haiku<br />

competition is open to all non-native Japanese speakers and participation<br />

is free. Entries can be submitted by post or through the competition<br />

website by September 10 (postmarked on this day is OK). You can<br />

submit up to 2 pieces of Haiku, but they must be unpublished works.<br />

The grand prize is 50,000 Yen with second (8 winners) and third place<br />

(20 winners) prizes also awarded. Works may be submitted by mail or<br />

through the homepage.<br />

“Exploring the Deep Sea” <br />

Can you imagine what’s in the deep sea What lives there<br />

How do we even come to learn about an environment which exists at<br />

such unreachable depths Come and see what we've discovered about<br />

the deep sea as we share with you real abyssal specimens and exhibits<br />

which shed light on the wonderful facts of the deep sea.<br />

When: Saturday, July 20 to Sunday, September 1<br />

Where: <strong>Nagoya</strong> City Science Museum<br />

Cost: Adults 1,000 Yen, Senior HS and University students 700 Yen,<br />

Elementary and Junior HS students 500 Yen.<br />

Star Gazing at the Science Museum<br />

<br />

Observe the night sky using the large rooftop telescope after a lecture<br />

presentation at the Planetarium at this regularly held star gazing event.<br />

A perfect educational opportunity for both students and adults who<br />

have an interest in astronomy.<br />

When: Saturday, September 14 (18:15 - 20:30)<br />

Where: Rooftop observatory, <strong>Nagoya</strong> City Science Museum <br />

Participation: Adults 700 Yen, school-age children 300 Yen. Numbers<br />

are limited to 250 participants. To apply, send a reply-paid post card to <br />

<strong>Nagoya</strong> City Science Museum and Planetarium – Closure<br />

and Maintenance Notice <br />

The museum is usually closed every Monday and 3rd Friday, however<br />

there are some changes for the months of August and September.<br />

The museum will be open on Monday, August 12 and Friday, August<br />

16. The museum will be closed on Tuesday, September 3 and on<br />

Wednesday, September 4. The planetarium will be closed for equipment<br />

inspection on Thursday, September 5 and Friday, September 6.<br />

The exhibition room will remain accessible.<br />

Axtos 6 hr Relay Marathon 2013 at <strong>Nagoya</strong> Dome<br />

<br />

At this marathon event, there are two types of entry available to participants. Choose between<br />

a 6 hour relay or a 42.195km relay marathon. Groups of 3 to 10 people are accepted and men<br />

only, women only or mixed groups are allowed entry. If either of these two marathons are too<br />

long for your liking, there’s also a shorter 2km family run with no time limits. Please see the event<br />

When: Saturday, September 21 open from 7:30, finishing at 9:00 and closing at 17:00.<br />

Where: <strong>Nagoya</strong> Dome (a 10 minute walk from the <strong>Nagoya</strong> Dome Maeyada Station on the<br />

Meijo line)<br />

Cost: Entry-only is 500 Yen (elementary school students and below are free). Participation fee is<br />

3,500 Yen per person and includes 2 entry-only tickets. The family run is 500 Yen per person.<br />

World Orchids Festa 2013 <br />

August is the month of Africa at this colourful event. Weeks one and two celebrate Madagascar,<br />

followed by Tanzania in week three and South Africa in week four. There will be lectures, exhibits,<br />

music and cultural presentations at this event. Come and listen to researchers talk about the<br />

disappearing orchid environments while learning about global environment protection.<br />

When: Until Tuesday, August 27 (10:00 - 20:00). Closed on: Wednesdays / If a public holiday, the<br />

next weekday.<br />

Where: Ran no Yakata (), <strong>Nagoya</strong> Naka-ku, Osu 4 chome<br />

Access: Approximately a 3 minute walk from Subway Yabacho Station exit 4 or about a 5 minute<br />

walk from Subway Kamimaezu station.<br />

KICA Essay Contest <br />

The Kyoto <strong>International</strong> Cultural Association’s (KICA) 36th Essay<br />

Contest is open for entries. This year’s theme is “Japan and the<br />

World I’ve seen”. We are pleased to present this opportunity for<br />

specialists and non-specialists alike to describe their personal<br />

experiences in Japan or to compare Japanese society, culture,<br />

economics and politics to those of their home countries. The<br />

contest is open to people whose mother language is not<br />

Japanese, and the essay must be presented in Japanese. Contestants<br />

must also be available to give an oral presentation on<br />

Sunday, 17 November in Kyoto if selected. All entries must be<br />

received by Monday, September 30. The grand prize is 70,000<br />

Yen with a 2nd place prize of 30,000 Yen (4 winners). See the<br />

<br />

The <strong>Nagoya</strong> Philharmonic Orchestra presents this “Salon Concert”<br />

featuring Kotaro SUGIYAMA (Viola). Entry is free.<br />

Organic Farmers Market <br />

Get fresh vegetables from Aichi, Mie, Gifu and Nagano at Oasis 21<br />

and support the local industry at this regularly held market at the<br />

Galaxy Platform () in front of the information desk called<br />

“”. It’s on every Saturday between 8:30 and 11:30.<br />

Don’t forget to bring your own shopping bags!<br />

Okazaki Summer Festival 65th Fireworks Display<br />

<br />

Last year approximately 460,000people attended this spectacular event! This<br />

is one of the most well-known fireworks in the region and is highly recommended.<br />

There’ll also be approximately 100 stalls on the day.<br />

When: Saturday, August 3, 18:50 - 21:00 (in the event of rain, will go on, in<br />

the event of stormy weather it will be postponed till the next day).<br />

Where: Otogawa and Yahagi riversides.<br />

Access: Meitetsu <strong>Nagoya</strong> Line: Higashi Okazaki or Okazaki Koenmae Station<br />

or Aichi Loop Line: Naka Okazaki Station (approx. a 10 minute walk from<br />

either). No parking available.<br />

Japan Rhine Summer Festival & Fireworks Display<br />

<br />

With Japan’s oldest castle illuminated in the background, approximately<br />

3000 fireworks are launched from river boats stationed in the middle of<br />

the Kiso River. Attracting approximately 200,000 people and with around<br />

200 market stalls in operation, you’re sure to have a fun night out.<br />

When: Saturday, August 10 (19:30 - 20:20)<br />

Where: On the banks of the Kiso River, downstream from the Inuyamabashi<br />

Bridge , Inuyama City.<br />

Access: A short walk from Meitetsu Inuyama Yu-en Station ;<br />

additional services will be in operation.<br />

Tokai Matsuri Fireworks Display <br />

Approximately 4000 fireworks with 95,000 people attending last year!<br />

When: Saturday, August 10 (19:20 - 20:30); August 11 in the event of<br />

heavy rain.<br />

Where: O-ike Koen , Tokai City<br />

Access: A 15 minute walk from (Meitetsu) Otagawa Station .<br />

Free temporary car park (15:00 - 22:00 / 2800 spaces) available at local JH<br />

& elementary schools (15:00 - 22:00).<br />

Noubi Big Fireworks Festival 2013<br />

From ancient times, the cities of Hashima and Ichinomiya have had<br />

economic connections. This festival celebrates the Kiso River and is recognized<br />

as “the mother who protects”. Join the festivities and watch the<br />

spectacular fireworks.<br />

When: Wednesday, August 14 (19:30 - 20:45). In the event of rain,<br />

postponed till Friday August 16.<br />

Where: Hashima City, Masaki cho, Oura (Upstream Kiso River Noubi<br />

Ohashi Bridge.)<br />

Access: From Hashima: a 15 minute walk and a shuttle bus ride from<br />

Meitetsu Hashima Shiyakusho Mae Station . From Ichinomiya:<br />

a free shuttle bus from Meitetsu Ichinomiya Station , West exit.<br />

Kariya Wansaka Festival <br />

As well as the large fireworks display (approx. 7,000) there are also stage<br />

events and festival stalls throughout the day.<br />

When: Saturday, August 17. Day festivities from 11:00 - 21:00.<br />

Fireworks scheduled for 19:30 - 20:45<br />

Where: Kariya City General Athletic Park , Kariya City.<br />

Access: A 20 minute walk across the river from Meitetsu Fujimatsu (<br />

) or Hitotsugi () Stations.<br />

48th Utsumi Fireworks Festival <br />

This fireworks festival features rarely seen “Suichuu Star Mine” fireworks<br />

that are exploded from the surface of the water and a 200m-wide<br />

“Niagara Falls” cascade that is popular with spectators. The festival takes<br />

place on Utsumi Beach- one of the best in the Tokai region.<br />

When: Saturday, August 17 (19:00 - 20:30)<br />

Access: A 15 minute walk from Meitetsu Utsumi Station or 7 minutes<br />

by car from Minamichita IC on the Chita Peninsula Expressway Toll<br />

Road ().<br />

Hirokoji Summer Festival <br />

With over 150 stalls lining the streets you’ll see singing,<br />

dancing, taiko drums and a float parade. In addition, 13<br />

outdoor stages will give way to lives and hand held<br />

fireworks (tezutsu hanabi). Held every year for 2 days and<br />

attracting around 500,000 people, don’t miss it!<br />

When: Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18<br />

Where: Hirokoji-dori<br />

Access: Subway, Sakae or Fushimi Station<br />

47th Tokoname Yaki Matsuri and Evening<br />

Fireworks <br />

Watch approximately 1,500 fireworks over the seaside<br />

location of Tokoname from 19:00.<br />

When: Saturday, August 24 (19:00 - 20:00). In the<br />

event of heavy rain, postponed to August 25.<br />

Where: Tokoname City, Shinkai cho, 6 chome<br />

Access: Approximately a 15 minute walk from Meitetsu<br />

Tokoname Station<br />

26th Toyokawa Tezutsu Festival<br />

<br />

The festival is famous for its 400 “tezutsu” large hand-held<br />

“Roman candle” style fireworks. There are also around<br />

1500 regular fireworks.<br />

When: Saturday, August 24 (17:30 - 21:40). August 25 in<br />

the event of rain<br />

Where: Toyokawa City Baseball Ground ,<br />

Toyokawa City<br />

Access: A 5 minute walk from (Meitetsu) Suwa-cho Station<br />

<br />

Sakae Fountain Beer Festa 2013 <br />

Held at the Plaza of Hope (the famous fountain area at Hisaya Odori), there’s plenty of food and drink to try out at this unique outdoor<br />

setting. There’s a variety of beers including craft beers, and the food menu includes well known <strong>Nagoya</strong> favourites like miso katsu<br />

skewers, spicy chicken wings, as well as some food and desserts from Hokkaido.<br />

When: On every day till Monday, September 23 (weekdays 17:00 - 21:30, weekends and holidays 12:00 - 21:30)<br />

Where: The Plaza of Hope - Hisaya Odori<br />
