LSUHSC-S—Alexandria
Family Practice Residency
Robin Dale, MD, PGY-II
What an exciting time for us here in
Alexandria! We are in the midst of recruiting
season once again. Even more
exciting are the newest members of our
faculty, Dr. Tuncay Ertan and Dr. Brian
Jobe.
Dr. Ertan, pulmonologist, joined our
staff in October. He originally hails from
Turkey where he completed medical
school. He completed his residency and
fellowship in pulmonology at Tulane. He
was Assistant Chief of Medicine and Director
of Medical Education for the VA
Hospital and Huey P. Long Medical Center
from 1969-1971. He had a thriving
private practice at Rapides Regional
Medical Center from 1971-1996, where
he began the respiratory care unit. In
1996, he semi-retired to Colorado where
he started another cardiopulmonary unit at
Routt Hospital in Steamboat Springs. To
our good fortune, he could not stay away
from his love of medicine and teaching.
As such, he agreed to join our faculty and
has already boosted our knowledge of
inpatient medicine logarithmically. The
residents are enjoying rounds treme n-
dously and learning new skills each day.
Dr. Ertan is an avid tennis and golf
player. He is also a former Olympian as
he played table tennis in the 1952 Olympic
Games as the national champion for
Turkey.
Dr. Jobe is a board certified Family
Practitioner. He finished his undergraduate
degree at LSU in Baton Rouge with a
degree in biochemistry in 1989. His completed
his M.D. at LSU-Shreveport in
1994 and he finished his family practice
residency at UMC in Lafayette in 1997.
He had a private practice in Eunice for 2
years and then worked in several Emergency
Rooms until 2001. He also has had
experience in Occupational Medicine during
the last year before joining our staff.
His great variety and depth of experience
will be greatly utilized. He has a beautiful
wife and 3 handsome boys ages 5 through
8. His spare time is spent reading and
with his family. We are delighted to have
these 2 new staff.
We are very pleased to have third
year medical students from Tulane doing
clerkships with us. We hope to have many
more. Many fourth year medical students
have scheduled rotations with us to experience
our program firsthand as we are
able to accommodate most requests for
clerkships. The students continue to be
especially impressed with the volume of
procedures that we perform. Both the staff
and residents are eager to teach and love
to do so. Expanding the knowledge base
here is easy given our vast array of pathology.
Over the last few weeks, our inpatient
team has cared for a patient with
an atrial myxoma and another with
Miller-Fisher syndrome.
Our LSUFP flag football team thus
far has a winning season. Our bowling
team is in sixth place and out of running
for the title, but they are having fun no
matter what. Our last journal club, held at
the home of Drs. Chris and Amy Griffin,
was a fantastic discussion of losartan versus
atenolol therapy in isolated systolic
hypertension in the elderly. After our serious
discussion, a ping-pong tournament
ensued with all involved having a great
time. I am very happy to say that I beat
Dr. Ertan but he has revenge planned.
Dr. Laura Fairbanks and Dr. Amy
Griffin are heading our Tar Wars program
with tremendous success. Each resident
has given a presentation to local fifth
grade classes in an effort to prevent tobacco
use. Over 20 schools throughout
the central Louisiana area have heard this
message from our program this year. This
anti-tobacco message is conveyed clearly
and concisely in a way that fifth graders
can understand. We look forward to continuing
the Tar Wars in years to come.
BATON ROUGE GENERAL
FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY
Joshua Summers, PGY III
The streak continues. Congratulations
to our most recent graduates on their
success with the Family Practice Board
Examination. Since the birth of this program,
we have maintained a 100% pass
rate for first time takers on the boards. We
thank our faculty and community preceptors
on their hard work in preparing us for
future success.
We are prepared to enter another successful
recruiting season. Our recruiting
committee is hard at work reviewing
many exceptional applicants. We will begin
our interview process in November,
and conclude at the end of January with
an unprecedented “second look,” where
we will highlight our ability to host the
ALSO course.
We also use this time to recruit LSU
undergraduates and expose them to the
joys of family medicine. Twenty, highly
motivated, pre-med students spend one
evening each month with us to gain an
understanding about family practice. The
program’s highlight is “A Day in the Life
of a Physician,” where students will follow
resident physicians as they see patients
in the office. We hope to someday
be recruiting these bright students to our
program to provide care for the citizens of
Baton Rouge.
As fall comes upon us, we see an
increase in collegiate and intramural athletics
here in town. We have been afforded
a tremendous opportunity in the
sports medicine domain. Our program
Director, Derek Anderson, was recently
named one of the new LSU team physicians.
As residents, we now can see LSU
athletes at an evening clinic on campus.
This has significantly improved our sports
medicine exposure when combined with
the work we do for Southern University,
many local high schools, the Senior
Olympics, and the Louisiana State Troopers
Association.
The Family Medicine Residency
does as much as we can, to aid the community
we serve. Each month we provide
meals for the women and children of Baton
Rouge, who have fallen on hard times.
With the help of our residency coordinator,
Connie Rome, our office manager,
Loretta Pouciau, and my wife, KC, we
prepare and serve meals at the St. Vi n-
cent’s DePaul Women and Children’s
Shelter. It has been an excellent opportunity
to see people turn their lives around.
We have seen many women gain new
employment and move into their own
housing. The greatest reward is to see
those you have helped turn around and
help others get back on their feet.
We have also made great strides to
rebuild the community around us. With
the help of the Mid City Redevelopment
Alliance, we have helped to renovate
houses and paint schools, in order to improve
the lives of our patients. We have
gained a reputation in the community as
not only quality physicians, but also people
who truly care for others.
It is easy to see why a community
based training program is superior to a
university setting. It has been an excellent
opportunity to see the private patients of
our community preceptors in their offices.
Patients are very receptive to having
young doctors take an interest in their
care.
We are also more prepared for life
after residency training, as our program
runs like a group practice. The Family
Health Center is a freestanding facility
with lab and x-ray capabilities. Along
with excellent patient care, the residency
provides extensive training in practice
