management and coding. This has certainly
decreased my anxiety, as I prepare for private
practice in the summer.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time
training in Baton Rouge. Though initially
drawn to return to my Florida roots, the
relationships forged and great Louisiana
cooking, will likely keep me in Baton
Rouge. I suppose I’ll need to form a new
Gatorclub, with whom I can spend my Saturdays
next fall.
Rick Jeansonne, PGY2
Happy Holidays from the LSU Family
Practice Residency at Lake Charles Memorial
Hospital. It has been an exciting year
for everyone. The new interns are quickly
coming out of their shell and have truly
been remarkable and aggressive in taking
care of patients and getting plenty of procedures
under their belts. Our third year residents
have their futures determined. Chris
Achee, MD and James McNally, MD will
be opening a joint practice in Jennings, LA.
Dan Coffee, MD will be moving back to
his home state of New York and doing ER
work. Stacey Mayeaux, MD has signed
with Doctors Hospital of Opelousas to join
fellow alum Dr. Laura Braham. And finally,
Carolyn Hutchinson, MD has tentative
plans to move back to her hometown
in Monroe, LA.
The Second year class is excited about
all the moonlighting opportunities here in
SW Louisiana and we have been working
hard to get all of our numbers and papers in
order to venture out into this new part of
our lives.
Again, we are also proud parents; Michael
Jeansonne, Elizabeth Achee, Evan
(Daughter of alum Darren Duet), and Alyson
Baquet round out the new additions to
our family, all of which were born in the
past 2 months. Expecting a baby at the
New Year is Michelle McNally, wife of
“Chief” James McNally.
November 8-9 marked the Annual Fall
Festival Weekend in which we entertained
over 17 medical students and spouses. Friday
night was the Gumbo and Bonfire on
the Calcasieu River, with live music by
some of the residents. I also wish to add
that no wildlife were harmed in the musical
fiasco, as Tuan Pham, MD sang “Living on
a Prayer” by Bon Jovi (his trademark). Saturday
night was the tailgate party at my
house followed by a walk to the McNeese-
SW Texas Football game, with tickets
complimentary of our Sports Medicine faculty,
Dr. Bryan Barootes. Numerous faculty
were present from the departments of
Cardiology, OB-GYN, Medicine, and Surgery
to stir the excitement of our program
in the hearts of interested students. It looks
like it’ll be another great year of interviewing
and the applicants get better and more
numerous each year. We should have six
great new residents again next year!
All is quiet on the western front (of
Louisiana), and we wish everyone a Merry
Christmas and a Blessed New Year.
Residency Program
Kim J. Hunter, Coordinator
Can you believe it is already November,
our PGY-1's are nearing the 6 month
mark. They are doing a great job, adapting
well to seeing patients and learning a lot
during their rotations. ERAS is up and running,
fast and furious. We have begun interviewing
and have scheduled several future
interviews. This is a very exciting
time, so far thirteen of our applicants are
LSU students. Debbie Henry, Academic
Coordinator did a great job hosting and
arranging our resident fair in October. It
was a great success. We had 20 Family
Medicine programs to participate from
Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana.
Student participation was outstanding.
We would like to welcome to our staff,
full time faculty member, Patrick B. Wood,
MD Assistant Professor of Family Medicine,
Co-Director, Primary Care Pain Management
Clinic Adjunct Assistant Professor,
in the Department of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Wood completed his residency in Family
Medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center
in Shreveport following graduation
from medical school from the same institution.
Following his residency, he undertook
a yearlong fellowship in Psychopharmacology
Research in the Department of Psychiatry.
His primary research focus is the
Fibromyalgia Syndrome. Dr. Wood serves
as coordinator for the Behavior Medicine
curriculum for the Family Medicine residency
program. We would also like to
welcome home Randy Richter, MD. Dr.
Richter has been in Germany since July
2002 serving our country as a member of
the Army Medical Unit. We look forwarding
to him returning to work November 18,
2002. Several of our faculty members have
submitted packages for promotions: J. Bart
Pope for Professor and Rush-Kolodzey,
Minao Baudoin and Jeffrey German for
Associate Professor. Congratulations to
each of them.
Congratulations goes out to Dr. Patrick
Deere, 2nd year and bride-elect Kelly, announced
their engagement and will tie the
knot December 7, 2002. Our resident, faculty
and medical students were actively
involved again in the “Tar Wars” effort.
Along with the support of AHEC they presented
this program to over 500 fourth and
fifth graders in October.
Hurricanes, hurricanes, hurricanes . . .
and the occasional tornado! Those should
become our bywords, some of us here in
Lafayette feel. While we experienced the
arrival of tropical storm Isidore relatively
unscathed, the arrival of Lili exactly a
week later was another matter. Thank
goodness she had calmed down from the
anticipated level IV to a level II before
making landfall. Still, her arrival was
worse than many/most expected. While the
serious damage was generally confined to
the “other” living things we share our globe
with (namely trees) the toll on them was
great. At this writing 6 weeks later, the
cleanup of debris in local neighborhoods
seems to only now be winding down. It
almost seems unusual to no longer see that
material piled car-high almost continuously
along the sides of many residential streets.
Still, we were lucky. No one was
killed. The inconvenience of the entire city
being without electricity from hours to a
week or so and the extra work of cleaning
up seem insignificant compared to what
could have been. Buildings can be repaired,
and other trees can be planted.
During the storm, Family Practice
Center personnel were required to report
for duty. Children and/or other family
members could be brought along; although
no one actually brought their children. Personnel
stayed for 12 or more hours until the
worst had passed. Two of our residents,
Tom Price and Vanessa Thomas were on
hand at the Heymann Center to provide
care to medically fragile homebound patients
who had been brought to that facility.
Reports are they were quite busy.
It was anything but an ill wind that
enabled us to bring Alan Broussard, MD
onto the full- time faculty on 1 September
’02. Alan, a former graduate of this program,
has been practicing in this area for a
number of years. He was voted “Preceptor
of the Year” by the residents and given the
award for it at last year’s graduation ceremony.
We are excited about his being here.
Welcome, Alan!
Results were relatively recently obtained
from the ACGME advising us of the
continuation of our full accreditation. We
are proud of that and appreciate the hard
work of all in the program, hospital and
