Homecoming
by Cassie Fuerst • Public Relations Student Assistant
By The Tree T
to Perform P
at Homecoming Concert
Homecoming concert goers will
be challenged to dig to the “root” of
their faith as students, alumni, and
community members come listen to
the annual concert featuring By
The Tree. The band will perform
songs from their album Root which
was released in July. Founding
member Chuck Dennie believes this
project has become an expression of
who the band is and what they
stand for. “It feels great to be back
to a place where we can play the
music that truly moves us,” said
Dennie. “This album shows our passion
for rock-n-roll and has lyrics
that are close to our hearts.”
The concert will take place at 7
p.m. Monday, November 3, in the
new Parker Theatre in the Roland
Fine Arts Center.
Two-time Dove Award winning
By The Tree derived their name
from Romans 5 which discusses that
by the tree in the garden we all
came into sin, and by the tree of
the cross we can receive forgiveness.
The rock band strives to
relate these truths to their listeners,
encouraging them to dig deeper in
the faith through their pop/rock
energetic style.
The band is comprised of four
members. Chuck Dennie sings lead
vocals and plays guitar. He is originally
from Dallas, Texas, and is the
founding member of the group.
The group has its roots with Young
Life, an organization that focuses on
providing a comfortable setting in
which youth can be introduced to
spiritual truths.
Newest member Charlie
Goddard plays lead guitar and sings
background vocals. He hails from
Pensacola, Florida. Goddard feels
right at home with the crew. “Since
joining the band almost a year ago,
I’ve grown to be best friends with
the guys.” he said. Goddard’s musical
background began at the age of
four. In high school he discovered
his love for guitar. After graduation,
he played with Lindell Cooley
and then filled in with another
Christian band, Big Daddy Weave,
who introduced him to By The
Tree.
Ben Davis plays the bass guitar
and sings background vocals. He is
from York, Pennsylvannia. Davis’
love of music developed early, and
he has been playing some type of
instrument since the age of three.
While in high school he traveled
overseas and performed in Carnegie
Hall.
Aaron Blanton plays the drums
and sings back up. He grew up in
Nashville, Tennessee. Blanton
began playing the drums in the
fourth grade. At 17 he joined the
band Zilch, and a year later he
joined Sonicflood. He now makes
his home with By The Tree.
Tickets for the show are $10.
Honored at Homecoming
Basketball Game
On Saturday, November 8, HLG will honor
the 1951-1956 basketball teams for their outstanding
play in the National Junior College
Basketball Association. In a span of five years the
HLG Trojans placed second two years and third
three years. During this ceremony, four All-
American basketball players will be honored. We
will retire their jerseys between the men’s and
women’s homecoming basketball games.
Ray Schumann, #33, played for
HLG from 1951-1953. He was part of the 1952-1953
team that ranked first in offensive scoring in the
National Junior College Tournament and placed third
in that tournament. Originally from Kampsville,
Illinois, Schumann was named All-American in 1953
and was also National All-Tournament. He once held
the Illinois state scoring record, and he still holds the
record for most points scored in a Junior College
Tournament. In four games, he scored 160 points.
Schumann went on to play for Midwestern University
in Wichita Falls, Texas. After graduating he taught
junior high and high school and coached basketball.
He has been active in the Senior Olympics for 25
years, placing in six states including Kansas, Missouri
and Illinois.
Lowell “Cotton”
Fitzsimmons, #34, also played from
1951-1953. In the 1951-1952 season he averaged
25.5 points per game. Fitzsimmons later became a
well-known National Basketball Association coach in
the 1970s, and went on to coach the Phoenix Suns,
Atlanta Hawks, San Antonio Spurs, Buffalo Braves,
and Kansas City Kings before returning to Phoenix,
where he currently serves as Senior Executive Vice
President for the Suns. Fitzsimmons was named to
the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1981, the
National Junior College Hall of Fame in 1985 and the
Missouri Basketball Hall of Fame in 1988. He
received an honorary doctorate from HLG in 1988.
Dan Dotson, #42, was named All-
American in 1955. He played for HLG from 1953-
1955. Dotson was National All-Tournament and
named Most Valuable Player in the Nation. He
played for Houston University in Texas after graduating
from HLG. Dotson graduated from Houston
University with a bachelor’s in Business, and is currently
living in Dallas with is wife June. He owns Dan
Dotson & Associates, a distributing company.
Bill Bradley, #44, played from 1952-
1954, and was named All-American in 1954.
Originally from Bismarck, Missouri, Bradley was also
National All-Tournament, and he later played for
Northeast Louisiana State in Monroe, Louisiana. He
set the Gulf States Conference season scoring and
rebounding records and was inducted into the
Northeast Louisiana University Hall of Fame in 1981.
That same year, Bradley began coaching women’s basketball
at Mineral Area College. In 1994 he was
inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
Also taking part in the ceremony is former
HLG Coach Howard Dewell. Dewell coached
the basketball team from 1953-1955, during
which time the Trojans accumulated 155 wins
and only 42 losses. In 1996 Dewell was one of 11
seniors to receive the Governor’s Award for
Unique Achievement. He has received numerous
medals as a senior Olympian. In 1998 he
