August Highlights - Please note all prices, dates, times, and locations are subject to change - August Highlights - Please note all prices, dates, times, and locations are subject to change - Aichi International Women's Film Festival AIWFF 2013 Held annually since 1996, the 18th festival will take place this year, showing 36 films of various genres and backgrounds, many of them Aichi premieres. There will also be talks and events with special guests as well as a short film competition. Some of the films are in English while some of the foreign language films have English subtitles, so there is something for everyone. Where: Will Aichi, Higashi ward Access: A 10 minute walk from Shiyakusho Subway Station exit 2 Website: http://www.aiwff.com The 15 th Nippon Domannaka Festival From Friday evening, August 23 to Sunday, August 25 over 200 teams & around 23,000 performers from across Japan and from around the world will take over the streets of Nagoya as part of Japan’s largest dance festival. In 2010, the festival was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records for having the “Largest Naruko Dance” in the world with 9,481 participants which lasted 5 minutes and 33 seconds! Colourful and vibrant parades & performances will be held at over 19 locations in and around the City, with the main stage located in Hisaya Odori Park in Yabacho (Yaba-cho Subway Station, exit 6). Admission is free, but main stage spectator seating is extra. Full stage information and performance times can be found on the official website. Website: http://www.domatsuri.com/english/ Photo courtesy AIWFF Cormorant Fishing on the Kiso River Ukai is not conventional fishing with lines or nets, but fishing using specially-trained cormorant birds to catch, swallow, and regurgitate the fish. This unique fishing technique has been passed down through the generations and the first written record of ukai on the Kiso River dates back to 702. Since 1909 it has been one of the area’s premier tourist attractions. With the exception of typhoons and river swell there are daily ukai tours in Inuyama until the early autumn. Tours last just under 2 hours and visitors are taken out on special viewing boats to within close proximity of the fishing boats. There are ukai tours in other parts of Japan, but Inuyama is unique in that ukai fishing is done in the day time as well as at night. When: This year, both day and night ukai are held every day between June 1 to October 15, except August 10. Note that Kiso River may also close operation at its discretion due to weather and conditions. Reservations Reservations are required for all tours and can be made at the riverside ticket office - in person or over the phone (Tel: 0568-61-2727). Cancelation charges apply. Access: The Inuyama Bashi ukai reception area is a 5 minute walk from (Meitetsu) Inuyama Yuen Station, East Exit . • Tours will go ahead despite rain. In the case of heavy rain, river swell, or typhoon, tour cancellations will be announced at noon. • Prices for evening Ukai do not include a meal. • Meals are extra. You are allowed to bring your own food & drink for a fee of 300 Yen per person, however all garbage must be taken home with you. Photo: © Nippon Domannaka Festival Cultural Foundation The “Gaspard and Lisa” and “Penelope” Exhibition - Georg Hallensleben and Anne Gutman’s World Gaspard and Lisa and Penelope are the creations of husband and wife team Anne Gutman (writer) and Georg Hallensleben (illustrator) who live in France. They successfully make light of childhood mishaps and challenges with their light-hearted wit and humour. Lisa, the curious grown-up little girl and her friend Gaspard, are the main characters in their respective books, and together with their adventures were warmly received in Japan after the translation of their works in 2000. Penelope, the careless blue koala and her animations also came to Japan through NHK’s Educational Channel (now E-Television) and gained huge popularity with children. The exhibition presents approximately 100 pieces, including sketches and illustrations which let you more closely see the picture book making process. To truly appreciate these charming children picture book characters, one must really come and see these originals in person. When: Saturday, 6 July to Sunday, September 29 (10:00 - 19:00, last entry 18:30). Closed on Mondays (if a public holiday, closed the following day). The manga’s 42 volumes have sold over 230 million copies worldwide. The televised anime has an impressive average rating of over 20% for 11 years and gained legendary status among the population. The theatrical film released this year on the 30th of March, “DRAGON BALL Z BATTLE OF GODS”, made a huge hit for the first time in 17 years since the previous Dragon Ball film release in 1996. The exhibition is divided into 7 different zones, named after the 7 Dragonballs, from “1 Star Dragonball” through to “7 Star Dragonball” and will feature original comic pictures, colour illustrations, cels, a character wall and a special theatre. There will be approximately 300 items on exhibit as well as a “Battle of Gods” corner attraction to make for one huge opening! Applications for children born between April 2, 2007 and April 1, 2008 are now being accepted. Enrollment is based upon the residential area you live in and children cannot enroll in a school in an area where they are not a resident. After application, it will be necessary for your child to have a medical check-up on a specific date (after October 1) set up by the local elementary school. In January 2014 a notice of enrollment acceptance (shugaku tsuchi-sho ) will be mailed out from the local ward office. For more information please contact your local ward office’s citizen’s section (shimin-ka ). Basic Resident Registration Card For foreign residents, the “Basic Resident Registration Network System” will commence operation. Furthermore, foreign residents will be eligible to receive a “Basic Resident Registration Card”. Q1 What is the “Basic Resident Registration Network System” A1 The “Basic Resident Registration Network System” is a system that enables nationwide identity verification by putting the Basic Resident Registration on a network in order to increase convenience for residents. Q2 What is the “Basic Resident Registration Card” A2 The “Basic Resident Registration Card” is a highly secure IC card and the “Basic Resident Registration Card with Photo” can be used as an official identification. Q3 What procedures will become necessary at the commencement of operation of the “Basic Resident Registration Network System” A3 It is not necessary for foreign residents to perform any procedures at the commencement of operation of the “Basic Resident Registration Network System”.Please note that in accordance with the commencement of operation of the “Basic Resident Registration Network System”, a Resident Record Code* will be entered in the Resident Record of foreign residents and they will be notified of their Resident Record Code by their municipality of residence from July 8, 2013. For example, it will be possible to omit submission of a copy of the Resident Record at some administrative organs. • It will be possible for copies of the Resident Record to be issued at municipalities other than your municipality of residence. Presentation of the “Basic Resident Registration Card” or residence card, etc. will be required. • Special provisions for Move in Notification will be applied to those who have been issued the “Basic Resident Registration Card” which will allow them, by making Move out Notification by mail or other method, to appear only one time at the municipality of their new residence to complete the moving procedure. • Online administrative procedure applications that require an electronic certificate for verification of identification will be possible by storing an electronic certificate on the “Basic Resident Registration Card”. • It will be possible for those who have been issued the “Basic Resident Registration Card” to receive original services provided by municipalities such as issuance of certificates at convenience stores in some municipalities.
