Tis night & the bright moon outglows,
Laird of the silvery scene,
Blossoming from droning shadows,
Drifting earthly‐wise serene,
Sank the rows of silken heroes
Yclad in Kendal Green ‐
While ordinary men storm’d the beaches;
Plumbers, miners, doctors, cops & teachers.
Lancasters race oer lethal beach
Of shell‐blast & mortar,
& yet to reach the bluff, to breach
Ways thro awful slaughter,
Men bray, their brethren bodies bobbing in bloody water.

As tho perchʹd on the Pharsalian plain,
Sense stirrʹd by the thrilling bagpipeʹs muster;
Veterans cast
Scarr’d minds back to Dunkerque,
France meets their feet at last… at last they go to work.
Dusty Friedrich dropt down his gun
Hoping quarter, hands held high,
Stept out by a dying Frenchman
& his spike‐entangl’d thigh,
Surrenderʹd to an Englishman,
They stood there eye‐to‐eye...
Tho good of soul Pat’s anger failʹd the test,
Raisʹd his rifle & piercʹd the panting chest.
Satisfied, the Goddess Karma
Departs the Norman shore
Where a Sumner slew a Stemmler,
ʺWhat did you do that forʺ
ʺOne of ʹem killʹd mi brother… had to even up the score.ʺ
