president’s letter NAPAA Roadmap Calls for 100% Agent Membership As we go to the presses with this issue of Exclusivefocus, many changes affecting your futures are about to emerge. The recent purchase of Esurance and Answer Financial will enhance Allstate’s ability to become a more effective force in the rapidly growing direct channel. At the Leader’s Forum in Orlando, a new commission plan was announced. Some of you will see a 20% reduction in compensation, while others will see an increase. The rest of you will stay about the same. All in all, the careers of Allstate agents are under siege as management continues to focus on the sales department as the source of its woes. As agents, we know that this isn’t a valid assumption. There are myriad problems at Allstate that have nothing to do with the sales department. For example, how much insurance do you think you would sell if we actually had a competitive rate With all the cost-cutting Allstate has done over the past several years, mostly at agent expense, you would think we would be much more competitive than we are now. Could it be that the underwriting approach is flawed Are we padding too many claims Or could it be that the bloated management structure is siphoning off too much in salaries and bonuses Or is it all of the above With PIF declining in spite of the company’s aggressive push to put more Emerging Business on the books, agents should be congratulated on their ability to continually sell the agent value proposition over price. Without you, Tom Wilson would not be able to receive his enormous salary while he continues to fall short of his own RFG requirements. In the interview announcing the Esurance merger, Tom Wilson declared he was “trying to box in Geico and Progressive.” He promised to “compete aggressively with Geico and Progressive for those customers who are self-directed and want a branded experience.” Did he mean he would lower overall pricing, or did he mean he would introduce a special discount for the direct channel In any case, “boxing in” the competition President continued on page 8 Exclusivefocus National Association of Professional Allstate Agents, Inc.
